【題目】Ⅰ met Jim last week. We ________ each other for about twenty years since we left Japan.

A.didn't meetB.don't meetC.haven't metD.hadn't met

根據(jù)上文“Ⅰ met Jim last week.”和時間狀語從句“since we left Japan”可知離開日本到上周大約二十年是過去的過去,可知使用過去完成時;故選D。

A. miss B. a little C. memorize D. at least E. comfortable

Dear Li Yang

Thank you for your e-mail. I am fine, and enjoying my time at university in Manchester very much. I am happy to answer your questions about studying here in the UK.

I was also 1 nervous before I got here, but once I arrived I soon felt happy. You asked me about the kinds of clothes you should bring. You should bring 2 one formal outfit for important dinners, and remember to bring lots of warm 3 clothes, as well. Yes, I did say ‘warm’, because it is a bit cold here until the summer!

My mum wanted to make sure that I packed lots of special food so that I would not 4 her Chinese cooking too much. However, there are many different kinds of food in the UK, and I can buy all my favourite foods at small Chinese shops. There are also lots of cheap restaurants near the university.

A. tastes B. dishes C. at the end of D. by the way E. shelves

Another suggestion is to learn how to cook some of your favourite 5 before you come. Chinese food in England 6 very different to the food back home. You can also go to the university canteen—eating with others is a great way to make new friends.

You will probably live in the halls of residence in your first year. People usually have their own room, with a desk, 7 and a bed. The bathrooms and kitchen are usually 8 the corridor. The kitchen is also a great place to meet the students in your hall. Remember that everyone is nervous, so don’t be afraid to talk to the people you meet.

Good luck! I am sure you will have a wonderful time.

【題目】 Life is full of surprises and you never know how things will turn out.

Sir John Gurdon is a good example of this. As a boy, he was told he was hopeless in science and finished bottom of his class. However, aged 79, the very same Gurdon shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Japanese stem cell(干細胞) researcher Shinya Yamanaka.

Like so many scientists, Gurdon shows us where the power of curiosity and perseverance(堅持不懈) can lead.

At the age of 15 in 1948, Gurdon ranked last out of the 250 boys at his high school in biology and every other science subject. Gurdon's high school science teacher even said that his dream of becoming a scientist was quite ridiculous

In spite of his teacher's criticism(批評), Gurdon followed his curiosity and kept working hard. He went to the lab earlier and left later than anyone else. He experienced thousands of failures.

“My own belief is that we will, in the end, understand everything about how cells actually work,” Gurdon said.

In 1962, Gurdon took a cell from an adult frog and moved its genetic(基因的) information into an egg cell. The egg cell then grew into a clone(克隆) of the adult frog. This technique later helped to create the sheep Dolly in 1996, the first cloned mammal(哺乳動物) in the world.

In 2006, Gurdon's work was developed by Yamanaka to show that a sample(樣本) of a person's skin can be used to create stem cells. Using this technique, doctors can repair a patient's heart after a heart attack.

“Luck favors the prepared mind,”Gurdon told the Nobel Prize Organization. “Ninety percent of the time things don't work, but when they do, you have to seize (抓住) the chance.”
