4.Secret Santas
On Christmas morning,Linda wakes up,and tries to imagine the wide-eyed surprise of children in another household as they unwrap the presents she carefully chose for them.Linda has never met the children,but that's all part of the joy of giving as secret Santas,she says.
"It's an amazing feeling to buy gifts on an anonymous (匿名的) basis,"says Linda."It brings a whole new meaning to the holidays."
Linda and Tony are an American couple living in Toronto,Canada,and Linda did charitable work as a member of the American Women's Club of Toronto.As the name suggests,members are U.S.citizens living in Toronto,who join together for fellowship and community service.
To find her"adopted"family,Linda goes to the local schools and requests a wish list for a family that's struggling to survive.Last year she helped a single mother with three children.The mother works as a cleaning lady in a nursing home.
"The list is always heartbreaking.They have an opportunity to ask for anything and do just the opposite,asking for basic clothes or simple toys,"she says."We always buy the kids a new winter coat,hats,and gloves."She also buys gifts for the parents.
Last year Linda asked the mother for a second wish list--one that didn't include the basics."Every child should have a Christmas that sticks with them for a lifetime."She purchased iPods for the two older children and a video game system for the youngest."I have learned a very valuable lesson in all of this,"says Linda."Pay attention to what's going on in your own backyard--no matter where you live."
The joy of giving as secret Santas is much sweeter when the gift is anonymous.

9.It's going to be a chaotic(混亂的)day. How do I know? It's Monday.OK,joking.But,I do predict that today will be filled with the normal last-minute tasks, fire drills, and unforeseen events. So,how do you keep yourself from being swept away in the stream of chaos? How do you remain calm while others are rushing and panicking? There is a problem…Panic! When things don't go as planned, how do you react? Are you the calm one who works to fix things?Or the one running around like Chicken Little screaming that the sky falling?Getting upset or alarmed can seem like natural reactions to a problem.
Here are a few tips to help you remain calm in the face of the storm:
●Don't Panic   You are better able to find a solution if you aren't panicking. If you can keep your head when others are losing theirs, you will be able to make a clear decision in the chaos.
●There Aren't Many True Emergencies   My time as a Naval Officer taught me about true emergencies. In the military, when there is a problem, people can get hurt or die. This is not usually the case when the office copier or email server goes down.Keep things in perspective. There are very few true emergencies in life.
●Avoid the"Fight or Flight"When you are stressed, your body will want to go into"fight or flight."Your body was designed to keep you safe from danger, but its natural reflexes aren't always the best solution against a project gone away.Keep your emotions in check and ensure that your physical reflexes don't make bad decisions for you.
●Head Into The Problem   While everyone else is running away, true leaders walk into a problem.Sticking your head in the sand only makes things worse.Instead of trying to ignore the situation, get to the heart of the issue as soon as possible.Only then can you address it.
How Will You React? When you find yourself ready to lose it,take a step back.Ask,"Is this truly an emergency?"Keep your head when others are losing theirs. And you'll find that you are that much closer to a solution.

16.I often teach about happiness and what has become clear is this:There are some qualities always unhappy people have.Here are some of them.
Happy people know life can be hard and tend to live through hard times.They take responsibility for how they got themselves into a mess,and focus on getting themselves out of it as soon as possible.Unhappy people see themselves as victims of life and stay stuck in the"look what happened to me"attitude instead of finding a way through and out to the other side.
Most happy people believe in the good in people instead of thinking everyone is out to get them.Generally open and friendly towards people they meet,happy people foster(培養(yǎng))a sense of community around themselves and meet new people with all open heart.Unhappy people are distrustful of most people they meet and don't think strangers can be trusted.Unfortunately,this behavior slowly closes all chances of meeting new friends.
Unhappy people believe someone else's good fortune steals from their own.They believe there's not enough goodness to go around and always compare others'against theirs.This leads to jealousy(嫉妒).Happy people know that others'good luck and circumstance are just signs of what they also can achieve if they try hard enough.They believe in unlimited possibilities and don't get stuck in thinking one person's good fortune limits their possible outcome in life.
There's only so much space between the two ears.Unhappy people fill that space with constant worry and fear.Happy people experience fear and worry too,but make an important difference between feeling it and living with it.When fear or worry crosses a happy person's mind,they'11ask themselves if there's an action they can take to prevent their fear or worry from happening and they take it.If not,they realize they're spinning in fear and they lay it down.
32.Paragraph 2mainly shows that unhappy people tend toC.
A.focus on what they really want
B.get worried about what will happen
C.stay focused on the past misfortunes
D.find a way to live through hard times
33.According to paragraph 3and 4,unhappy peopleB.
A.1ike making some new friends
B.hate seeing others with good fortune
C.a(chǎn)re more likely to be cheated by strangers
D.believe they can get good luck by working hard
34.What is imphed about happy people?C
A.They don't think life is hard.
B.They hardly ever fear anything.
C.They try to get out of their fear or worries.
D.They don't believe in every people they meet.
35.How is the text mainly developed?A
A.By making comparisons.
B.By giving examples.
C.By showing detailed data.
D.By proving some theories.

13.While some dictionaries define the word"right"as"a privilege"when used in the context of"human rights",we are talking about something more basic.Originally, people had rights only because of their membership in a group, such as a family. Then,in 539 BC,Cyrus the Great, after conquering the city of Babylon, did something totally unexpected-he set all slaves free and let them return home. Moreover,he declared people should choose their own religion.Cyrus'statements are about the first"human rights"declaration in history.
Every person has certain basic rights, simply by the fact of being human. These are called"human rights"rather than a privilege, which can be taken away at someone's sudden desire. They are"rights"because they are things you are allowed to be,to do or to have. These rights are there for your protection against people who might want to harm or hurt you. They are also there to help us get along with each other and live in peace.
Yet many people, when asked to name their rights, will list only freedom of speech and belief and perhaps one or two others. There is no question that these are important rights, but the full scope of human rights is very broad. They mean choice and opportunity. They mean the freedom to get a job, adopt a career, select a partner of one's choice and raise children. They include the right to travel widely and the right to work without trouble, abuse and threat of arbitrary (霸道) dismissal. They even embrace the right to leisure.
In ages past, there were no human rights. Then the idea turned up that people should have certain freedoms. And that idea, following World War II,resulted finally in the document called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the thirty rights to which all people are entitled.
