When Dr.Karen McComb came to Amboseli Park, her first task was to learn the names of the one hundred or so elephants most often seen.
Scientists working in the park have learned to study elephants by watching them up close. They have a list of almost one thousand elephants. There are records for all of the elephants born since 1972. Amboseli was a good place for Dr.McComb to study animal communications. Elephants were a great subject because their lifestyle depends on communication.
Dr.McComb and her team had learned a lot about elephant communication, but they kept on thinking about one puzzling(困惑的) watch. Some families were better at distinguishing(區(qū)別) calls of friends from those of strangers.
What made some families smarter than others? The scientists searched their records for an explanation. To their surprise, there was only one factor(因素) of importance: The “smartest” families always had the oldest grandmothers. A family, as it did in all other activities, waited for some signal(信號(hào)) from the grandmother when they heard a strange contact call. And older, more experienced grandmothers were better at telling whether other elephants were strangers or friends just by their calls.
That was an important discovery. It showed how an elephant family depends on the experience of the grandmother.

Playgrounds offer kids fresh air, friends, and exercise. However, each year, more than 200,000 kids go to hospital because they are hurt in one way or another when playing on the playground. So what can we do to improve the situation(狀況)?
We should make sure the playground is safe for the children. It should be soft and thick enough, so when the children fall, they won’t hurt too much. Things like water, rocks or broken glass might cause danger to the kids. Cleaners should check the playground from time to time and clear away these dangerous things. In fact, children themselves also need to help keep the playground clean and safe. That means each time after playing they should pick up the rubbish they’ve produced. If someone finds there is something wrong with the equipment(設(shè)施), he should report to the keeper of the playground, so people will come to fix it.
Teaching kids how to play safely is also very important. Kids should know the rules of the playground, so they won’t get hurt easily. For example, they should never push when others are on seesaws or swings. If someone is going to jump off some equipment, he should first look down to make sure no other kids are in the way. Of course, wearing right clothes may also help to keep safe. Clothes with strings (繩) can get caught on equipment which may hurt the kid badly.
In short, our kids can both enjoy themselves and be safe if we are working together to improve the situation.
1.Do many kids get hurt when playing on the playground every year?
2.What things might cause danger to the kids on the playground?
3.Why should kids know the rules of the playground?
4.What kind of clothes can be caught on equipment?
5.What’s the passage mainly about?

Could the students from less developed areas in central and western China get the same educational chances as those in big cities in the east Could the children in poor rural (農(nóng)村) areas develop as well as those in rich cities Maybe the answers were “No” in the past. But now, China is trying to change the situation.
In order to help rural students grow taller and stronger. China’s Nutrition(營(yíng)養(yǎng))Improvement Program started in 2011. According to the program, a lot more money was spent improving students’ meals. More than 36 million students from 134,000 primary and junior high schools in poor rural areas have benefited from the program. They are provided with healthy food like eggs and milk from Monday to Friday at school. And the result of a survey shows that the students in those areas are much taller and stronger than before.

In our increasingly fast-paced world, most adults do not get the 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Things are even worse for those with young children. A recent study showed that about 26% of parents in the United Kingdom get less than 5 hours of sleep every night. To make tired adults relax for a while, David Lloyd Clubs, a chain of gyms and fitness centers in the UK, has introduced a napping (小睡) class is called “Nap-Ercise”.
As the name suggests, the hour-long group class, as a way to “reinvigorate (使再振作) the mind and improve moods”, does not have any exercise. Instead, clients (顧客) are guided through 15 minutes of light stretching (拉伸) to help them relax. Then, they are encouraged to cuddle (依偎) under the blankets of a comfortable bed, cover their eyes with an eye mask, and take a nap for 45 minutes. With music playing and the room set to the perfect temperature, clients can have the best possible sleep. The class is currently being offered at just one place. If popular, they will be given to more other David Lloyd Clubs.
Although the class sounds like a marketing plan, there might be some science behind it. According to a study done at the Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, participants who took a 45-minute nap in the middle of their day not only help them feel well-rested, but also deal with stress better than those who didn’t. And a different study from the University of California at Berkeley showed that a 45-minute nap in the middle of the day helps to improve learning abilities.
1.The purpose of offering the napping class is to _________.
A. give the tired people a chance to relax
B. give the homeless people a room to take a nap
C. help the people who aren’t able to sleep fall asleep
D. let people make more friends in the napping class
2.What does the last passage talk about?
A. Some studies about the napping class.
B. The advantages of taking a nap.
C. Something that should be noticed during a nap.
D. How long people should spend taking a nap.
3.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. More than a quarter of adults in the UK sleep less than 5 hours.
B. A napping class will last for about an hour.
C. The class only offers blankets, a bed, and relaxing music to clients.
D. There will be the napping class in more David Lloyd Clubs.
4.What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Group napping classes for tired clients.
B. Why people need to take a nap.
C. The different ideas about taking a nap.
D. The science behind taking a nap.
