Who give us life, raise us and are our constant support and wellwishers? Our mothers. That’s why millions of people across the world take Mother’s Day as an opportunity to express thanks and send best wishes to their moms.
However, the celebration of Mother’s Day is not the recent thing that many believe it to be. It was the ancient Greeks who started the tradition by celebrating their annual spring festival in honor of Rhea, the mother of many gods and goddesses.
Later, in the 1600s, Mothering Sunday came to be celebrated in England. On the fourth Sunday of Lent (大齋期), children brought flowers and special fruitcakes to show their respect for their mothers. It may be the root of the modern Mother’s Day.
Thanks to the great efforts of Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, Mother’s Day became an official festival in the US. It is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Later, many countries began to celebrate this day as Mother’s Day.
Today, Mother’s Day is an international festival honoring mothers. It is celebrated all over the world in different ways. In Western countries, the most common way is to treat mothers with breakfast in bed .Kids often allow their mothers to sleep till late in the morning while they prepare her favorite breakfast with their fathers. Some also make handmade gifts or buy beautiful carnations (康乃馨). It is the day when you acknowledge your mothers contribution in your life and pay a tribute (禮品) to her, often with flowers and gifts. It complements Father’s Day, the celebration honoring fathers.
Today, Mother’s Day is a day celebrated on various days in many places around the world.

Michael, a normal American, stays home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After work he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his life style is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from communicating with our fellow human beings.
The world of business is one area in which technology is separating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their job at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. Also, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts.
Another area in which technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms.
小題1:The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means _______.
A.Michael is a person full of imagination and his dreams can come true
B.Michael is not a real person but the life style does exist
C.Michael has ambitions but he can’t make his dreams come true
D.Michael is full of imagination and his life style is common nowadays
小題2:What does the author discuss in the last paragraph ?
A.Technology is changing ways of entertainment.
B.People will never go to the concert in future.
C.How to borrow videotapes at home.
D.How to see a movie at home.
小題3: What is the main idea of the passage?
A.We may no longer need to communicate with other people.
B.Modern technology seems to be separating people.
C.We may no longer need to work in the office.
D.Modern technology makes it possible for us to work at home.

Before the opening of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914,the only way ships could leave Boston was on a route around Race Point—the northern tip of Cape Cod.However, navigation during the 18th century was a nightmare, because the floating cross current(交叉氣流) around Race Point caused countless accidents. So building a lighthouse to lighten the place was very necessary.
As early as 1808,the people of Provincetown requested a lighthouse on Race Point, but it took Congress eight years to react when they finally paid $ 8,000 on April 27,1816 to build a lighthouse —Race Point Light, which was located in the town of Provincetown,Massachusetts. It was first built of stone 25 feet high with no foundation and its light was 30 feet above the sea.It was equipped with one of the nation's earliest revolving lights.
Actually, there were two other lighthouses on Cape Cod,but they were hit by a storm in October 1841.In the following year,Race Point Light was examined by I.W.P.Lewis,who realized the light's importance. He said,“The light should be useful to all ships leaving Boston. However, its illuminating power is so weak that people would hardly be able to differentiate it from the lights set on the ships which stay in the bay,or close by.It hasn't played its role as a lighthouse well.”
The result was that old lighthouse was destroyed and a new iron lighthouse with a proper foundation was put up to take its place. The new lighthouse was 45 feet high.Although the original keeper's house was in good repair,it was destroyed too and a new one was built.Today the lighthouse has been automated(自動(dòng)化)and Race Point Light is still an active aid to navigation.
You can park at Race Point Beach and walk about 45 minutes to the lighthouse.Sunset at Race Point Light is one of the Cape Cod's most popular scenes. And at times whales can be seen in the lighthouse. For reservations to stay one night in the keeper's house at Race Point call(508)487-9930.

Before Alaska became part of the U.S., it had been owned by Russia. Trading posts and small settlements were scattered along the coast. The rest of land was left unexplored. The Russians were mainly interested in the wealth of furs from the vast herds of seals they found there.
By the mid-1800’s, most of the seal herds had been wiped out, and Russia no longer wanted to keep Alaska. William Seward, Secretary of State for President Johnson, believed the United States should buy Alaska from Russia. President Johnson wasn’t so sure it was a wise way to spend U.S. money, but he agreed to let Seward discuss it with the Russians. Acting quickly, Seward made a deal. On March 30, 1867, he signed an agreement for the U.S. to pay seven million dollars for the land.

Since new technologies are ever growing, employers now have the chance to monitor (監(jiān)控) their employees to make them spare more time to work when they use their phones, computer terminals, emails and even when an employee is using the Internet.
Recent surveys have shown that a majority of employers monitor their employees’ activities. It was found that three fourths of employers monitored the websites their employees visited in order to prevent improper surfing. The survey further indicated that 65% of employers used software to block connections to websites considered off limits to employees. One third of employers monitored their employees’ number of keystrokes and the amount of time spent on the keyboard and lastly just over half of the employers surveyed review and kept email messages.
Most of the time, email is not considered private if the email system is used at a company, the employer owns it and is allowed to review its contents.Email messages that are sent within the company, as well as those that are sent from the employee’s terminal to another company, or from another company to the employee are subject to monitoring. If an email is deleted out of the employee’s account, that doesn’t mean that they are totally deleted. The messages are kept in memory.Emails are often backed up along with other important data from the computer system. If an employer’s email policy specifically states that messages marked as “private” will be kept confidential (機(jī)密的),however, there may also be some exceptions to that policy (政策).
In order to know their employer’s email policy, employees should read over the employee handbook. If the handbook doesn’t address the issue of email monitoring, they should speak with their employer about their policy for emails and privacy.Currently there are very few laws that address workplace privacy; however, there are some organizations that are working to advocate for employees so that there will be a stronger government regulation of employee monitoring activities.
