What we wear at home is our own business. We can dress freely at home. No one will care or debate about it. _【1】_ . Why? That’s because the way we dress affects us and other people. It is basically a matter of self respect and respect for others.
According to a famous behavioral economist, humans have a pattern of irrational(不理智的) behaviours. One of them is called “the effect of expectation”. Ariely says that when a person believes beforehand that something is good, he will look upon it generally as good. _【2】 . If you wear a cheap old T-shirt like a beggar, the respect and expectation that you gain from people around you will be poor.
Some people might argue that we should have the freedom to dress however we want regardless of what people think. They can also argue that we should not judge people based on how a person dresses. _【3】_ . People judge us based on how we look, and that is a fact that we should accept.
In fact, we don’t have to spend a lot of money buying the most expensive clothes. It doesn’t make sense to go to a supermarket in a tux (晚禮服). 【4】 . Experts suggest that we should have various levels of dressing. For example, level 1: dressing for staying at home, level 2: casual dress for going out with friends, level 3: formal dress for work, level 4: attire (盛裝) for business functions and so on.
_【5】_ . When we coose clothes to wear, we should be aware of how it makes us generally look. At least we should be aware of it instead of just wearing it and going without giving a second thought. Dressing up is how you “sell” yourself so don’t take it too lightly.
A. The dress should match the occasion.
B. It is helpful to have fashion awareness when we dress.
C. Therefore, the look is important for a first impression.
D. That is pretty ideal, but it is not practical in the real world.
E. It changes people’s reactions towards you in a positive way.
F. Therefore, it is a good idea to be aware of how we behave at home.
G. However, when we dress up and go out to public places, it becomes an issue.
【1】G
【2】C
【3】D
【4】A
【5】B
We can dress freely at home. No one will care or debate about it. 故G項(xiàng)“However, when we dress up and go out to public places, it becomes an issue.”
Ariely says that when a person believes beforehand that something is good, he will look upon it generally as good. 故C項(xiàng)“Therefore, the look is important for a first impression”符合上下文語(yǔ)境。
【3】D 橫線(xiàn)前兩句......people based on how a person dresses. People judge us based on how we look, and that is a fact that we should accept. 故D項(xiàng)“That is pretty ideal, but it is not practical in the real world.”
It doesn’t make sense to go to a supermarket in a tux (晚禮服). 故A正確。
When we choose clothes to wear, we should be aware of how it makes us generally look.

Their cheery song brightens many a winter's day. But robins(知更鳥(niǎo)) are in danger of wearing themselves out by singing too much. Robins are singing all night一 as well as during the day, British-based researchers say.
David Dominoni, of Glasgow University, said that light from street lamps, takeaway signs and homes is affecting the birds' biological clock, leading to them being wide awake when they should be asleep.
Dr Dominoni, who is putting cameras inside nesting boxes to track sleeping patterns, said lack of sleep could put the birds' health at risk. His study shows that when robins are exposed to light at night in the lab, it leads to some genes being active at the wrong time of day. And the more birds are exposed to light, the more active they are at night.
He told people at a conference, "There have been a couple of studies suggesting they are increasing their song output at night and during the day they are still singing. Singing is a costly behaviour and it takes energy. So by increasing their song output, there might be some costs of energy."
And it is not just robins that are being kept awake by artificial light. Blackoiids and seagulls are also being more nocturnal. Dr Dominoni said, "In Glasgow where I live, gulls are a serious problem. I have people coming to me saying `You are the bird expert. Can you help us kill these gulls?'.During the breeding(繁殖)season, between April and June, they are very active at night and very noisy and people can't sleep."
Although Dr Dominoni has only studied light pollution, other research concluded that robins living in noisy cities have started to sing at night to make themselves heard over loud noise.
However, some birds thrive(興旺)in noisy environments. A study from California Polytechnic University found more hummingbirds in areas with heavy industrial machinery. It is thought that they are capitalizing on their predators(天敵)fleeing to quieter areas.
【1】According to Dr Dominoni's study, what causes robins to sing so much?
A. The breeding season.
B. The light in modem.
C. The dangerous environment.
D. The noise from heavy machinery.
【2】What is the researchers' concern over the increase of birds' song output?
A. The environment might be polluted.
B. The birds' health might be damaged.
C. The industry cost might be increased
D. The people's hearing might be affected.
【3】What does the underlined word "nocturnal" in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Active at night.
B. Inactive at night.
C. Active during the day.
D. Inactive during the day.
【4】Why do some birds thrive in noisy environments?
A. Because there are fewer dangers.
B. Because there is more food to eat.
C. Because there is less light pollution
D. Because there are more places to take shelter.

