16.MELBOURNE,Australia-A kangaroo frightened by a man walking his dog attacked the pair, throwing the pet underwater and hitting the owner in the stomach with its back legs. The Australian,Chris Rickard, was in stable condition Monday after the attack, which ended when the 49-year-old struck the kangaroo in the throat.
Rickard said he was walking his blue dog,Rocky,on Sunday morning when they surprised a sleeping kangaroo in Arthur's Creek northeast of Melbourne. The dog chased the animal into a pond, when the kangaroo turned and knocked the pet underwater.
When Rickard tried to pull his dog free, the kangaroo turned on him, attacking with its back legs and tearing a deep cut into his stomach and across his face.
"I thought I might take action to drag the dog out from under his grasp, but I didn't expect him to actually attack me,"Rickard,49,told The Herald Sun newspaper."It was a shock at the start because it was a kangaroo, about 5 feet high, they don't go around killing people."
"I was stuck having to hold on to the dog with both hands because it was half drowned and I couldn't really see anything because the kangaroo just attacked me."
He added,"All I could do was just keep pushing for the bank and he was trying to push me under the water,so at that point I struck him in the throat and that made him back off a little bit.
"I don't think I'll ever be able to watch kangaroo programs quite the same as I used to-it might bring back a couple of bad memories."
Kangaroos rarely attack people but will fight if they feel threatened.

7.The United States is faced with serious traffic problems.Too many cars travel on the freeways to and from the city.This heavy traffic causes delays and lots of pollution from cars that are using their engines but not moving anywhere.Many cars going nowhere is called a"traffic jam."
While many cities in the United States have traffic problems,some of the worst are in Los Angeles,California.Los Angeles is a big city with a large downtown area.One of the reasons why there is so much traffic is that few people use public transportation to get around
Experts say one possible solution to the traffic problem in Los Angeles would be to make
people want to use the public transportation system of buses instead of their own cars.People say the buses should be made easier,faster,less costly and more dependable than driving a car.
One suggestion is to reduce the cost of riding the bus.People who usually drive their cars could save a lot of money on gas and parking costs.Also,Los Angeles could make the buses easier for people to use.The buses could travel to more places in the city.And there could be more special lanes on the freeways that only buses could drive in.These changes would make taking the bus faster and easier than driving a car.
Other experts have said that the best way to ease traffic problems is to charge people money to drive on the freeways.These charges,or tolls,would be for the most crowded roads.The tolls would be in effect during the times of day when most people drive to work and home again.These times in the morning and late afternoon are called"rush hour".People would try to avoid driving on these roads,which would decrease the amount of traffic.Also,the money collected from these tolls could be used to improve the roads and public transportation system.

B.Time wasting.
C.Serious air pollution.
D.Traffic jams.
38.The reason why Los Angeles has some of the worst traffic problems is thatC.
A.there is a lack of public transportation
B.the city is big with a large population
C.most people like to get around by car
D.many people like to travel there for shopping
39.One of the ways the experts suggest is thatC.
A.people should avoid driving to work and home
B.more roads should be built for the increasing private cars
C.people should be charged on the most crowded roads during rush hour
D.more special lanes on the freeways should be marked out for private cars
40.According to the passage,if the solutions were carried out,D
A.more cars would be reduced and more roads would be built
B.it would be easier but slower to take buses than to drive cars

