A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offer?ing each of some four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.
By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened. A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and de?pendable. The children who gave in to temptation early were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible(頑固的).
Actually , the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotion?al intelligence which doesn't show up on an IQ test.
The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists' concerns. But brain theory can't explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink, a less resistant soul.
Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence : when it comes to predicting people's success, brain ability as measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as "character".
EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together; how one's ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use. Among the ele?ments for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20 % ; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.
While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.

D. There is no link between EQ and IQ.

B [2015 .山東威海一中高三模擬] Coral reefs(珊潮ft) are not just beautiful to look at,but also very useful. They shelter nearly 25 % of ocean life and provide food for billions of people. However, like many other species, this amazing ecosystem(生態(tài)系統(tǒng))is in danger of dy?ing out !
There are two main reasons for the destruction—the ris?ing carbon dioxide levels caused by global warming as well as human influences like bottom operation. While not much can be done about the former, the loss caused by the latter can be reduced.
Bottom operation involves dropping nets to the ocean bed and then dragging them up when filled with fish. This action damages the ocean floor, causing the coral branches to sepa?rate from the reefs. While that is very discouraging, the good news is that if these branches are found quickly, they can be saved. At present, that work is being performed by volunteer divers. But the method has only limited success because they cannot stay long underwater, nor reach depths of over 200 metres where some of the deep-sea coral grows.
However, this is not the case for coralbots―the robots that can constantly seek out broken branches. A team of 'cor-albots', each individually working to simple rules will piece together damaged bits of coral, allowing them to regrow. They are programmed to be able to distinguish between other things and the coral. The robots work together in groups, sim?ilar to bees. If one coralbot is damaged then the others will still be able to complete the task.
Dr Lea-Anne Henry said,"The project of using coralbots offers us the possibility to restore (修復(fù))the function of reefs. It is in the final stage of testing. Once ready? the re?searchers hope to build hundreds of them and use them effec?tively in the waters off Scotland and then hopefully in the o-ceans across the world."
5. Which of the following is a cause of the clanger that coral reefs are facing?
A. The appearance of new creatures.
B. The seriously polluted sea water.
C. The activities of volunteer clivers.
D. Human activities like bottom operation.
6. Compared with volunteer divers,coralbots__________ .
A. can stay longer underwater
B. must work as bees do
C. can distinguish what is coral
D. can never be damaged
7. What does the underlined word "them" in the last para?graph refer to?
A. Coralbots. B. Broken branches.
C. Working bees. D. Bits of coral.
8. We can infer from the passage that ____________ ,
A. bottom operation has affected most underwater crea?tures
B. broken branches of coral can regrow if saved in time
C. hundreds of the coralbots have worked well in the oceans
D. with the coralbots all damaged coral reefs can be re?stored

As I grew older, my dad and I grew further apart. We al?ways had totally different opinions. He thought that college was a waste of time, but for me it was important to finish col?lege. He wanted me to work my way to the top as he had done in his field, but I wanted a different life. There was a time when we did not talk with each other.
A few months ago, I heard that my 84-year-old dad was in poor health. When he called and asked whether I could move from Colorado back to Tennessee to help him, I knew he was seriously ill. I am his only child and so it was time to meet my father's requirement.
Two weeks after moving back, we bought a boat and started fishing again. Fishing was one of the few things that we did while I was young and that we both enjoyed. It is strange but true that as we are fishing we are able to put things that have kept us apart for so many years behind us. We are able to talk about things that we have never talked about before. Fishing has been healing the old wounds that have kept us apart.
It is not important how many fish we catch. It is about enjoying the relationship that we have not had for years. I' m 62 and he is 84. When we are on the lake fishing, it is like two kids enjoying life. It is far better to find a way to put the un?happy past behind. No joke: researchers say we are moving away from per?sonal ? real-world pranks and into a world of media-driven jokes and Internet boredom. Does this spell the end of April Fools' Day as we know it?
Though pranksters (惡作劇的人)and joke-lovers in many countries now gleefully prepare to trick friends and loved ones on April Fool's Day, no one knows exactly when or why, or even where, this tradition began.
The importance of this day of prank-pulling freedom is no laughing matter. It's integral (完整的)to American cul?ture. A day of funny is important to society, and also helps humans bond. Researchers say our reaction on comedy is changing, though. And that may mean fewer pranks in the future.
"The usual pranks that we would see 50 years ago are much less common," Gary Alan Fine, a sociologist at North?western University in Illinois, told LiveScience. "I think we are seeing the decline of interpersonal pranks.,,
"At one time, pranking played a bigger role in American society. Some of the pranking was also very harmful," Jo?seph Bo skin, a professor retired from history at Boston Uni?versity, told LiveScience.
This type of harmful prank-playing was usually directed towards marginalized(使邊緣化)sections of society. "Pranks have played a very big role in this situation, so I'm glad that the prankster part of it has declined, but the making fun of life in general goes on," Boskin said.
"The big problem is knowing where to draw the line be?tween playful pranks and meanness close to bullying," Fine said.
"Practical jokes of a certain sort shade into bullying, they shade into meanness and we are very concerned as a soci?ety about meanness," Fine said. "Finding out what that point is, is difficult for a society. And traditional pranking may be left out in the cold," Fine said.
5. Who will be made fun of on April Fool's Day?
A. Strangers.
B. Friends and loved ones.
C. Old men.
D. Neighbours.
6. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Serious affairs.
B. Boring things.

B. No one knows exactly where the tradition of April Fool's Day began.
C. Pranksters and joke-lovers usually trick friends on April Fool's Day.
D. There'll be more pranks in the future.
8.What's Boskin's attitude towards the decline of pranks?
