Joan worked in a hospital as a nurse. One evening there was a big dance party at the hospital. Most of the doctors and nurses would be there, but of course somebody had to be left to look after the sick children, and Joan was not one of the lucky ones. She liked dancing very much, so when she had to start work that evening while her friends were getting ready to go to the dance, she felt very sorry for herself.
She went to each sick child one after another and said good-night, until she came to one little boy, Dicky. He was eleven years old, but he was already able to talk like an adult. Poor Dicky had a very serious illness, and now he was hardly able to move any part of his baby except his hands. Joan knew he would never get any better, but he was always happy and always thinking about other people instead of about himself.
Dicky knew that Joan loved dancing, so now when she came to say good-night to him, he greeted her with the words, “I'm very sorry that you have to miss the dance because of us. But we are going to have a party for you. If you look in my drawer(抽屜), you'll find a piece of cake. I saved it from my supper today, so it's quite fresh. And there is also a dollar there. You can buy something to drink with that. And I'd get up and dance with you myself if I am able to.” he added. Suddenly the hospital dance seemed very far away and not at all important to Joan.

When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was very short, what’s more, something was wrong with his foot. When we walked together, people would laugh at us. So he always said, “You go by yourself. I will try to catch up with you.”
It’s far from my home to his factory, and he went there on foot. No matter how bad the weather was, he almost never missed a day, and would make it to the office even if others could not. 83When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. However, he never talked about himself. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”, and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.
Once, a fight broke out at a beach party, nobody would stop it. Though my father couldn’t stand up, he began to shout, “I’ll fight anyone who will sit down with me!” Nobody did, and the fight was over. I was really proud of him.
When I played ball (poorly), he “played” too. When I joined the Navy, he “joined” too. Once, I visited his office. Introducing me, he was really saying, “This is my son, but it is also me, and I could have done this, too, if things had been different.” Those words were never said aloud.
84He has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I think of him when I complain about something terrible, when I don’t have a “good heart”. Only then could I remember his words, “You go by yourself. I will try to catch up with you.”
