【題目】On a cold winter day, many years ago, a French art teacher named Pierre Chevalier got on a train in Lyon to go to Paris. When he started his journey, he didn’t know that it was the beginning of almost 40 years of accidents and near death experiences.
During the journey, the train fell into an icy river, killing 12 passengers. Chevalier managed to swim back to the river bank. He only had a broken leg.
Two years later, Chevalier was on a plane from Paris to Moscow when a door suddenly opened and he fell out. A few minutes later, the plane crashed(墜毀); 27 people were killed. Chevalier was so lucky that he landed in a haystack(干草堆).
A few years later, he was hit by a bus, but again had no serious injuries. Then a year after that, he was driving on a mountain road when he saw a truck coming straight at him. He drove the car off the road, jumped out, landed in a tree—and watched his car fall 100 metres down the mountain.
“There are two ways you can look at it,” Chevalier said. “I’m either the world’s unluckiest man, or the world’s luckiest.” When a reporter asked Chevalier what he thought, he chose the “l(fā)uckiest” one.
Two years ago, aged 71, Chevalier bought his first lottery ticket(彩票) in 50 years and won more than 2 million.
After this, a TV company in America said they wanted him to make an advertisement. At first he accepted, but then he changed his mind. Chevalier said he wouldn’t fly to Los Angeles for the filming, because he didn’t want to push his luck. Who knows? If he had accepted the invitation, maybe he would have had another accident. But Mr Chevalier is a lucky man. If he’d had another accident, he probably would have survived that too!
【1】In the train accident many years ago, Chevalier ________.
A. didn’t get injured at all
B. was lucky enough to be alive
C. was finally pulled out of the river
D. was the only passenger to survive
【2】Why did Chevalier refuse to make the advertisement?
A. Because he had won 2 million.
B. Because he didn’t want to leave home.
C. Because he didn’t want to risk his life.
D. Because he didn’t like the TV company.
【3】The text mainly talks about ________.
A. a man with nine lives
B. the unluckiest man in the world
C. a man who traveled around the world
D. a man who earned 2 million in a lottery

【題目】China is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil-shortages, car makers have announced their plans to develop hybrid(混合燃料)cars for the Chinese market.Toyota’s hybrid car Prius will be ready to drive in China this week.Let’s have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a hybrid car when it combines two or more sources of power.Hybrid cars have special engines, which are smaller than traditional gasoline engine. They run at 99 percent of their power when the car is going at a steady speed. A specially designed battery motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra speed-up is needed.
Step into a Prius, and turn on the engine. The first thing you notice is how much quieter it is than a traditional car.At this point, the car’s gasoline engine is at rest. The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24 kilometers per hour.If you stay at a low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no waste gas gives off.
The computer makes the decision about when to use a gas engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two.If you go over 24 kilometers per hour, when you step on the gas, you are actually telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electronic motor recharges automatically using a set of batteries. When driving at a high speed, the gasoline engine not only powers the car, but also charges the batteries.
Any time you use the brake, the electric motor will work like a generator(發(fā)電機)and produce electricity to recharge the batteries. As a result, the car’s batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.
【1】Which of the following pictures can show how the power system of Prius works correctly?(W—Wheel of the car, E.M—electric motor, G.E—gasoline engine, C—computer, B—batteries)
A.
B.
C.
D.
【2】What is the most important characteristic of hybrid cars?
A. They are powered by both a rechargeable battery and gasoline.
B. They have smaller engines than traditional gasoline ones.
C. They use only 99 percent of their power to run up hills.
D. They are much quieter than traditional cars.
【3】We can know from the report that ___________.
A. the batteries can be recharged at any time you want
B. using the brake suggests that the gasoline engine should work
C. the gasoline engine charges the batteries as well as powering the car
D. the car’s batteries will last for around 200,000 miles without being recharged
【4】The author writes this passage mainly to ___________.

【題目】In 1940 the German army entered the Netherlands, beginning an occupation that lasted five years. Members of the Dutch royal family(荷蘭皇室) were forced to go to the United Kingdom to avoid being caught. However, the threat of German bombing attacks meant that England was not completely safe. For this reason Princess Juliana and her daughters, Princesses Beatrix and Irene, moved to Canada and settled in Ottawa. In January 1943 Juliana gave birth to a third daughter, Princess Margriet Francisca. The Government of Canada temporarily declared her place of birth as outside of Canadian land, meaning Margriet could hold Dutch citizenship and therefore still be qualified for the Dutch throne.
In 1945, the Dutch royal family returned home. Shortly after her return, Princess Juliana presented 100,000 tulip bulbs to Canada in appreciation of the important role played by Canadian troops in liberating the Netherlands and for providing her family with a safe place during the war. The following year she sent 20,500 tulip bulbs. Juliana continued to send thousands of bulbs as a yearly gift, a tradition that continued after she became queen in 1948. The gift of tulips is an ongoing tradition, and each year the people of the Netherlands and the Dutch royal family each send 10,000 bulbs to Canada in recognition of the close ties between the two countries. The gift of bulbs and the tulip flowers attracted interest and visitors in Ottawa. In 1952 Karsh, an Armenian-born photographer, suggested the idea of a tulip festival to the Ottawa Board of Trade. The first Canadian Tulip Festival took place in 1953. The first festival proved popular, and it became a yearly event. To mark the festival’s 50th anniversary in 2002, Canada Post issued a series of commemorative stamps(紀念郵票) and plates featuring the flowers and Princess Margriet returned to visit Ottawa. In the following years the festival began to focus more on international friendship and the festival’s historical origins. Now it is one of the world’s largest tulip shows.

【題目】
From gobbling(狼吞虎咽) down turkey to spending time with family to watching football, Thanksgiving is filled with traditions. But one of the most popular-pulling the wishbone—dates back centuries.
The upside-down VT shaped bone is actually called the furcula. It is a bone located between a turkey’s neck and its breast Furcula means “l(fā)ittle fork” in Latin. All birds have a wishbone.
At Thanksgiving, the tradition is for two people to hold one end of the bone, make a wish, and then tug(用力拉). The winner is the person who ends up with the bigger piece. If you believe the legend, the winner's wish will come true.
The practice of making a wish on a bird’s furcula dates back to the ancient Etruscans, a people who lived in what is today northern Italy. They believed birds were powerful and divine (非凡的) creatures. After killing a chicken, an Etruscan would leave the wishbone in the sun to dry. Passersby would pick it up, stroke it for good luck, and make a wish — That is how the furcula got the name “wishbone.”
The Etruscans passed the ritua (儀式)along to the Romans. Soon, the practice of making a wish on a chicken's furcula became popular in ancient Rome. According to legend,it was so widespread that there weren't enough chickens or wishbones to go around. So the Romans began breaking the wishbone in two. Now, twice as many people could make wishes.
Then the English picked up the tradition. In the 16th century, English settlers brought the practice to the New World there, they found an abundance of wild turkeys. Last summer, I went to work as a volunteer teacher in a small village, that is located in the south of our country. The children there were all from poor families, but they didn't have nice clothes to wear or food eat. They had to do much housework as our parents had gone to work in cities to make money. They had to take care for their little brothers or sisters. They live a hard life. But they were eager to learn less about the outside world. When asking about their dreams, they gave me the same answer. They said they hoped they could return to their small villages after graduating from college to make their hometown the more beautiful.
