Nothing could stop this man after suffering serious burns on his legs at the age of eight. Glenn Cunningham was given up by doctors who believed he would be a hopeless disabled man to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. “He will never be able to walk again,” they said, “no chance.”
The doctors examined his legs, but they had no way of looking into Glenn’s heart. He didn’t listen to the doctors and set out to walk again. Lying in bed, his thin, red legs covered with scar tissue (瘢痕組織), Glenn promised, “Next week, I’m going to get out of bed. I’m going to walk.” And he did just that.
His mother told how she used to look out of the windows to watch Glenn reach up and take hold of an old plow(犁) in the yard. With a hand on each handle (把手), he began to make his hurt legs function (起作用). And with every step of pain, he came closer to walking. Soon he began to run slower, before long he was running. When he started to run, he became even more determined(堅(jiān)決的).
“I always believed that I could walk, and I did. Now I’m going to run faster than ever.” And so he did. He became a great runner who, in 1934, set the world record of 4’06’’ in one-mile race. He was honored as the outstanding athlete of the century at Madison Square Garden.

Africa is the second largest continent(大陸) in the world. To its southeast lies the Indian Ocean, and toward the west is the Atlantic Ocean. It is also the continent with the world’s second largest population(more than 1 billion) behind Asia.
The continent is home to the world’s tallest animal, giraffes. People can also find crocodiles(鱷魚), elephants, zebras and hippos(河馬) there.
Africa is great to visit. About 60 percent of Africa is made up of drylands and deserts. The most famous one is the Sahara, the largest hot desert in the world. Mount Kilimanjaro(乞力馬扎羅山) in east Africa stands 5895metres into the sky. It is the highest point in the continent. Though it lies in the tropics(熱帶), it is covered with ice and snow year-round. The famous East Africa’s Great Rift Valley(東非大裂谷) goes through the land of Africa. As the longest rift on Earth, it is easy to see from the space.
The continent is famous for its hundreds of ethnic(種族) groups. The three largest ethnic groups are the Hausa, Lgbo and Yoruba. They are all in west Africa. West Africa is also rich in natural resources like cocoa, diamonds and coffee. Cote d’lvoire(科特迪瓦) is the world’s biggest producer of cocoa.
Although many places in Africa are poor, this is not the whole picture. South Africa is the richest country in Africa. Some parts of the country are wealthy. Modern and well-developed roads are common everywhere. You can also spend a day in a large shopping mall or taste delicious seafood in a restaurant.
