Liberal (自由) education is designed not only to teach and learn knowledge, but also to develop a person’s character. Its aim is to   1  each student to think for himself and make wise decisions. Now liberal education has a great    2 on the world.
Much work has been done to  3  a better way of teaching. In a liberal class, students are  4 to have their own thoughts and own ideas when they have  5  which are often held in the form of group discussion. They are properly guided to   6  the knowledge learned. Punishment no longer exists (存在).  7 and students are just like friends.
The idea is of course a perfect one if it can really be carried out. However, it  8 exists in the imagination and will never be realized. We must admit (承認) that  9  should at least be guided properly. Just close your eyes and think how many students will   10  the duties of a student if they are not pushed.   11 is the use of advice only if it is not supported by a reasonable   12  of  control and punishment?
It is   13  for us to judge the success and failure of the kind of education now, but   14  the bad behavior of children, which is really the   15  of liberal education, we can see that something must be done to help these children.

Should we be afraid of sharks? Maybe not. New research into the reasons for shark attacks (攻擊) suggests that sharks don’t like the way humans taste! In fact, most people who are attacked by the shark are still alive after receiving only one bite (咬). Why is this?
There are many opinions to explain why sharks sometimes attack people. One opinion is that sharks are just curious (好奇的). We know that sharks are the strongest animals in their environment, so they are not afraid of anything. Naturally, that means they are curious when they meet something unusual. Because they don’t have hands or feet., the only way they can find out an object is to bite it! It is thought that sharks sometimes bite humans for this reason, and then swim away.
Scientists also say that sharks would not waste energy trying to eat a human, as we have a lot of bones (骨頭). It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don’t have hands, and they can’t pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that’s why they only bite us once. Unluckily, one bite from a large shark is serious enough to hurt people greatly!
Another opinion is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks may sometimes mistake humans for a seal. An example of this is when a shark attack attacks a surfer. A surfer lying on a surfboard looks like a seal when seen from below. Sharks like seals because they have thick fat.
Whatever the reason for shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year.
小題1:What happens to people attacked by sharks?
A.Most of them because blind.B.Most of them because of deaf.
C.Most of them died.D.Most of them are still alive.

A.By biting.B.By smelling.
C.By touching.D.By killing.

A.Sharks pull meat off bones when they eat.
B.Sharks might mistake humans for seals.
C.Sharks like to attack surfers because of their thick fat.
D.One bite from a shark is nothing serious.
小題4:What would the author write the passage mainly for?
A.To tell surfers to stay away from sharks.
B.To ask people to stop killing sharks.
C.To let us know the reasons for shark attacks on people.
D.To show that humans are much stronger than sharks.

Zhang Zhaojie, a 13-year-old schoolboy in Xiamen enjoyed many snacks during Spring Festival. “I love chocolate and chips very much. They are high in sugar and fat. But I can’t help eating them,” Zhang said.
Recently, an online list of favorite snacks in China became popular. It said that peanuts, walnuts and chocolate are good for our health, and jelly, potato chips and lollipops(棒棒糖) are “bad”. Almost every kid on the planet loves snacks, and they seldom care how healthy they are. Although some snacks like chocolate and candy are found everywhere, others are unique(獨特的) to a country or a culture.
In Japan, Matcha(抹茶) is a kind of green tea powder. It’s made from tea leaves and can be used with ice cream or cakes. In fact, Matcha originated in China but took off in Japan. Biscuits or cookies covered with chocolate are also a Japanese favorite.
Potato chips and French fries are very popular in the US. They are cheap but tasty. But they are high in calories and eating too much may make you fat. Popcorn(爆米花) is another typical snack. People eat it when they are watching sports games or visiting the amusement park. Most cinemas also sell Popcorn.
In the UK, many people sit down for snacks at around 4 p.m. every day. They call it “afternoon tea”. Traditional afternoon tea is biscuits and tea. People also have scones(烤餅) with jam and cream, which is probably the most classic English snack.

