  When people visit New York, they will see the Statue of Liberty, which was designed by a Frenchman, Auguste Bartholdi(1834-1904).Bartholdi was famous for his art and statues.One evening, at a dinner party, he talked with his friends about how France had helped the United States win its freedom from England almost 100 years earlier.His friends decided Bartholdi should design a large statue of the Roman goddess, Libertas, or Liberty, as a gift to America.In 1884, France gave the statue to the United States.It has been one of America's famous symbols.
