Most men and women feel that a dinner bill should be split down the middle, how fair is this it really? A new app aims to answer this question, and for others who fall 1 to income inequality, by dividing the check-up according to each person's race and gender.

Equipay uses Bureau of Labor Statistics and math to calculate how much is2 from each person , but it will only give you statistics about the wage3.

'Equipay helps you avoid the firm discrimination that exists in our society. It doesn't work out an equal split of the bill but a 4one.' the company's site says. 'You pay what you should to balance out the wage diversity.' The app is the brain child of Luna Malbroux, a diversity educator and comedian from California, who wanted to 'make the touchy subject' of racial and gender inequalities more 5, The problem is expected to catch people’s eye easily.

“I hope that this, more than anything, starts a discussion and helps people to start thinking a little bit differently about how we can use technology and innovation to6 inequality and wage inequality, ” Malbroux said.

The app has a built in 'diversity tool' that allows you to7 how diverse your friends really are, the list also displays the level of diversity for each person.

Type in the amount of the entire bill at the top, tip included, and the software will begin calculating the split based on who your8 is. Finally it will show you the list again, but now with how much each person owes.

Before paying your share, there is the9 to protest, in which the app will ask 'what's your excuse' and lists reasons for you to choose from. You can say 'I was a middle child' or 'I'm unaware of my privilege'.Equipay will find the best reply possible, whether it is facts regarding income inequalities or something seemingly10 but also makes you think twice before disagreeing with what you have to pay.

【題目】 Graham Moore is the best-selling author of The Sherlockian and the screenwriter of The Imitation Game. His new book The Last Days of Night is out now. He is talking about some of his favorite books.

Murder in Three Acts

BY AGATHA CHRISTIE

My mother is a crime fiction(偵探小說)lover and, when I was having trouble learning to read, we’d sit in my bed at home in Chicago and take it in turns to read a paragraph. It was the first book I read cover-to-cover and I later became a writer because of that experience. Not only did it give me a love of crime fiction but, more importantly, it taught me that reading can be a shared experience.

Cryptonomicon

BY NEAL STEPHENSON

This book showed me that historical fiction need not be dry, but can be lively and enjoyable. Stephenson asks readers to take science seriously, but writes the story in a funny way. I’d long known of Alan Turing, but Stephenson’s technique (手法)of describing him was surprising; I saw how a writer can bring a real person to life for modern readers.

A Visit from the Goon Squad

BY JENNIFER EGAN

Egan uses a technique that I drew on when writing The Imitation Game. She tells stories from different voices and times, and uses many styles that say to readers, “I’ve done a lot of work, but now you have to join in and work it out for yourselves.”

With my latest book, my greatest hope is that readers will want to get other people discussing the book. I’ve just started the conversation.

1What influenced Moore to be a writer?

A.Reading crime fiction in secret.B.Having trouble learning to read.

C.Reading a book with his mother.D.Writing stories at a young age.

【題目】 What will the schools of the future look like? With the introduction of 5G technology, we’re starting to find out.

The answer is smart campuses, with high-tech features to help students learn more effectively and safely. They also bring convenience to teachers and administrators (管理者).

The University of British Columbia has what is believed to be Canada’s first 5G-powered smart campus, according to The Star newspaper. The school has partnered with tech company Rogers Communications to install (安裝) a massive 5G network on its campus. Researchers at the school can use the network to test real-time 5G applications, as well as access a data storage facility (設施) similar to “cloud” storage, the newspaper noted.

US tech company Amazon is also looking to get into the smart campus arena (舞臺). Alexa, the company’s voice-activated (聲控) smart assistant, is being aimed at teachers. They may help to run classes more efficiently, says Amazon. For example, if a teacher has to teach different classes in different rooms, Alexa can remember the teacher’s preferences, such as whether or not they need to use a projector (投影儀).

Smart technology can also be used to keep students and teachers safe. At the Global Indian International School in Singapore, CNET reports that facial recognition scanners (掃描器) allow teachers to automatically lock or unlock classroom doors, while students can store their textbooks in smart lockers linked to their student ID cards.

People often describe college campuses as “mini-cities”. After all, they have their own on-campus infrastructure (基礎設施), including transport links, roads, shops, restaurants – even police. And just like the smart cities being designed around the world, many college campuses are adopting smart technology. The University of Michigan in the US, for example, has its own self-driving shuttle (班車) system, allowing students to go from classroom to classroom in a safe and efficient manner.

Unlike cities, universities are seen as a particularly good testing ground for smart technology because many of them have sole (單一的) control over their property (財產(chǎn)). “Cities are so big, and there are so many players and stakeholders (利益相關者), it can be difficult. But many universities around the world have control over their estates (房產(chǎn)). They own all their buildings ... so they can become like a living lab,” said Gemmy Ginty, a designer working on a smart campus development strategy for the University of Glasgow, UK, in a news report by the Guardian.

1How is the text mainly developed?

A.By giving examples.B.By making comparisons.

C.By following the order of time.D.By explaining causes and effects.

2What can we learn about Alexa from the text?

A.It offers free “cloud” storage to its users.

B.It is used to test real-time 5G applications.

C.It can help improve classroom efficiency.

D.It can help monitor students’ class performances.

3Why are universities seen as a good testing grounds for smart technology, according to the text?

A.Smart technology benefits students the most.

B.Universities are full of laboratories and researchers.

C.Sole control over their properties makes it easier to test new tech.

D.There are many players and stakeholders on university campuses.
