6.Happiness is in your genes,it seems,according to a research that shows the more
people in a country who have a particular gene, the happier the nation will be.The FAAH gene, the DNA in question, makes a protein that affects feelings of pleasure and pain.
People with a particular version of it tend to be cheerier souls.
The researchers believe that the finding can help explain why some of the world's
poorest nations are also the happiest. The team from Bulgaria looked at whether there was a connection between the level of the FAAH gene in a population and the number of people who said they were very happy in the global study of life satisfaction.Sweden, one of the happiest countries in Europe and in the world,has lots of happy DNA.Some 26.3per cent of Swedes have the happiness gene,compared t0 23per cent of the British,21per cent of the French and 20per cent of Germans.The happiness gene is even rarer in southern Europe,where it is found in 18per cent of Greeks and just 12per cent of Italians. In contrast, the people in Iraq and Jordan are among the least likely to rate themselves as very happy and also have the lowest levels of the gene.
But the gene and optimism don-t always go hand in hand.For instance,Russians
score very low on happiness, despite having the right DNA,the Journal of Happiness
Studies reports.Climatic differences are also found to be closely associated with national differences in happiness.Study co-author Michael Minkov said,"We can notice the high occurrence of the gene in equatorial(赤道的) and tropical environments in South America and Africa, and the lower occurrence of it around the Mediterranean Sea than in Northern Europe."4'Genetics is not the only determining factor (因素)  of happiness,"A spokesman for the journal's publisher said,"The economic and political difficulties continuously experienced by Eastern European nations contribute to the very low happiness scores of Russians.Nations not blessed with the right DNA aren't necessarily miserable-happiness can still rise and fall for other reasons."

16.One often hears it said that travel broadens the mind. But does this always happen?
When an acquaintance of mine returned from France,I asked him how he liked it."The breakfasts were terrible."he said,"No bacon or kippers.I had fried eggs and chips, but it was quiet a business getting them to make them."Obviously travel had not broadened his mind.He had judged it entirely from his own English viewpoints.
All nationalities,in all foreign countries, can be found judging what they see, hear, taste and smell according to their own habits and customs.People who are better educated and who have read a lot about foreign countries tend to adapt and tolerate all easily. That is because their minds have already been broadened before they start travelling.
Physical differences are not so difficult to be adapted to as mental ones.In Indonesia, the left hand is considered unclean. When a foreigner offers or takes something with his left hand, the Indonesian may explain this action as arising from a difference in custom, but the deep prejudice against the use of the left hand will not be so easilydone away with.
There are some travelers who adapt themselves so successfully to foreign customs and habits that they get the severe criticisms of their more stubborn fellow-countrymen.If they are Asians, they are accused of having become"Westernized",and if they are Europeans, people say they have"gone native".
Perhaps the ideal would be if travel could succeed m making people tolerate the habits and customs of others without abandoning their own.The criterion for judging a foreigner could be"Does he try to be polite and considerate to others?"instead of"Is he like me?

17.Play is the basic business of childhood, and in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy (嬰兒),every child needs opportunity and right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. The main function of toys is to suggest, encourage and play.To succeed in this, they must be good toys, which children will play with often, and will come back again and again. Therefore,it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child's development.
In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities,is largely determined in the first three years of his life.So a baby's ability to benefit from the right play materials should not be underestimated.A baby who is encouraged, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully.
In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds.Every type of suitable toys should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability:Bricks and jigsaws and construction toys; painting, scribbling and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play-the first social games for learning to play and get on with others.
But at the third stage of play development-from five to seven or eight years old-the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning,at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the child most enjoys.
Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books become the main source of learning.Toys are still interesting and valuable, which lead up to new hobbies, but their significance has changed to a child of nine or ten years old, toys and games mean,as to adults, relaxation and fun.
49.According to the first passage we know that as a child grows upD.
A.he should be allowed to choose his own toys.
B.he should be given the same toys.
C.he should be given fewer and fewer toys.
D.he should be given different toys.
50.According to the passage, the abilities a child has inherited from his parentsC.
A.determine his character
B.will not change after the age of three.
C.partly determined the standard he is likely to reach
D.to a large extent determine the choice of toys
51.We learn from the passage that a child has boundless curiosityB.
A.when he is two
B.when he is around four
C.when he is six
D.when he is eight
52.The passage is mainly aboutA.
A.the role of play in a child's development
B.the importance of schooling

1.I looked at my beautiful Christmas tree and sighed.It was time.The New Year was a week old and my tree still stood in the corner of our room with its collection of memories proudly displayed in a shower of colorful lights.I'd procrastinated long enough.
I got up,went to the garage and dragged all the boxes into the room.I prepared the boxes,and carefully placed the decorations of the tree in their protective packaging,pausing every few minutes to admire a favorite."Hey,little Santa!"I held the Santa from my childhood."Thanks for being my friend for almost fifty years."He was a little ragged but still gives me a flood of wonderful memories."Until next year,my dear friend."
There was collection of handmade ones.My children made in their first years of school,more than twenty years ago.Made by tiny hands,they are far from perfect in design,but every year they go on my memory tree-memories of young giggles on Christmas morning and a smiling face when they handed them to me when I came home from work."Look what we made,Daddy!""Oh!It is beautiful.Let's find a special spot on the tree for it."Every year since,they are displayed.
A few hours after I started,the filled boxes were back in the garage.The room was vacuumed and I sat staring at a barren corner.The room seemed so empty.It took me two days of work to assemble and decorate my tree,but only a few hours to take it apart.
My tree is a good marriage or a great friendship.Like the tree,they take a long time to assemble and decorate with memories,but can be torn down quickly.All it takes is an unkind word or a thoughtless act,and what once stood proudly in the glow of love comes falling down.
Every,year I have to put my tree away,but not my marriage or friendships.I take great care of those.They get to glow in the corner of my life for as long as I live.I get to analyze my tree and find memories for a few weeks every year.I can do the same with the loves in my life every day.When I held the Santa,a flood of   wonderful memories returned.The same happens when I hold my wife or see the smile of a friend across the room.
Take great care of your friendships and your marriage.Once they come down,they aren't as easy to put back together as a Christmas tree,if at all.Stand them in that special spot in the corner of your heart and admire their glow.
