【題目】Answer the questions.
In 1935, when Emma was five years old, her mother died. Although her brothers and sisters were loving and caring, they were no replacement for a mother’s love. Emma, who grew up to be my mother, told me that her family was too poor to afford to buy her a little doll at that time.
After her mother’s death, Emma was determined to look after others. She felt that she could make up for her sad childhood through her dedication(奉獻(xiàn))to her own family. But I knew there was still something missing.
A few days before Christmas in 1989, one customer came to our company with her beautiful handmade dolls. I decided to get one for my five-year-old daughter, Lucy. Then I had an idea, I asked the customer to make me a doll for my mother, Emma—a special one with grey hair and glasses—a grandmother doll.
A friend of mine agreed to play Santa(圣誕老人)to deliver the presents to our home on Christmas morning! I began to get ready for what would turn out to be one special day of my mother’s life.
Santa arrived on Christmas Day at the planned time. Lucy was so happy to get the present from Santa. When Santa turned to leave, he looked once more into his huge bag and brought out one more present. Then he asked where Emma was. To my mother’s big surprise, she heard her name! He handed her the present and also a message card:
For Emma,
Before my trip this year, I was cleaning my room and found this package. It was supposed to be delivered on December 25, 1935. Many apologies for delivering the present late.
Love,
Santa
She couldn’t speak but only held the doll she had waited fifty-four years to receive as tears of joy ran down her cheeks(臉頰). That doll, given by“Santa”,made my mother the happiest“child”that Christmas.

【題目】Answer the questions(根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答下列問(wèn)題)
Australia is almost as large as China(China is about 9,600,000 km2 while Australia is 7,682,300 km2),but Australia has a much smaller population(just over 19. 5 million). Most people live in cities along the coast of Australia, and huge areas of the rest of Australia are uninhabited(無(wú)人居住的). In some areas, families live a long way away from one another and from towns and cities. Australians call this part of the country "the Out back(內(nèi)陸)"or "the Bush". Most people who live in the outback work on huge sheep or cattle stations(農(nóng)場(chǎng)).Some of these properties are as large as 3,000~5,000 km2 and their nearest neighbours may be 100 km or more away.
Many children in the outback are too far from town to travel to school. Instead, they attend one of the sixteen Schools of the Air. The schools are located in towns and teachers use high frequency radio to talk to their classes. They also post work to the students who post it back for their teacher to mark. Students also use the Internet, fax and phone to communicate with their teacher and with other students. Sometimes students are sent a video or audiotape to help them with their lessons.
Tim Benton's brother George is the manager of a large cattle station in the Northern Territory. When they were in primary school, George's children, Rebecca and Oliver, attended the Alice Spring School of the Air. Their mother and father took it in turns to help them with their lessons. After they finished primary school, Rebecca and Oliver went to a high school in Alice Springs. They lived with their Aunt Mary during the school term and returned home during the school holidays. At first, high school was difficult because they weren't used to being in a class with other students. In some subjects, they did not know as much as the children from the town. However, they soon caught up because they had very good study skills, thanks to the School of the Air.

Some people are standing at a group of low hills in West Texas. Suddenly, they observe glowing reddish - orange lights. Are they the headlights of cars on the highway? Are they the lights of campfires? The people shout and point because the lights are moving! But they aren’t moving the way cars move. They shoot up in the air. They fall back to the earth. And then ... they simply disappear!
Every night, people go to observe the famous Marfa lights. The lights are named for the town of Marfa, Texas, where these lights can be seen in the distant hills east of the town. Over the years there have been many beliefs about these strange lights. One theory is that the lights are the headlights of cars driving down the road.
But that could not be true. Settlers in the 1880s wrote about the lights long before there were cars with headlights. At that time, pioneers thought the Marfa lights were the campfires of Apaches2 in the hills. When the pioneers would ride into the hills, they could find no evidence3 of campsites of fires. Later, the settlers learned that the Apaches, too, could see the lights. They thought the lights were stars that had come down the earth.
Some people say that the lights are moonlight shining on metal in the hills. Others say they are made by gases from swamps4. Some scientists have tried to prove that lights from planets or starts reflect5 in a strange way on the hills. That doesn’t help us understand why the lights “dance”. They move up and down, slow down and speed up. These dancing “stars”, the Marfa lights, stay a mystery.
