Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. It is also the second largest lake in the world. It is an important lake because it is one of the sources(源頭) for the longest river in the world, the Nile River. Lake Victoria provides a source of water, food, and power(電力) for several African countries. Lake Victoria is a big part of African life.
Unfortunately, Lake Victoria has a problem. It is shrinking. There are several power stations at Lake Victoria in Uganda. These are on the Nile River, and besides producing power, they keep the water of the lake at a certain level. For the past forty years, that level has been 11.9 meters. Over the last several years, the water level has dropped by about 2.5 meters. There seem to be several reasons for this drop.
One possible reason is drought(干旱). Drought has been very bad in the area since 2000. Lake Victoria gets all of its water from rain, so the drought means less water in the lake.
However, some environmentalists believe that the real problem is the power plants(工廠) on Lake Victoria. Uganda depends on those power plants for most of its power, and they made the power plants larger in 2000. Many people believe the power plants have been taking too much water off Lake Victoria. As a result, they have been asked to use less water until Lake Victoria goes back to its old level.
Whether the low water level is caused by drought or power plants, the result is the same. This is already a poor area of Africa, where many people live a really hard life. People, animals and plants around Lake Victoria will suffer even more from low water levels on the lake. Many people need Lake Victoria for fishing or growing food. Fish need the water to live, and animals need it for water. Plants around the lake will die without the water, and then more animals and people will suffer. Unless the lake fills soon, many people will suffer and die.

The London Olympic Games are coming soon. This summer, Chinese sports fans will be able to watch the exciting games in 3-D on CCTV.
When you watch 3-D movies or TV, you have to wear a special pair of glasses. The 3-D glasses make the people and the things on the screen look like they are in the room with you.
3-D, means having three *dimensions: *width, height and *depth. 3-D technology is based on the way the human brain and eye work. Because the *pupils of a person’s eyes are about 6.5cm apart, when we look at something, each eye sees it from different *angle. Our eyes send the two pictures to our brain, and the brain puts them together. The small difference between the picture from the right eye and the picture from the left eye make us see depth.
While watching 2-D films, we don’t have to wear the special glasses. We see the pictures in two dimensions, each eye get the same information. This is because there is only one way of watching it.
So the aim of 3-D technology is to get a different picture into each eye of the person. It uses two film *projectors. One *projects a left eye picture and the other projects a right eye picture. When we are in the cinema, we can see different pictures in each eye at the same time with the help of the 3-D glasses.
While watching 3-D films, we feel that we are actually in the same environment as the things we are watching. However, some people are against watching 3-D films. One of the reasons is the 3-D glasses makes the screen of the film or TV look darker. It is bad for eyes. What’s more, people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3-D movies, because their brains need to work harder to “read” the pictures.
【小題1】Paragraph 3 mainly tells us __________.

A.how we see things in 3-D B.how we watch the Olympic Games
C.how 3-D films are made D.where we watch 3-D films or TV
【小題2】When we watch a 2-D film, each of our eyes get ________ information.
A.noB.differentC.darkD.the same
【小題3】Which is the following is right according to the passage?
A.We don’t have to wear 3-D glasses if we watch games in 3-D on TV.
B.The 3-D technology is based on the way the human ear and eye work.
C.All the people can have fun watching 3-D movies or TV for a long time.
D.3-D glasses make us see different pictures in each eye at the same time.
【小題4】Why are some people against watching 3-D films? Because ____________.
A.they make them more excited or sadder
B.3-D glasses make the screen look darker
C.3-D films make all people get headaches
D.they dislike watching the Olympic Games

What can you do on the Internet? Many of us like to read the news, buy things and play games. Some students now have a new use for the Internet – helping them with their homework.
Tina, 14, from Shenzhen, Guangdong, often searches online for the answers to her math problems. She said sometimes she and even her parents don’t know the answers to the problems, so she has to turn to the Internet.
“I can see how other people work out these problems and learn from them,” Tina said. “It’s easy and saves time.”
But not all the students welcome this. Leo, 15, from Hangzhou, Zhejiang, thinks it may make students stop thinking.
“We should think over the problems first. Simply copying the answers won’t improve our abilities. ” he said.
In the eyes of Wang Zhaoming, a Shanghai teacher, the success of all this is down to the students. If they use the Internet properly (適當?shù)?, it could be a good tool for study, Wang said.
“Students should first think about the problems by themselves. As for the online answers, they should choose the best among different ones. Just as in face-to-face communication, there are some basic rules of behavior(行為) that should be followed on the Internet. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “ Would I say that to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. If someone in the chat room is rude to you, you needn’t to fire back. You should either ignore(不理睬) the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
Everyone was new to the network once. Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, be kind about it. If you do decide to tell someone about the mistake, point it out politely. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended(冒犯). You’d better not ask others questions about their age, sex and families. Garden building is considered an important part of Chinese culture. Some people say that if you have never walked through a Chinese garden, you cannot say that you have really visited China.
Traditional Chinese gardens are located(位于)in North China in such places as Beihai Park, the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City. In larger imperial gardens, the main buildings are connected by an imaginary(虛構(gòu)的) line in the middle of the garden on the north-south axis(軸). Other features (特征)of imperial gardens are colored-paintings, man-made hills and lakes.
Most private gardens are found in the south, especially in cities south of the Yangtze River. Private gardens were mostly built at one side or at the back of the houses. Around the beautiful scene are small open areas with beautiful shaped-doors through which visitors can enjoy the sights. They are open on all sides and are often near the water so that the whole scene can be enjoyed. Suzhou, known as the home of gardens, displays the most and the best Chinese traditional private gardens. Different parts of it are examples of the garden style of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The landscape garden contains a number of pleasant natural scenes and some fairy tales. The ancient Chinese used to call the garden landscape “Jing” , which means “scene” in English.
