It’s reported that more and more people choose cycling instead of driving to schools, to workplaces or to do sightseeing. The introduction of Bike-sharing Plans, pioneered by companies like Ofo and Mobike, has brought the trend to a new level.

People can unlock the shared bikes by simply using their smartphone. The bikes are equipped with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They’re popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective solution to the “l(fā)ast mile” problem, which refers to the final leg of a person’s journey.

“In places where the underground doesn’t extend (延伸到), where it’s difficult to change from one kind of transport to another, it’s so easy to get where you want to go with Mobike,” Hu Hong, 29, told AFP.She pedals to her faraway job in Shanghai.

However, the schemes have also led to problems such as illegal parking, vandalism (故意破壞) and theft.

“Bike-sharing is a greener method of transportation and provides a user-friendly experience,” said Liu Xiaoming, vice-minister of transport.“But it’s a combination of online and offline business.Operators are usually strong in online services, but lack offline business experience, which causes problems.”

To deal with these problems, the company came up with the idea of encouraging people to return the bikes to stations by rewarding free time for their next rides.

Now, Chinese service operators are also trying to address these problems. For example, Mobike sets a 100-point credit score for each user, with points taken in the case of bad behavior.Once a score drops below 80, bike rental is increased to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5-1 yuan.

Nothing could stop this man after suffering serious burns on his legs at the age of eight. Glenn Cunningham was given up by doctors who believed he would be a hopeless disabled man to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. “He will never be able to walk again,” they said, “no chance.”

The doctors examined his legs, but they had no way of looking into Glenn’s heart. He didn’t listen to the doctors and set out to walk again. Lying in bed, his thin, red legs covered with scar tissue (瘢痕組織), Glenn promised, “Next week, I’m going to get out of bed. I’m going to walk.” And he did just that.

His mother told how she used to look out of the windows to watch Glenn reach up and take hold of an old plow(犁) in the yard. With a hand on each handle (把手), he began to make his hurt legs function (起作用). And with every step of pain, he came closer to walking. Soon he began to run slower, before long he was running. When he started to run, he became even more determined(堅(jiān)決的).

“I always believed that I could walk, and I did. Now I’m going to run faster than ever.” And so he did. He became a great runner who, in 1934, set the world record of 4’06’’ in one-mile race. He was honored as the outstanding athlete of the century at Madison Square Garden.
