【題目】Future astronauts could travel with emotional support robots

To help astronauts of the future survive(幸免于) the mental(精神的) challenges that come with staying in space for quite a long time, space travelers’ tasks could soon be accompanied(陪伴) by AI-powered, empathetic(有同理心的,同感的) robotic helpers.

Not only does space travel present astronauts with lots of physical stresses, spending months or years in such a physically demanding(要求高的) place with limited space and the same people can also raise many mental tests as well. According to MIT Technology Review, scientists are working to alleviate astronauts from some of the latter challenges by creating “an AI assistant that’s able to feel human emotion and respond(做出反應) with empathy.”

While such a technology would prove itself useful by being able to predict the needs of the crew members in space and “intervene(干預) if their mental health is in danger,” it has the potential to be life-saving when humans choose to explore beyond Earth’s gravitational field(引力場) and towards deep space.

Though astronauts currently on the International Space Station have an intelligent robot to interact with called CIMON, it is short of proper emotional intelligence according to NASA CTO Tom Soderstrom. As a result, a team at the organization’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is working on a more complex(復雜的) emotional support companion that can control a spacecraft’s functioning in addition to tracking the crew members’ behaviours.

Right now in the lab, an AI-equipped robot called Henry the Helper can be found walking around the grounds assisting visitors who appear confused or lost based on their facial expression. Two more emotionally intelligent robots are expected to be introduced later this year, one of which is said to be able to take part in conversations more complex than giving navigation(導航) assistance.

The team’s final goal is to make a companion named Fiona the Future a reality, an emotionally intelligent cross-platform system. Fiona, if all goes according to the JPL’s plans, will help keep astronauts of the future stay mentally fit as they start their journeys to deep space.

1What does the underlined word alleviate in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A.面臨B.應對C.緩解D.刺激

2According to the passage, which is the biggest challenge astronauts meet in space?

A.Mental health.B.Physical health.C.Food safety.D.Environment.

3Which of the following is NOT true about the future AI helpers?

A.They will be able to know human emotion by feeling.

B.They will be able to control the crew members’ behaviours.

C.They will be able to guess what the crew members want.

D.They will be able to join in the conversations with the crew members.

根據(jù)下文“…by creating an AI assistant that’s able to feel human emotion and respond(做出反應) with empathy”以及下文對機器人助手的介紹可知,科學家們創(chuàng)造的人工智能助手就是為了減輕宇航員面臨的心理挑戰(zhàn),所以alleviate的意思是減輕、緩解,故選C。

2

判斷推理題。根據(jù)第一句話中“To help astronauts of the future survive(幸免于) the mental(精神的) challenges that come with staying in space for quite a long time…”和第二段中“…spending months or years…can also raise many mental tests as well.”

根據(jù)第二段最后“…an AI assistant that’s able to feel human emotion and respond(做出反應) with empathy”可知未來的人工智能助手能夠感知人類的情感,所以選項A說法正確;根據(jù)第四段最后“…a more complex(復雜的) emotional support companion that can control a spacecraft’s functioning in addition to tracking the crew members’ behaviours.”可知更復雜的情感支持助手能追蹤機組成員的行為,而非控制宇航員的行為,所以選項B說法錯誤;根據(jù)第五段第一句“Right now in the lab, an AI-equipped robot called Henry the Helper can be found walking around the grounds assisting visitors who appear confused or lost based on their facial expression.”可知人工智能機器人能夠幫助那些看上去困惑或迷路的參觀者,所以他們能夠猜出宇航員想要什么,選項C說法正確;根據(jù)第五段最后一句“Two more emotionally intelligent robots are expected to be introduced later this year, one of which is said to be able to take part in conversations more complex than giving navigation(導航) assistance.”可知預計今年晚些時候將推出的一款情感智能機器人能夠參與比導航輔助更復雜的對話,所以選項D說法正確;本題是選擇說法錯誤的選項,故選B

How to avoid loneliness

Loneliness, a natural feeling, is not something most people want to experience. When you feel lonely as a result of missing a loved one or a place, or preparing for a time spent away from your friends and family, here are some ways for you to avoid it.

Focus on your health

Studies have shown that poor sleep, lack of physical activity and unhealthy food can let you feel tired and sad, causing the feeling of loneliness. Try to get eight hours of sleep every night, try to take part in at least 30 minutes of physical activity, and don’t eat junk food. Eating more fruits and vegetables will also help.

Bring an old hobby back to life

It’s much more difficult to feel lonely if you’re actively enjoying an activity, especially one that you are good at. If you’ve got a hobby that you love, try to spare time for your hobby even if you are busy, such as reading, playing a sport, cooking, painting...

Avoid staying at home all day long

Spending your time in nature will probably improve your feelings and help you get over loneliness. Sunshine makes you feel happier and less focused on your loneliness. You can go hiking, go boating or go on a bike ride if you are not interested in just walking around. You may go for a coffee with your friends or even make big plans so that you have events to look forward to. First, you can make possible activities you might want to take part in, then, spend a few days planning out the event, so that you are fully prepared and stress-free. If possible, include other people in your plan to make your activity more interesting.

All in all, it seems that facing your own loneliness is the first step to avoid loneliness. Do your best to follow the things above. It takes efforts, but it is worth your try.

Most people don’t want to experience loneliness. When you feel lonely1 of some unpleasant things, you can do something to make youself feel better.

【題目】 How about forgetting bad memories?

Can we forget bad memories? Someone might tell you that time is the only “cure”. But this might be not true.

Researchers at Canada's McGill University have tested a pill that can help you forget bad memories. They tested it on 60 people and found it to be useful.

All 60 people had experienced painful romantic relationships and wanted to forget them. In the study, they were asked to write about these bad memories. Then, they took a pill that is usually used to treat high blood pressure (血壓). They then recalled their bad memories by reading what they wrote earlier. In the end, they talked about their feelings, saying that they were finally able to forget their bad experiences.

Dr. Alain Brunet, who led the study, believes that the pill can ease(緩解)the pain that bad memories bring. People can take it after bad things happen to them.

How did the pill do this? In fact, your memories change all the time. They’re like papers on your computer. Every time you recall and "open” the papers, you might happen to make some changes and "save" them. Researchers believe that the pill can stop something in the brain from "re-saving" these memories. This means some details of the memory are lost.

However, there are some ethical (倫理的)worries about this treatment. Some people might use it to forget things that they should be learning from, such as when they did a crime.

A11 of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past. I'm not sure we want to erase those memories, said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

How do we form memories?

The part of our brain known as the hippocampus (海馬體)is important for forming new memories. Scientists found it after studying a patient named Henry Molaison in the 1950s. After Molaison's hippocampus got hurt during an operation, he couldn't store new memories. But he could remember memories from before the operation. This means long-term memories are stored outside the hippocampus. Scientists believe they are stored in the neocortex(新皮質),which controls attention and planning.

1The writing purpose of this passage is ________.

A.to introduce a new medical inventionB.to describe the bad influence of the pill

C.to tell stories about a patient named HenryD.to discover the fun secrets of hippocampus

2The pill tested on people can ________.

A.cause the brain to fix memoriesB.recall what they wrote down before

C.help people remember things easilyD.help people forget painful memories

3Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with in Paragraph Six?

A.Some memories are harmful to people's lives.

B.The pill can help avoid the mistakes of the past.

C.Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.

D.The pill should be used to reduce people's sufferings from bad memories.

4We can infer from the passage that________.

A.the pill can certainly stop criminals from doing crimes

B.taking the pill will be harmful to people's physical health

C.the pill has been produced and used by the public America

D.medical workers are still unsure about the influence of the pill
