Once a man asked a painter to painting a picture for him. He told the artist he didn’t want to any shadows in the picture, just sunshine, but the artist did so. When the man saw the finished picture, he was disappointing. Without shadows, everything in the picture looks flat and unreal.

The point of the story is that we need both shadows and sunshine to have a completely picture, just as we need both rain and sun to have living world. People, too, needs both sadness and happiness. We often learn important lesson during sad times. So when we feel sad, we should try to stop and think about that we might learn from the experience.

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探討它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,  public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看見的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

1.Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

A. Quite a lot and quite a few. B. Overlook and oversee.

C. A wise man and a wise guy. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.

2.The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably means “_____”.

A. blow B. roll up

C. get hurt D. finish

3.Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ____.

A. clever B. crazy

C. lazy D. dull

In Britain, many theatres put on shows for children at Christmas and many theatres have a theatre-in-education team working there. This team, made up of actors and teachers, writes plays for children, usually performing them in schools. They do different plays for different age groups and the children often take part in the play in some way.

Pantomime is a special kind of Christmas show for children. It is loved by people and also allows the audience (觀眾) to join in. “Pantomime” was the name of the Roman actor who performed shows without speaking — this is where the English word “mime” comes from.

A pantomime is always based on a well-known children's story. But there are always certain types of characters in the show and certain situations and events. For example, a pantomime must always include a hero, known as the “principal boy” and this principal boy is always played by a pretty girl wearing a short costume (服裝). Then there is the comic older woman, known as the “dame” who is played by a man. There is always a group of men and women who sing and dance and often there is a pantomime horse. The horse is played by two men who form the “front” and “back” ends inside a “horse” costume. It is funny and it usually kicks the dame when she isn't looking.

Members of the audience have to shout a warning to one of the characters and argue with the character (usually the dame) when she does not believe them. When she shouts, “Oh no, it isn't,” the audience always responds with “Oh yes, it is!” The audience also learns and sings a simple song and a few children are sometimes invited to help one of the characters during the show.

1.The theatre-in-education teams _____.

A. are made up of famous local actors

B. write plays for the same age group

C. often give plays in their own theatres

D. usually allow children to join in a play

2.According to the text, a pantomime _____.

A. is designed to make people laugh

B. is made up of three characters

C. is especially popular with grown-ups

D. can be watched all year round in Britain

3.When the dame says, “Yes, it is”, the audience should _____.

A. follow her and sing

B. stand up and dance

C. repeat what she says

D. disagree with her loudly

Popeye the Sailor first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s.The sailor in that cartoon ate lots of spinach(菠菜) to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33 percent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people’s diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable.

Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not true. Spinach does not have any more iron than any other green vegetable.

People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.

Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach cannot make a difference in how strong a person is. However, spinach does have something else which the body needs—folic acid.

It is interesting to point out that folic acid can help make a person strong. Maybe it was really the folic acid that made Popeye strong all along.

1.A good title for this reading passage is______.

A. The Truth about Spinach B. Popeye the Sailor

C. A Mistake with Numbers D. Folic Acid Makes You Strong

2.Why did many people eat spinach after they saw Popeye the Sailor?

A. They thought Popeye was funny.

B. They thought spinach made them strong.

C. Spinach had a lot of iron.

D. People liked folic acid.

3.A research group told people that spinach______.

A. made Popeye strong

B. was a green vegetable

C. had more iron than other green vegetables

D. had less iron than other green vegetables

4.The reading passage says that perhaps Popeye got his strength from______.

The Netherlands on Monday launched its first-ever “intelligent bicycle”, fitted with a set of electronic devices (設備) to help bring down the high accident rate among elderly cyclists in this country.

The intelligent bicycle runs on electricity. Its seat shakes when other cyclists approach from behind, while the handlebars do the same when obstacles appear ahead to inform cyclists to pay attention to the danger. It also has a cradle (置物架) in which a computer can be inserted (插入), to wirelessly connect and “talk” to the bicycle through a particular application. The computer also flashes a bright signal if there is an approaching obstacle in the bicycle’s path, like a tree, or if another cyclist comes up from behind intending to pass.

A commercial-available bicycle is expected to be on the market in the next two years and should sell for between 1, 700 euros to 3, 200 euros per bicycle. It weighs about 55 pounds but researchers are working on making the on-board systems smaller.

‘‘Accidents often happen when cyclists look behind them or get frightened when they are passed at high speed,” said Maurice Kwakkernaat, one of the scientists involved in the project, “The on-board system technology has already been at work in the automotive (自動的) industry”.

“More and more elderly people are using a bicycle, not only for short distances, but also for longer distances,” Dutch Environment Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen said, “This type of bicycle is truly needed in the Netherlands because it will help us bring down the number of elderly people who are injured every year and allow them to continue enjoying cycling,” she said.

1.What does the text mainly talk about?

A. The newly-invented bicycle can warn of danger.

B. The intelligent computer runs on electricity.

C. More elderly people enjoy electronic devices.

D. The means of transportation in the Netherlands.

2.When a car appears ahead, the intelligent bicycle will_________.

A. stop by itself B. make a noise

C. warn its cyclist D. change its color

3.What do you know about the intelligent bicycle?

C. It will be lighter in weight. D. It will be free for everyone.
