13.Last night,I had a dream about Sherlock Holmes.I dreamed that someone was sending strange pictures to my phone.I grew scared and called my friend:Sherlock.He agreed to take the case, but when I called him again, his number was no longer in service. My wild imagination aside,I think my dream reflects the attractiveness of Sherlock Holmes. To put it quite simply,I am one of many crazy number of Sherlock
fans. So why has Sherlock, one of the best fictional characters ever created in literature, been popular for a century?Just like a real detective,I have come up with a number of theories.
Firstly,Sherlock is smart.Just plain smart.Benedict Cumberbatch,the actor who plays Sherlock in the television series, brilliantly flies through those complicated explanations, never failing to impress the audience.I think most people enjoyed being shocked by Sherlock's impossible degree of intelligence that none of us can ever imagine possessing; in a way,it's almost a magical quality itself.I have yet to find a
modern-day Sherlock.
Secondly, there's something a little off about Sherlock.People have suggested that he has a mild case of autism, which explains his coldness and sometimes rudeness to others.In my opinion,he just doesn't care.If his analyses embarrass you,then so be it.
His mental capacity (容量) is large,but he refuses to fill it with anything useless.Although we would never want to be embarrassed by Sherlock in real life,we can'thelp but be entertained when he does it to other people.
Lastly, the very concept of mystery itself draws people in.Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, never offers enough clues(線索) for the reader to solve the mystery himself, but offers enough to make the reader guess.Obviously, the mystery is Sherlock. If the reader was smart enough to solve the mystery,Sherlock's talent would immediately be destroyed. That's why John Watson, who is smarter than most common people, will always remain Sherlock's bumbling(笨手笨腳的) companion.
So,students,kids,everyone-pick up a Sherlock Holmes book or get to know him on screen.I promise you, involving yourself in Sherlock's world will never fail to impress.

B.a(chǎn)lways dreams about Sherlock

8.During the past Spring Festival, many children may have received red packets from their families. But Xing Pu,a 40-year-old economist,is asking the government to give red packets to every Chinese citizen.
Xing suggested the government give out 1,000 yuan to each Chinese since the government income has increased rapidly in recent years. He said his suggestion would allow everyone to directly enjoy the fruits of the country's economic success, help the lower-income groups deal with rising prices and increase consumption(消費(fèi))around the country.
Recent years have seen the government carry out a series of pro-poor (扶貧) and pro-rural(惠農(nóng))policies,including increasing spending on public health care and calling off the agricultural tax.But the lower-income group still needs more help while being hit hard by an 11-year high in prices and recent snowstorms.
Xing said while making the draft,he has borrowed many ideas from practices in countries like the United States and Singapore.Earlier this year, the governments of the two nations offered cash handouts(救濟(jì))to their citizens as the result of a surplus in government income. As for in China,"We can even encourage the rich to donate their 1,000 yuan red packet to the poor,"said Xing.
Although Xing's suggestion has gained wide support among ordinary Chinese on the Internet, many other economists criticized it as unpractical.Even Xing himself admitted he made the suggestion without any careful calculation. But they agreed with Xing's point that the growing economic pie should be shared among the people.
"To better use the increase of money, handing out money is not a solution that holds good for all time.It could be better to improve the public service or cut the price of energy use in daily life,"said Qiao Xinsheng,an economic professor.

D.Cutting the price of energy use in daily life.

3.We went to the B.T Blackstone Library,not far from Lake Michigan,once a week.You could easily miss the building if you didn't know what you were looking for.But once you were inside,you could never mistake it for anything else.We passed through  two sets of heavy brass doorsto the lobby of the library. And if we turned right then,we could see an alcove with tables; this led,in turn,to a big reading room with a great and ancient globe that sat in front of the largest windows.At some time during every visit I found my way into that room to touch the globe.I liked to look at Africa,with the coded colors of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia,and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights.I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle,arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show.
On Saturday,as I wandered through the young adult section.I saw a title:Little Women,by Louisa May Alcott.I could tell from looking at the shelf that she'd written a lot of books,but I didn't know anything about her.I had learned from experience that titles weren't everything.A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home,and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in a week.So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs:
"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents"grumbled Jo,lying on the rug.
"It's so dreadful to be poor"sighed Med,looking down at her old dress.
"I don't think it's fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all"added little Amy,with an injured sniff.
"We have got Father and Mother and each other."said Beth contentedly from her corner.
It was a thing I had decided on some other books to take home,because I didn't look through the rest of the section that day.I read and read and read Little Women it was time to walk home,and expect for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating,I wouldn't put it down until the end.Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in girls who could almost be like me,especially Jo.It seemed to me a shame that she wasn't Black:then our similarity would be complete.She loved to read,she loved to make up plays,she hated acting ladylike,she had a dreadful temper.I had found a kindred spirit.