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter form the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could — he huddled (蜷縮) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday,Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期節(jié)目) of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
【1】What happened to Nicholas one Sunday afternoon?
A. He hurt his eyes. B. He broke his skis.
C. He got lost. D. He caught a cold.
【2】How did Nicholas keep himself warm?
A. He found a shelter. B. He built a snow cave.

How to Succeed in Science
To succeed in science, you need a lot more than luck. In my view, you have to combine intelligence with a willingness not to follow conventions when they block your path forward. Thus, these have come to be my rules for success.
1. 【1】
That might sound proud, but the fact is that you must always turn to people who are brighter than yourself. It’s like playing any game. Even as a child, I never wanted to play games with anyone who was as bad as I was. If you win, it gives you no pleasure. And in the game of science or life, the highest goal isn’t simply to win; it’s to win at something really difficult. 【2】
2. Take risks
To make a huge success, a scientist has to be prepared to get into deep trouble. If you are going to make a huge jump in science, you will very likely be unqualified to succeed by definition. 【3】 This can be more than personally upsetting.
3. Never do anything that bores you.
My experience in science is that someone is always telling you to do things, and then leave you alone. I’m not good enough to do well in something I dislike. 【4】
It’s very hard to succeed if you don’t want to be with other scientists — you have to go to key meetings where you spot key facts that would have escaped you. And you have to chat with your competitors, even if you find them objectionable.
So my final rule is: 【5】
A. Meet challenges with great courage.
B. If you can’t stand to be with your real peers, get out of science.
C. Put another way, it’s to go somewhere beyond your ability and come out on top.
D. Be sure you always have someone to save you from a deep mess.
E. Avoid foolish people.
F. In fact, I find it hard to do well in something I like.
G. Besides, you even have to be prepared to disbelieve your scientific heroes.

You feel happiest when you create a healthy balance between giving and receiving. If you give and give without making time to fill your own needs, then it's likely you will burn out, or feel upset. When you take and take without giving anything back, you never feel fulfilled, so you are always searching for ways to fill the void in your life.
The way to create a healthy balance between giving and receiving is to know and then live by your values. I break values up into two groups which I call being values and having values. Your being values are the personalities of the ideal person you would like to be. I suggest to my clients that they choose three being values that they are willing to make a promise to live by. An example of some being values are: kind, loving, generous, peaceful, wise and even powerful. By acting on these values you give to others through your actions and you inspire others by being a positive role model. Mastering being these personalities becomes your life purpose.
Your having values are the feelings you need to create in order to be happy. These could be companionship, achievement, support, being valued or financial security. This is what you receive. You take responsibility for filling your own needs by taking steps to create these feelings and conditions in your life.
When you make a promise to live by your being values, it becomes easier to make conscious (慎重的) choices rather than reactionary (反動(dòng)的) ones. If our usual pattern is to talk about your problems, you could choose to think and act like a calm person. A calm person might go for a walk, or set a time limit before responding. If your usual pattern is to worry, you could choose to act like a responsible or wise person. In other words, you would act like the person you choose to be—this is the key to personal power.
When you choose to act on your values, you will not only feel good about yourself, but also strengthen your chosen beliefs. Over time, acting in this way changes how you see the world, and in turn the way other people think of you.
【1】The main purpose of this passage is to .
A. persuade the readers to make a promise
B. explain to the readers what personal values are
C. inform the readers how to be truly happy
D. instruct the readers how to make wise choices
【2】According to the text, living by your being values, you would .
A. gain a lot of power
B. form positive personality
C. seek all human virtues
D. fill your own needs
【3】The underlined word "void" in Paragraph l means .
A. a feeling of emptiness
B. an absence of one's mind
C. a break of continuity
D. a state of confusion
【4】What can be inferred from the text?
A. Having values are better than being values.
B. A calm person does not choose to complain.
C. The way other people think of you decides who you are.
D. A responsible person does not