4.Nowadays,it seems that everybody wants to be a leader.Countless books about how to manage a company or influence others fill bookstores.But one needn't be a CEO or Politician lo be a leader.Former U.S.President John Adams said,"If your action inspires others to dream more,learn more,do more and become more,you are a leader.
The key to becoming such a leader lies in.character.People follow only those whom they respect,trust and admire.What attractive traits does such a leader have?Below are five of the most important.
Leaders have courage
The New York firefighters who ran into the burning World Trade Tower to rescue others are modem-day models of courage.Yet even more than physical courage,the everyday demands of modem life require moral courage.Insisting on doing the right thing despite pressure to act otherwise takes such courage.
Leaders must face fear and doubt in many of the decisions they make.Having these feelings doesn't mean one isn't courageous.After all,courage is not the absence of fear.Rather,it's doing the right thing despite one's fears.
Leaders are humble
Being humble simply means having an accurate view of one's own limitations.Everybody has limitations.Leaders deal with theirs by seeking help from others.
When leaders seek help,they recognize the skills that order other people bring to the table.And when they are successful,leaders generously praise all who contributed to the success.Humble leaders don't promote themselves; they promote others,
learning is a lifelong goal,no matter one's position.Humble leaders are never too proud to learn from all sources of knowledge-even those under them.
Leaders serve others
Just Christ said,"If anyone wants to be first,he must be the very last,and the servant of all."Leaders serve others and put the needs of others before themselves.They make the good of everyone on the team a personal priority.
Leaders who serve others help the whole team accomplish more.Leaders do things to make sure everybody has the resources needed."They go the extra mile to help out during a busy rush.When leaders serve,followers are also encouraged to serve each other.
Leaders have passion
Money or success can motivate someone to show up for an activity,But what motivates one to really put his heart into something?The answer is passion-the feeling that the activity is significant.
Outstanding leaders inspire others because they are motivated by passion for what they do.Leaders show the significance of routine work to others by emphasizing the big picture.They demonstrate how an activity not only benefits the individual,but also one's family,community and entire society.Their passion ignites the passion of others.
Leaders have integrity
One's integrity can be measured by what one does when nobody is looking.Leaders practice what they preach all the time,not just in the presence of others.Leaders also set the example for integrity.If a leader values being punctual,he arrives early-
Leadership is more about who you are than what you know or can do.By following these principles,you can become a better person.And that in turn will make you a better leader.

60.Which should be the very beginning of the text?C
A.Strong and effective leadership might have made the team more successful.
B.Leadership is the position of being the leader.
C.Leadership is not just about what you know or do-it1s also about who you are!
D.Leadership refers to the set of characteristics.

Many experts and green groups fear they will come true unless there is a united global effort to hold back greenhouse gas outpouring.In the decades to come,Asia---home to more than half the world's 63billion people-will change from one climate extreme to another,with tired farmers battling droughts,floods,disease,food shortages and rising sea levels.
"It's not a pretty picture,"said Steve Sawyer,climate policy adviser with Greenpeace in Amsterdam.Global warming and changes of weather patterns are already occurring and there is more than enough carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to drive climate change for decades to come.
Already,changes are being felt in Asia but worse is likely to come,Sawyer and top climate bodies say,and could lead to mass migration and widespread human disasters.According to predictions,icebergs will melt faster,some Pacific and Indian Ocean islands will have to evacuate(疏散) or build sea defenses,storms will become more intense and insect and water-borne diseases will move into new areas as the world warms.
All this comes with rising populations and demand for food,water and other resources.Experts say environmental worsening such as deforestation and pollution will probably enlarge the results of climate change.
In what could be a sign of the future,Japan was hit by a record of 10typhoons and tropical storms this year,while two-thirds of Bangladesh,parts of Nepal and large areas of northeastern India were flooded,affecting 50million people,destroying livelihoods and making tens of thousands ill.
The year before,a winter cold struck and a summer heat wave killed more than 2,000people in India.

