If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others?

Don't listen to people who say that young people today often think only of themselves. It's not true at all. More and more young people in the USA volunteer (自愿) to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don't do it for money. Here are some of their stories.

Alice Hamilton,17 Fm going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths in the mountains. It's going to be terrific―I'll spend the whole summer living in a tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice sport. And I'll be able to do something good at the same time!Jason Moore,18 This summer,Fm going to volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, lowcost (低成本的) houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They'll teach me what to do,so I'll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses. Trish Anderson,16

I'm going to teach kids who have trouble in reading. I'll work for a program called Reading for Life. Every day,I'm going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher, and I love children and reading,so this is going to be a great experience for me.

Sky and Canfield are two seaside towns, not far from each other. Both towns have many hotels, and in the summer the hotels are full of holidaymakers and other people.

Last August there was a fire at the Star Hotel in Sky. The next day, this news was on page two of the town's newspaper―The Sky Post: Fire at Star.

Late last night firemen (消防隊(duì)員) hurried to the Star Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette (香煙) started the fire. We say again to all our visitors, "Please don't smoke cigarettes in bed."This was Sky's first hotel fire for five years.

The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one: Another Sky Hotel Catches Fire.

Last night Sky firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and other things at the Star Hotel. An angry holidaymaker said, "An electric lamp (電燈) probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light on,I heard a funny noise from the lamp."We are glad to tell our readers that this kind of accident does not happen in Canfield.

What are the facts, then? It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident. There was a fire at the Star Hotel last August, that is one fact. Do we know anything else? Yes―we know that firemen went to the hotel. Now what do you think of the rest of the "news"?

I spoke at a middle school in 1995. When it was over, the headmaster asked me if I would visit a special student. An illness had kept him at home. He wanted to meet me,thinking I knew about overcoming (克服) difficulties and going for dreams. I agreed.

During the drive to his home,I knew he was called Matthew,a real fighter. He had a muscle (肌肉) disease. I spent an afternoon talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, "Why me?" He didn't mention how he was made fun of being different;he just talked about his hope for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me.

When we finished talking,I pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming difficulties than I. He looked at it for a moment and handed it back, saying, "Rick, you are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday, when I get to the Olympics and win my gold medal,I will show it to you."

Last summer I heard from Matthew's parents. They wanted me to read a letter he had written to me a few days before his death.

Dear Rick,

I've kept all the letters you wrote to me. I told you someday I was going to the Olympics to win a gold medal. I know now I will never get to do that. But I know I am a champion. When I get to heaven,God will give me my gold medal, and when you get there,I will show it to you.

Thanks for loving me.

Two years ago,I bought my girlfriend Nicole a pair of fur earmuffs (耳套) .She loved the gift and she wore them every day.
