On the Way to School

On the Way to School

Recently, on my way to school, I have thought a great deal about the idea that “civilization starts from me”. We all want to live in a society in which people follow rules and norms, but we can’t change other people --- we can only change ourselves.

On my way to school, I leave my home, walk down my street, cross at the crossing and wait for the bus. This process provides plenty of opportunities to act in a civilized way. For instance, I walk in an orderly manner along the sidewalk and I do not throw any trash onto the ground. These are good manners no matter where I’m walking. Then, when I get to the crossing, I wait until the intersection is clear and the traffic light has changed before I cross the street. These are the traffic laws, so I know that I should observe them. When waiting for the bus, I do not cut anyone else in line, On the bus, I take a seat politely and do not bother any other passengers.

Civilization clearly starts from me --- I can’t control others or perfectly understand their reasons for disobeying manners. But I am proud to follow the famous motto of Gandhi: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Driving to a friend’s house on a recent evening, I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above my friend’s roof-tops. I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it was that most city dwellers, myself included, usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors.

My friend had also seen it. He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him then. It had touched much of his life.

I know the feeling. Last December I took my seven-year-old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. We stayed in a forest rest-house with no electricity or running hot water. Our group had campfires outside every night, and indoors when it was too cold outside. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip. Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known, a bottomless well of silence. And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.

Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fibre-glass. We have televisions, cell phones, papers, electricity, heaters and ovens and air-conditioners, cars, computers.

Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of which was spent indoors, I thought that before long I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains, and perhaps write, but not in anger. I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cold silent night and touch the moon.

A. No modern equipment

B. Complete silence.

4.Modern things (Paragragh 4) are mentioned mainly to ___________

A. show that the writer likes city life very much

B. tell us that people greatly benefit from modern life

C. explain that people have less chances to enjoy nature

D. show that we can also enjoy nature at home through them

5.The author wrote the passage to ___________.

A. express the feeling of returning to nature

B. show the love for the moonlight

C. advise modern people to learn to live

D. want to communicate longing for modern life

There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages.

On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, "If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages."

The sailors had heard about the captain's cheating, so they didn't trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.

"But it's half a mile away!" said the sailor.

"A fire's fire," answered the captain. "I have won."

The sailor came out of the water, and said, "Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can't cook a chicken."

"I can," answered the captain.

"If you cook this chicken," said the sailor, "I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can't, you will give me your ship."

The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, "Where's the fire?"

"There it is," answered the sailor. "On the shore."