1.Our brains work in complex and strange ways. There are some people who can calculate the day of the week for any given date in 40,000 years, but who cannot add two plus two.Others can perform complex classical piano pieces after hearing them once, but they cannot read or write.
Dr.J.Langdon Down first described this condition in 1887.He called these people idiot savants. An idiot savant is a person who has significant mental impairment (損傷),such as in autism or retardation. At the same time, the person also exhibits some extraordinary skills, which are unusual for most people. The skills of the savant may vary from being exceptionally gifted in music or in mathematics,or having a photographic memory.
One of the first descriptions of a human who could calculate quickly was written in 1789 by Dr.Benjamin Rush,an American doctor. His patient,Thomas Fuller, was brought to Virginia as a slave in 1724.It took Thomas only 90 seconds to work out that a man who has lived 70 years,17 days, and 12 hours has lived 2,210,500,800 seconds.Despite this ability,he died in 1790 without ever learning to read or write.
Another idiot savant slave became famous as a pianist in the 1860s.Blind Tom had a vocabulary of only 100 words, but he played 5,000 musical pieces beautifully.
In the excellent movie Rain Man,made in 1988 and available on video cassette,Dustin Hoffman plays an idiot savant who amazes his brother played by Tom Cruise, with his ability to perform complex calculations very rapidly.
Today we more clearly recognize that the idiot savant is special because of brain impairment.Yet not all brain impairment leads to savant skills. Some studies have shown that people who have purposeful interruption of the left side of the brain can develop idiot savant skills. However few people wish to participate in such experiments. There are many excellent reasons for not undergoing unnecessary experimentation on one's brain. The term idiot savant is outdated and inappropriate.Virtually all savants have a high degree of intelligence and are thus not idiots.
63.What does the passage mainly talk about?A
A.Idiot savants have areas of outstanding abilities.
B.Human Beings have complicated thinking process.
C.The brains of the idiot savants are partly impaired.
D.The reasons why people have wonderful skills vary.
64.Which of the following can be done by Rain Man?D
A.He can play wonderful pieces of classical music.
B.He can guess out exactly the length of a man's life.
C.He can memorize the contents of the pictures fast.
D.He can count matches dropped on the floor quickly.
65.What can you infer from the passage?C
A.Idiot savants have real talents for art and math.
B.Dr.Down is the first person who found idiot savants.
C.Few people wish to risk becoming savants by brain operations.
D.Intentional left brain impairments will surely lead to idiot savants.

Robots,such as the sound-sensitive Chapit,answer simple questions and even joke with people to help the lonely fight loneliness and stay active in old age.
"Many older people in Japan live alone and have no one to talk to,"said Kazuya Kitamura,a representative of the expo organizer."Communication robots accompany people and don't mind listening to the same stories over and over again."
While Chapit,a relatively simple robot, managed to  allure a corporate partner, many researchers, such as Kiyoshi Matsumoto,a professor at the University of Tokyo, struggle to interest sponsors for more expensive projects.
Matsumoto's"Personal Mobility Robot",equipped with four cameras and a sensor to recognize the user's centre of gravity,is designed to help the elderly move around without pressing buttons, using joysticks(操縱桿) or rotating(轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng)) wheels as in traditional wheelchairs.
The robot can also help find misplaced glasses by identifying them with a sensor.
"We have developed a robot that can assist many people, but because of the high cost,we still haven't found a sponsor,"said Matsumoto, who added that the cost of the machine,if massproduced, would be comparable to that of a car.

Other robots,such as the award-winning"DiGRO"can support busy parents who have little time to play with their children.
The robot can use the Internet to find a simple image and then draw pictures, keeping children company while their parents work.
Japan has one of the world's fastest-ageing societies and the government predicts that by 2050the proportion of people over 65will reach 40percent.

Here is what they did.Researchers took 60adults and randomly divided them into three groups of 20.Then they gave the groups three different types of"listen-and-repeat"learning conditions.Researchers had one group simply speak the words.They had the second group speak the words to a rhythm,or beat.And they asked the third group to sing the words.
All three groups studied words from the Hungarian language for 15minutes.Then they took part in a series of language tests to see what they remembered.
Why Hungarian,you ask?Researchers said they chose Hungarian because not many people know the language.It does not share any roots with Germanic or Romance languages,such as Italian or Spanish.After the tests were over,the singers came out on top.The people who learned these new Hungarian words by singing them showed a higher overall performance.They did the best in four out of five of the tests.They also performed two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.
Dr.Katie Overy says singing could lead to new ways to learn a foreign language.The brain likes to remember things when they are contained in a catchy 3,or memorable 4,tune 5.
Dr.Ludke said the findings could help those who struggle to learn foreign languages.On the University of Edinburgh's website Dr.Ludke writes,"This study provides the first experimental evidence that a listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning,and opens the door for future research in this area."
