Singles' Day falls on every November 11th. No one is quite sure exactly who first thought it up, and the most widely-accepted story is that it emerged from the dorms of Nanjing University in 1993 when four single male students got together to discuss how to break free of the loneliness of single life. One suggested that because of the ones in the date, November 11 would be a good day to organize activities for singles.
Singles' Day, started by a small group of friends, gradually grew into something like the anti-Valentine's Day, a day China's single young people could use as an excuse to get together and have fun together.
Originally about being with friends and having fun, now Singles' Day is about shopping — mostly online shopping. How did this happen? It's a long story, but the short answer is Alibaba.
By the late 2000s, most of China's Internet users were familiar with Singles' Day. There might have been some small shops online and offline offering sales on that day earlier, but no major company until Alibaba launched its first Singles' Day online sale in 2009.
In that first year, Alibaba was the only major ecommerce company to offer a sale, and it featured just 27 brands offering discounts via its T-mall marketplace. The sale was definitely successful, but it wasn't enough to redefine the holiday on its own.
In the following year, Alibaba went bigger, offering more brands and deeper discounts. But other companies had noticed the potential of the 2009 sales bonanza and decided to follow suit. E-commerce platforms like JD had their first major Singles' Day sales in 2010, and overnight Singles' Day went from a T-mall sale to something that was beginning to look like Cyber Monday in some western countries.
Over the next few years, Alibaba, JD, and other Chinese e-commerce players all expanded their one-day discounts, and sales grew exponentially(以指數(shù)方式). On Singles' Day in 2012, Alibaba's marketplaces, Taobao and T-mall, did about $3 billion in sales. In 2013 that number nearly doubled, and Chinese shoppers had obliterated America's Cyber Monday spending records in just the first few hours of the sale. And it's only getting bigger.
(1).We can know that Singles' Day was first set __________.
A.by a large e-commerce company called Alibaba
B.for the young people who want to have fun together
C.to organize activities for singles to get rid of their loneliness
D.to express something against Valentine's Day
(2).Before 2009 on Singles' Day, single young people were most likely to __________.
A.just spend the day alone

A.By 2009, Singles' Day have already became a famous online-shopping day.
B.Cyber Monday in some western countries is to celebrate Singles' Day.
C.In 2013, Alibaba's marketplaces did about nearly $4 billion in sales.
D.Alibaba was the first major e-commerce company to offer a sale on Singles' Day.
(4).According to the last two paragraphs, we can know that__________.
A.Alibaba played an important part in the new definition of Singles' Day
B.other Chinese e-commerce company like JD followed Cyber Monday
C.Alibaba offered more brands and deeper discounts to make it bigger
D.Alibaba, Taobao,T-mall and JD are different e-commerce companies
(5).What is the passage mainly about?
A.The origin of Singles' Day.
B.The life of modern young single people.
C.The e-commerce company Alibaba.
D.How Singles' Day become a shopping day.

【題目】Elephants in Uganda are starting to come close to villages near national parks. The big animals are a real danger to people.
So, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has been giving people new tools to keep the elephants away: vuvuzelas. They are plastic instruments some fans use at sports events.
The instruments make a loud sound elephants do not like. The animals leave, and no one is harmed. A spokesperson for the Uganda Wildlife Authority says vuvuzelas work because they do not threaten the elephants. That is important because an elephant that feels threatened is more likely to attack. So far, no one has reported an elephant attacking in answer to a vuvuzela.
Officials and villagers have tried other ways to stop elephants from coming near farms and houses. They have built beehives – houses for flying insects that sting. They have hung ropes covered in spicy oil. They have dug long, deep holes. And they have used guns, called A-K47s.
An official from the Uganda Wildlife Authority explains that people shoot the gun in the air to scare the elephant. But over time, the elephants have stopped being afraid of the sound of the gun. They only look at the shooter and wave their ears.
Another official for the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Gessa Simblicious, says one elephant-prevention solution will not work everywhere in Uganda. And one day, elephants may accept the vuvuzela noise, just as they do the sound of the A-K47.
But right now, vuvuzelas are an effective, non-violent and fun way to deal with a serious problem.

