【題目】Bai Yansong, a famous TV host, expressed his support for students wearing green scarves (領巾) at a primary school in Xi’an. He wore a green tie on a TV program on October 19, 2011.

“I just want the students to know that I’m also wearing a green one. And we are all great people and are as good as those wearing red scarves,” he said.

The First Experimental Primary School in Xi’an made children with poor schoolwork and behaviour wear green scarves. Parents were angry. “The punish-ment is too bad. All children need their self-esteem (自尊) even though they are very young, and they know the green scarf means something is not quite right. It does harm to students’ self-esteem,” said one mother.

Educational expert (專家) Li Zhenxi said that school students have strong self-esteem. They hope to be respected (尊重) and understood. Punishment will hurt them. “It’s better to encourage them rather than call them ‘bad’ students,” he said. Now, the school has stopped the practice.

Some schools think more of students’ self-esteem and have done better in protecting students’ privacy

(隱私) and encouraging them. In American schools, teachers post test results on the wall. Instead of using students’ names, they use secret numbers. This way, students know their secret numbers and can check their own grades only. Many teachers in China tell students their grades by sending text messages to their students.

Schools and teachers are doing more for students’ self-esteem. But it is a long way. Both teachers and parents should realize that test scores are not the only measure (標準) of a student’s ability. Everyone has his own strengths and everyone can make great progress by working hard. Adults should make students get to know their own value. The most important is to make students believe in themselves.

【題目】Finally Home

Last year, my parents moved to this town. I had to go to a new school and found no one to be friends with because I wasn’t interested in the topics most of my classmates liked.

“Maybe I’ll never have real friends,” I thought.

I closed my eyes and imagined playing my drums. Suddenly, I heard the sound of a guitar.

I followed the sound and found out that was a band. I recognized the guitar player at my first sight and so did he.

“Hey, you’re Cassie from my class!” his voice surprised me.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I just haven’t heard any live music in this town before! You sound great—did you guys write that song?”

“Yeah—well, we’re still working on it. I’m Matt.” He stood up and held out his hand.

“Mind if I listen in?” I asked in a low voice.

“Not at all,” Matt said, smiling. “Maybe you can give us some suggestions!”

The song was pretty good and I could really improve it with my drum skills. Behind my drum set was the one place I felt completely like myself. But I wasn’t sure if I wanted to open that door to the world.

“Hey, do you play drums?” Matt asked suddenly.

His question surprised me. How did he know? And then I followed his eyes to my hands, which had been beating a rhythm(節(jié)奏) on the floor. I tried to say no, but my heart stopped me from refusing. “Sure, I’ve been playing for a few years,” I said finally.

“Oh, wow! You’ve got to join us!” Matt said. “I have some drums over here.”

I looked at their shiny faces. “Absolutely. I would love to play!” I replied.

“One, two, three, four!” Matt counted and began singing, and I knew I was finally home.

【題目】Do you dream of having a sister or brother?According to the recent CCTV news report,China has relaxed its one-child policy (政策) to two-child policy. The government has allowed families to have two children.

Tencent did a survey last week about the two-child policy. On the one hand,up to 53% of parents say they are willing to have a second child. “I am excited about hearing the news. To have two kids means the children can look after each other in the future. Not only can they have a partner to play with, but they can also learn to help one another. This helps them to develop a better personality. I think I won't miss the chance to own a second kid,” says Li Mei,a mother of a 5-year-old daughter from Shanghai.

On the other hand, about 40% of parents say they may not have a second child. One reason is that they are afraid that the child's everyday expenses (費用) and education would be a big problem. They couldn't afford them. “I think the policy itself is pretty good, but I don't think it interests me. I won't consider a second child. Everything is very expensive at present, and I find it very difficult to raise another child,” says Han Dong from Chongqing, who has just had a boy.

Though people have different opinions, they agree that China has made great progress already in the two-child policy.
