The extraordinary Eastgate Building in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, is said to be the only one in the world to use the same cooling and heating principles as the termite mound (白蟻堆).
Architect Mick Pearce used precisely the same strategy when designing the Eastgate Building, which has no air conditioning and almost no heating. The building is the country’s largest commercial and shopping complex but uses less than 10% of the energy of a conventional building of its size. The Eastgate’s owners saved 3.5 million on a 36 million building because air conditioning didn’t have to be equipped.
The complex is actually two buildings linked by bridges across a shady, glassroofed atrium (天井) open to the air. Fans suck fresh air in from the atrium, blow it upstairs through hollow spaces under the floors and from there into each office through vents (通風(fēng)口). As it rises and warms, it is drawn out via ceiling vents and finally exists through fortyeight brick chimneys.
During summer’s cool nights, big fans blow air through the building seven times an hour to cool the empty floors. By day, smaller fans blow two changes of air an hour through the building to circulate the air which has been in contact with the cool floors. For winter days, there are small heaters in the vents.
This is all possible only because Harare is 1,600 feet above sea level, and has cloudless skies, little dampness and rapid temperature swings-days as warm as 31 °C commonly drop to 14°C at night. “You couldn’t do this in New York, with its fantastically hot summers and fantastically cold winters,” Pearce said.
The engineering firm of Ove Arup & Partners monitors daily temperatures. It is found that the temperature of the building has generally stayed between 23 °C and 25 °C, with the exception of the annual hot period just before the summer rains in October and three days in November, when a doorkeeper accidentally switched off the fans at night. And the air is far fresher than in airconditioned buildings, where up to 30% of the air is recycled.
1.Why was Eastgate cheaper to be built than a conventional building?
A. It was designed in a smaller size.
B. No air conditioners were fixed in.
C. Its heating system was less advanced.
D. It used rather different building materials.
2.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. Fresh air from outside.
B. Heat in the building.
C. A hollow space.
D. A baseboard vent.
3.Why would a building like Eastgate not work efficiently in New York?
A. New York has less clear skies as Harare.
B. Its dampness affects the circulation of air.
C. New York covers a larger area than Harare.
D. Its temperature changes seasonally rather than daily.
4.The data in the last paragraph suggests Eastgate’s temperature control system .
A. allows a wide range of temperatures
B. functions well for most of the year
C. can recycle up to 30% of the air
D. works better in hot seasons

Conversation begins almost the moment we come into contact with another and continues throughout the day with the aid of cell phones and computers. However, we are so often absorbed in conversation that we lose sight of its true purpose and value.
One important aspect of a good conversation is the words used to express thoughts and feelings. We are full of deep thoughts and strong emotions, yet our vocabularies are not enough for this expression, and many make little effort to expand that. Perhaps you see a movie that touches you deeply, yet you have the following conversation: “So, what did you think of the film?” “Oh, my God, it was so sad. I swear, I went through using up a box of tissues. I was in tears.”This dialogue is hardly an effective way of expressing feelings. It gives no sign of how or why the movie truly affected you. Such commonly-used phrases are certainly not enough to describe a deeply moving experience. However, not only must you try to avoid overused words, you must also be careful in your selection. The purpose of expanding vocabulary is not to use the largest or most impressive words, but to find those best suited.
What is lacking in many conversations is the ability to talk to another rather than just talking with that person. A thoughtful person will find that even in the most ordinary of conversations, there are a thousand questions waiting to be asked if you have courage and a desire for change, in order to seek out the person behind the mask. Good conversations should not be made up of nonsense, but of a meeting of two sharing the human condition. It should bring a purer understanding of others and offer a release of emotions more than drive away unpleasant thoughts or kill time. If we want,we can reach beyond the superficiality(膚淺)of talking into the vast kingdom of wisdom.
1.The author used a movie as an example to show that ____________.
A. overused words can’t fully express feelings of a speaker
B. how and why a moving movie can deeply affect a speaker
C. only expanding vocabulary can describe moving experiences
D. the largest or most impressive words should he used by speakers
2.“Seek out the person behind the mask” in the last paragraph means___________.
A. remove the mask of others B. distrust the others’ appearance
C. feel doubtful about the others D. get the hidden truth beyond words
3.According to the author, a good conversation is ___________.
A. a way to free the unpleasant or pass time B. a desire to raise more questions
C. an exchange of emotions and experiences D. a route to the kingdom of wisdom
4.The best title of the passage could be ___________.
A. Vocabulary in Conversations B. Art of Conversations
C. Ability in Conversations D. Importance of Conversations

Do you sometimes argue about what seems to you to be a simple fact? Do you argue whether it’s cold outdoors or whether the car in front of you is going faster than the speed limit (限速)?
If you get into such arguments, try to think about the story about the six blind men and the elephant. The first blind man who felt the elephant’s trunk (象鼻) said it was like a snake. The second who felt the elephant’s side said it was like a wall, while the third said it was like a spear( 矛 ) as he touched the animal’s tusk. The fourth, who took hold of the elephant’s tail insisted that it was like a rope. The fifth man said it looked liked a tree as he put his arms around one of the elephant’s legs. The last, who was tall and got hold of the elephant’s ears, said it was like a huge fan.
Each man’s idea of the animal came from his own experience. So if someone disagrees with you about a “simple fact”, it’s often because his experience in the matter is different from yours.
To see how hard it is for even one person to make up his mind about a “simple fact”, try this simple experiment. Get three large bowls. Put ice water in one. Put hot water in the second. Put lukewarm water (溫水)in the third. Now put your left hand in the hot water. Put your right hand in the lukewarm water. Your right hand will tell you the water is cold. Your left hand will tell you it is hot.
1.The man who touched the elephant’s ears must be very_______.
A. heavy B. thin
C. tall D. strong
2.The underlined word “it” in the last line of the paragraph refers to _______.
A. your left hand B. your right hand
C. the water D. the bowl
3.What makes people think about simple facts differently?
A. People’s wrong ideas. B. People’s different experience.
C. Simple facts are different sometimes. D. People often disagree with each other.
4.It can be inferred from the passage that we should__________.
A. learn from the blind men B. not agree about simple facts
C. never think about simple facts D. never decide anything with one side

I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide.
As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao. Supported by the Ladies’ Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls’ school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys’ school.
Mrs. Gutzlaff’s comprador (買辦)happened to come from my village and was actually my father’s friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff’s school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school, It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff’s school. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God.
1.How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff’s school?
A. Through his father’s request.
B. Through his father’s friend’s help.
C. Through his own efforts at exams.
D. Through Mrs. Gutzlaff’s influence.
2.Why did the author’s parents put him into an English school?
A. It met with Chinese public opinion.
B. An English school was more influential.
C. He could become a successful interpreter.
D. Foreign trade with China was developing fast.
3.What did the author think of his parents’ decision to put him into an English school?
A. It was skeptical. B. It was wonderful.
C. It was thoughtful. D. It was mysterious.
4.What does the underlined word “sequences” in the last sentence probably mean?
A. Results. B. Orders.
C. Series. D. Progress.
