Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway should pay me back£12, so you owe me the money,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man who was working at the office. “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely, “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her, “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,” she answered, shyly, “The beach was lovely. And I can swim, too!”
“That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three…”
“I’m four,” the child said proudly, “I’ll be four and a half.”
Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said, “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”
“Er, well…”woman looked at the child, “I mean… she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”
“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs…let me see…£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe£1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine…”

Life is important to all of us. So we must respect our lives. When you want to run across the street to catch the bus, stop to think about it. If you do, you’ll have to pay a fine (罰款) or get hurt.
Traffic accidents killed more than 104,000 people in China last year. Chinese cities have more cars than ever. Drivers and pedestrians (行人) must work together to make the streets safer.
New traffic laws say that if people cross the street when the light is red, they can be fined as much as 50 yuan. The law has new rules for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers have to slow down when they are close to crosswalks. If people are in a crosswalk, cars must stop to let them walk.
There are rules for bus drivers, too. If bus drivers smoke, drink or make phone calls while driving, they can be fined. Buses that carry too many people are also against the law.
Pedestrians will have to walk more safely under the new law. They must cross streets at crosswalks. Also, they shouldn’t climb over the fences (柵欄) along streets.
Do you ride a bike to school? It’s not a good idea to carry classmates on the back. You could be fined 50 yuan. And stay in the bike lane (車道) when you’re riding. The big roads are for cars and buses.
Do you like to ride your uncle’s motorbike? When you put on your helmet (頭盔), ask him to put one on, too. “People on motorbikes must wear helmets”, the new law says. If they don’t, they’ll have to pay 200 yuan. When you ride in cars, don’t forget to put on your seat belt, even if you’re going for a short taxi ride. It could save your life.
If you see a hit-and-run (肇事逃逸), tell the police. They may give you a reward (獎(jiǎng)賞).
And don’t be afraid to help people to the hospital if they are hurt in an accident. Don’t worry about money. The new law says that doctors must take care of them even if they can’t pay right away.

At the age of sixteen, I went on my first volunteer program in West Virginia to repair or build homes for poor families. When we arrived, we discovered that the family we were going to help was living in a trailer(拖車式活動(dòng)房)that was in poor condition, no bigger than two parking spaces. A group of people had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another appeared.
We soon decided that the only way was to build a new house. It was something unusual because normally our goal was to repair old homes. The family was pleased with their new house that was 20 by 30 feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen.
On Tuesday of that week, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, “What do you want for your new room?” Kids in the families we had helped usually wanted toys or posters, so we were surprised when Josh, the oldest boy said, “We just want beds.” The boys had never slept in a bed. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding.
On Friday when we saw the truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. They were very excited.
That afternoon, while we were setting up the beds, Eric ran into the house to watch us with wide eyes. As Maggie, a member of our group, put one of the pillows on the bed, Eric asked, “What is that?”
“A pillow,” she replied.
“What do you do with it?” Eric went on asking.
“When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” Maggie answered softly. Tears came to our eyes as she handed Eric the pillow.
“Oh . . . that’s soft,” he said, holding it tightly.
Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems very urgent(急迫的), my dad always asks, “Do you have a pillow?” We know exactly what he means.
小題1:Why did the writer’s group build a new house for the family?
A.Because it was their normal work.
B.Because the family asked them to do it.
C.Because the trailer could no longer be repaired.
D.Because they thought it was a perfect gift for the family.
小題2:What can we learn from the story?
A.The family needed two parking spaces.
B.The boys of the family wanted toys and posters.
C.The family were excited about the beds and bedding.
D.The writer’s group made some furniture for the family.
小題3:What is the best title for this passage?
A.The PillowB.A New House
C.The FamilyD.An Interesting Program
