While watching the Olympics the other night,I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold medal,or a world record broken, but a show of courage.

The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them false started,so they were disqualified. That left only one to compete. It would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is important.

I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was wrong.I’m not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one,and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced,it was evident that the man was not out for gold – his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh.Clearly this man was not a medal competitor.

I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back.It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes and you could tell he was worn out.But in those few awful strokes, the crowd had changed.

No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shout “Come on,you can do it!” and he did.

A clear minute past the average swimmer, this young man finally finished his race. The crowd went wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have.Even though he recorded one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors.

Just a short year ago,he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to Sydney.

In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals feeling they have somehow been cheated out of gold,or when they act so proudly in front of their competitors,it is nice to watch an underdog.

1.From the passage we can learn that the young man .

A.made his turn to start back pitifully

B.was skillful in freestyle in the game

C.swam faster than the average swimmer

D.was not capable enough to win the medal

2.The crowd changed their attitudes because .

A.they felt sorry for the young man

B.they were moved by the young man’s courage

C.they wanted to show their sympathy

D.they meant to please the young man

3.According to the passage,“it is nice to watch an underdog” probably means .

A.it’s amazing to watch an ordinary man challenging himself

B.it’s amusing to watch a man with awful swimming skills

C.it’s cheerful for athletes to act proudly before their competitors

D.it’s brave enough for some athletes to remove the silver medals

4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.The event started with three men,two of whom were disqualified later.

B.The crowd started to laugh at the athlete’s arms waving in an attempt at freestyle.

The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all , sometimes it can be confusing .

October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar . Universities have something called Freshers’ Week for their newcomers. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends , join lots of clubs and settle into university life.

However , having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind , the prospect (前景) of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-wracking (令人焦慮不安的). Where do you start ? Who should you make friends with ? Which clubs should you join ?

Luckily , there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you are worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot . So just take it all in slowly . Don’t rush into anything that you’ll regret for the next three years.

Here are some top advice from past students on how to survive Freshers’ Week :

Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette(禮節(jié)). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.

Be kind . Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends.

Be social . The more active you are , the more likely you’ll be to meet new people than if you’re someone who never leaves his room .

Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you’re in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you’re friendly .

A few things to do during weekends to improve your life

Weekend at last! Something you’re so looking forward to after a tiring week at work. Here are several tips on how to make the most of your weekends.

Spend time with loved ones. Reconnect with family members or friends you neglected(疏忽) lately. Don’t do it out of guilt or because you have to. Do it because you want to. Reach out to them to see how they are doing. 1. Return their calls if you were busy when they last tried to reach you. Talk to them. Listen to them. Be there for them.

2. Stay away from TV, iPad, iPhone and any other electronic devices. Unplug! Your brain needs to clear up from all the stress you’ve put on yourself during the week. Why not read a book instead? A paper one. Seriously, when was the last time you did that?

Laugh, laugh and laugh again. You can never have enough of it. Laugh is the best medicine ever. 3. For example, it helps you manage stress, strengthen your immune system and you are 40 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack.

Express appreciation. 4. Be grateful for your family, friends, health, the food you put on the table, the clothes you wear and the air that you breathe.