【題目】Cleaning your plate may not help feed hungry children today, but the timeworn advice of mothers everywhere may help reduce food waste from the farm to the fork, help the environment and make it easier to feed the world’s growing population.
Hard data still being collected, but experts in Chicago said about 30% to 50% of the food produced in the world goes uneaten. The average American throws away 33 pounds of food each month—about $40 worth, which means each person throws away almost 400 pounds of food. The US Department of Agriculture says that 23% of eggs and an even higher percentage of produce ends up in the trash.
“We forget we have all these fresh fruits and vegetables, and at the end of the week we have to throw them away”, said Esther Gove, a mother of three young children in South Berwick, Maine. “Now, I don’t buy as much fresh produce as I used to.”
But the effect of food waste arrives far beyond the kitchen. Agriculture is the world’s largest user of water, a big consumer of energy and major emitter of greenhouse gases during production. Experts say reducing waste is a simple way to cut stress on the environment and can ease pressure on farmers, who will be called on to feed an expected 9 billion people around the world in 2050, compared with nearly 7 billion today.
No matter how sustainable (可持續(xù)的) farming is, if the food’s not getting eaten, it’s not sustainable and it’s not a good use of our resources. In richer nations, fruit and vegetables end up in the trash because they aren’t pretty enough to meet companies’ standards, have gone bad in a home refrigerator or aren’t eaten at a restaurant. In developing countries, much food spoils before it gets to market due to poor roads and lack of refrigeration. High food prices are another reason, since some people can’t afford the food that’s produced.
【1】From the first paragraph, we know that cleaning your plate ________.
A. is you mother’s best advice for you
B. can solve certain problems for the world
C. can help feed hungry children all over the world
D. helps meet the growing population’s needs
【2】The underlined word “emitter” in Paragraph 4 means ________.
A. user B. finder C. protector D. producer
【3】What is a sustainable and convenient way for a customer in a restaurant?
A. Ordering enough and packing the leftovers.
B. Ordering more than he or she can eat.
C. Ordering less and feeling hungry after leaving.
D. Ordering more and leaving the untouched alone.
【4】Which of the following topics will follow the text?
A. More examples of food waste. B. Ways to reduce food waste.
C. Experts’ idea on the environment. D. Advice for food with high prices.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C或D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
Dear Lan Lan,
I'm now writing to you at Hartsop, a village in the Lake District, a place to have most beautiful scenery(景色)in English couple here to spend Christmas with them. This was planned for overseas students to know British way of life by living with British families.
We came two days before Christmas and during our stay, we have had everything we expected. Christmas turkey, Christmas cake, Christmas puddings, Christmas parties and Christmas gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing(有趣的), but above all these, we are deeply touched by the hospitality(好客)of the family, Roger and Anne Marie.
Anne Marie was a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing dishes and showing us around. Roger, who was a doctor, knows a lot about China and still wants to know more. He plays us Chinese music and it seems to me he does better in that than we do. In the evenings, we all sit around the fireplace with Tim, a lovely dog, by our side. Like long-time-no-see friends, we talk about all the things that have happened or we hope to happen in our lives. There is always so much to tell and to know.
After three months away from home, we are again feeling how sweet a home can be. Roger and Anne Marrie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring us a person-to-person feeling, instead of a British-to-Chinese feeling. They make us believe that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved.
How I wish Mum and Dad could meet them! How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you. We always talk about “when we go back home next year…” and soon we will turn this into “When we go back home THIS year…” for the New Year's Day is coming. Miss you.

【題目】More and more people, especially in developed countries, arc becoming older. In the United States there are currently over 40 million people aged 65 and over, more than 10 million are over 85. Caring for these senior citizens is becoming a necessity, and a big industry.
Traditionally, care for the elderly has taken place in an extended family, where grandparents live at home and are helped by other family members. However, as more and more young people enter the work force full time they cannot care for their parents or grandparents any more. There are more than 10,000 organizations that provide care for the elderly. More than 1,000 were founded last year alone. Ordinary people quit their jobs and start private care centers, where they offer senior citizens their services.
One of the most difficult aspects of such an organization is finding the right people to do the job. Caring for the elderly is not an easy task. It requires skill and patience. Among daily tasks are preparing meals, washing older people, or simply keeping them company. Many care workers quit because they find it very depressing(令人沮喪的). It is important to help the elderly stay mobile as long as possible. When they cannot walk or climb stairs they need more help: thus costs become higher. Care workers concentrate on exercises to help them stay mobile. In many cases assisted living replaces round-the-clock health care. Elderly people need help with some daily tasks but can mostly live on their own. It also costs less than full nursing care.
While wealthy Americans turn to private care centers, those who are poorer cannot pay for the services because Medicare does not cover it. Not all countries offer health care provided by the state. In Asia and Africa, for example, older people are cared for by family members.
【1】Why are more and more private care centers started?
A. Many people can't find other jobs. B. Caring for the elderly is an easy task.
C. Many young people take full time jobs. D. Care workers can get well paid.
【2】Who pays for the service in the care center?
A. Medicare. B. The state. C. The family. D. Care centers.
【3】What is the third paragraph in the text mainly about?
A. Reasons to start a care center. B. Skills that care workers need.
C. Costs for nursing care. D. Difficulties in running a care centre.
【4】How many daily tasks for nursing care are mentioned in the text?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

I once bought the beautiful bracelet from a store and felt excited when I tried it on. Sadly, I was soon disappointed at that my naughty kids broke it. But instead of just feel sad, I chose to repair it myself.
To my greatly surprise, it didn’t take a long time to do it. As time went by, I found that I was not happy with just repairing my breaking bracelets. I started making new bracelets out the materials from my old one. Later on, I begin to design on my own
Then I made my first deal. Back in 2013, I posted my bracelets on WeChat for the first time and several friends said that they wanted it. That was just the start. With much materials at hand, I made my designs into reality.
