I was walking down the road one day when my phone rang.       voice on the other end spoke to me, “Dad, please come back soon. I miss you so much!” I thought that it was a wrong number. Finally I answered the phone and heard a weak voice, “Dad, please come back. I miss you so much! Dad, I’m in so much         ! Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. But, dad, please       me again, OK?” It was        to refuse the innocent(天真的, 無邪的) ask. When she couldn’t          the painful chemotherapy(化療), she would cry for her dad because her dad          encouraged(鼓勵) her. I really don’t know what to do, so I gave her a random(隨意的) phone number…”

Would you like to experience what going to school was like in the late 1800s? to start with, imagine everyone in school only one classroom.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most American students went to a one-room schoolhouse. A single teacher would typically(典型地) have students in the first through eighth grades, and she taught them all. The number of students varied from six to 40 or more. The youngest children sat in the front, while the oldest students sat in the back. The teacher usually taught reading, writing, arithmetic, history, and geography. Students memorized(記憶) and retold their lessons.
The classroom of a one-room schoolhouse probably looked much like your own. The teacher’s desk stood on a raised platform(講臺) at the front of the room, however, and there was a wood-burning stove since there was no other way of heating. The bathroom was outside in an outhouse.
In Honeoye Falls, New York, there is a one-room schoolhouse where kids today can experience what it was like to the students in the late 19th century. For a week during the summer, they wear 19th century clothes and learn the way children learned more than a hundred years ago.

Mark Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media always praise (表揚) him. But when you actually take the time to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever imagine.
The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure.
More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses scenes of Tom there to mock religion and its old traditions.
Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical (批判的) points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US – he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly.
He also believed strongly in women’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
