W: Brad, what about going to Hillcrest Orchards(果園) this weekend?

M: Are the apples there ready to pick now?

W: Yes. I’m sure we’ll have great fun there. You know there are hundreds of apple trees for people to pick their own apples.

M: I really look forward to doing that. But I’ve already promised Aunt Brown I’ll help take care of Jim for her this weekend.

W: We can take him with us. There are smaller apple trees for children to pick fruit. I’m sure Jim will love doing that.

M: That’s a brilliant idea. I’ll call Aunt Brown and tell her about that.

W: Good. What about calling her now?

M: I’m afraid she’s still on her way home. She usually drives to pick up Jim around 5:00 pm. We can call her a bit later. Let’s help Mom prepare dinner now.

【題目】 It truly doesn't take much to encourage others and, best of all, it is very affordable and requires no special equipment. Here are some simple ways to encourage others.

Take an interest.

I believe this is one of the most practical ways of encouraging others.

Show that you're interested in what they're doing. 1People like to talk about themselves and once you get them talking, you fire up their enthusiasm.

Acknowledge a job well done.

Great achievements take time and effort. You can encourage others by acknowledging their efforts. A simple “well done" or “thank you" can be influential. 2

Lend a hand.

3 In fact, you can be the first one to lend a hand. If a person sees you are willing to spend your time and energy on their interests, they will be more encouraged to see it through and less likely to give up.

4

Thank someone when he/she does something for you. Thank your partner after he/ she cooks a nice meal. Thank a friend for lending you a book. A simple “thank you" lets others know what they have done is meaningful to you.

Give a call to your friend.

As you know, we're all busy, and in the age of emails and texts, phone calls seem ancient to many people.

5 Even if they miss the call they'll appreciate the effort and your message. Make an effort to do this just once a week for one person and see how your connections respond to the encouragement.

A.Get them talking.

B.Show your appreciation.

C.Do something unexpected.

D.But people love hearing from friends.

E.You don't have to wait for someone to ask you for advice.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個完整的故事。

School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was. 'It's time to rise! ' It was Mom's loudest voices, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.

By then. I couldn’t get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me. We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.

Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make or buy it? Oh, well, I thought. It's only one time, so it’s no big deal. But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, 'Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunch? '

Mom answered, 'Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting them, then who is? '

So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet(儲物間) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl-the bad boy of the third - grade classroom. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.

Carl lived in a group foster home(集體寄養(yǎng)之家). He was loud and somewhat of a thief, he would take just about anything that wasn't fastened down(蓋緊), so he wasn’t welcome at school. Mom and I decided that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

【題目】 Have you ever wondered why some days all you want to do is snack?

Under normal circumstances, we feel hungry when we have burnt up the food we have eaten as energy and our blood sugar and insulin (胰島素)levels begin to drop. Ghrelin, a hormone connected to appetite, then communicates this to the brain, which is how we feel the need to eat. But some sorts of things can influence this process.

According to a 2011 study by researchers at Columbia University in the US, those who are lack of sleep eat almost 300 calories a day more than those who get enough sleep. This is because levels of the hormone ghrelin, which tells the brain we need to eat, increase when we don’t get enough sleep. The Columbia researchers noted that the women who didn’t get enough sleep took in more fat rising by around 30g on sleep-lack daysfour times as much as the average increase for men.

The bright blue light emitted by devices such as smartphones and tablets may give an unwelcome encouragement to your appetite.Research this year found that your appetite continued to increase when you are exposed to the light. It also changed people’s metabolism(新陳代謝), as blood tests showed that the blue-light subjects had higher insulin and glucose levels. One possible explanation is that bright blue light at night confuses our body clock, which has a role in controlling when we feel the need to eat.

1What really causes people to feel hungry?

A.Our brain.B.A hormone.C.Our appetite.D.Blood sugar.

2Which of the following is true?

A.Women take in fat easily.

B.Lack of sleep may lead to hunger.

C.The body clock does harm to hunger.

D.Blue-light subjects control appetite.

3What does the underlined word “emitted” mean in Paragraph 4?

【題目】 Each summer, Craig Stihler and Jack Wallace, scientists for the state of West Virginia hike to Peacock Cave to count Virginia big-eared bats. 1. They want to see if the number of bats is going up or down.

I was there to learn about the bats for my book. After we arrived at the small entrance to Peacock Cave, Craig and Jack unpacked their equipment. Crale said, “2 .Hibernating (冬眠)bats may be awakened and fly around and burn up the fat they've stored in their bodies. Without that food supply, they might not live until spring when they can eat insects again. And bat mothers may drop their babies. “

As night settled in,they set up a night-vision scope (觀察儀器).3 .They also set up a radio-like bat detector outside the cave. It picks up bat sounds that our ears can’t hear. For the next two hours, Craig counted the bats by speaking into a handheld voice recorder each time five bats flew out of the cave. By the time the last bat left the cave at about 10:30 p. m., Craig and Jack had counted 1,242 bats! 4 .Craig explained that when the first count was taken at Peacock Cave in 1983, there were only 160 Virginia big-eared bats. Projects to help protect bats have helped the bats make a remarkable comeback. Today the total number of Virginia big-eared bats there are more than 25,000.

5 .They will continue to need human’s help if they are going to survive into the future.

A.Why do they do so?