After spending years searching for a planet with life, scientists may have found one. In September 2010, a team of US scientists discovered a planet called Gliese 581g. It has a surface temperature neither too hot nor too cold for liquid(液態(tài))water. Scientists think there is a chance that the planet could have life.
The planet Gliese 581g goes around a star called Gliese 581, which is about 20 light-years from Earth. That is about 194 trillion(萬億)kilometres -500 million times farther away from us than the moon.
A spacecraft traveling at a one-tenth of the speed of light would reach Gliese 581g within about 220 years. A human can’t live that long, but robotic explorers could make the job easier. However, our fastest spacec raft don’t come anywhere near that one-tenth light-speed mark.
At present, scientists don’t know what the surface might be like on Gliese 581g. What they know is that the planet is at the right distance from its star to have liquid water. It’s also at the right distance to have an atmosphere that could protect the water if it is on the surface.
Although spacecraft won’t be getting there anytime soon, one way to look for life on Gliese 581g is to turn our radio telescopes(望遠鏡)towards the planet and search for radiation(放射). By studying the radiation, scientists would find out about the chemicals(化學物質(zhì))around the planet and discover if Gliese 581g has an atmosphere. If it has one, studying the atmosphere would give us a good idea whether the planet has life or not. But it’ll probably be many years before we can do this properly.
People have been arguing about whether there is alien life on Gliese 581g. Any discussion about alien life is just guessing at this point, according to its discoverers.
小題1:What did scientists find in September 2010?

C.A planet without life.D.A planet near the earth.
小題2:According to the article, Gliese 581g ________.

A person has been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give him a transfusion (輸血) because he has lost much blood in the accident. However, special care must be taken in selecting new blood for him. If the blood is too different from his own, the transfusion can kill him.
There are four basic blood groups: A, B, AB and O. A single test can tell us a person’s blood group. Everybody is born with one of these four blood groups. People’s blood group, like hair colour, is inherited (繼承) from parents.
Because the substances contained in each group are different, transfusion must be given carefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can be given to any other group, so it is often called the universal donor. On the contrary, AB is sometimes called the universal recipient (接受者). However, before being given the transfusion, patients usually receive only salt or plasma (血漿) until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible. In this way, it is possible to avoid any bad results of the transfusion.
There is a relationship between our blood groups and our nationalities. Among the Europeans, about 42 percent are blood group A while 45 percent are blood group O. The rarest is blood group AB. However, some American Indian groups are nearly 100 percent blood group O.
小題1:Which of the following shows the correct relationship in blood transfusion? (→ =" giving" blood to)

小題2:Usually, before being given a transfusion, ________.
A.a(chǎn) person needs to receive salt or plasma first
B.a(chǎn) person needs to have a good rest
C.a(chǎn) person needs to have a lot of food and water
D.a(chǎn) person needs to find the person with the same blood group as him
小題3:The third most common blood type among the Europeans is _______.
A.AB.BC.ABD.O
小題4:Which is NOT right according to the passage?
A. A person’s blood group depends on his parents.
B. There is only one kind of blood group in a person’s body.
C. About 13 percent of the Europeans have blood group AB.
D. Most of American Indians can be universal blood donors.

At last, the mid-term exams are over. You’ve done the hard work, but you can’t relax. You have to prepare for the next exams. Do you hate exams? If you do, you are not alone. Students in other countries hate them as well.
Luckily for them, British students have fewer exams than Chinese students. And they only have them once a year. Every summer they take a test in each subject. Each test lasts about an hour. These exams don’t count for much, even if a student does really badly they still progress to the next grade. When the results come out, they are then placed in an end-of-year report. The report is sent to the child’s parents. It describes how the student studied at school.
This report is private, so only the teacher, the student and his or her parents see it. This means that the students don’t know how other students scored(得分) in the test. Some students choose to tell each other, but others keep it secret.
Parents’ meetings are held twice a year, at the end of winter term and then at the end of the summer term. Children go along with their parents to meet their teachers privately and discuss their performance at school.
小題1:For British students, the school life is         than that of Chinese students.
A.more relaxingB.much tenserC.more boringD.much harder
小題2:The underlined phrase “don’t count for much” means
A.難以計數(shù)B.不太重要C.期望不多D.難度不大
小題3:Which of the following is NOT true for British students?
A.They have exams once a year.
B.They don’t know their classmates’ scores.
C.Parents’ meetings are held at the end of the terms.
D.They like to tell each other their scores
