【題目】 People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均勻的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
"We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth. "
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack said. "Our data suggest that, whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use/span> the eyes more and mouth less. "
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

【題目】My passion started decades ago as a kid on a flight to India. I was attracted by how such a large airplane was able to glide(滑翔)smoothly above the clouds. I made it a goal to become a pilot. I am now a pilot for American airlines. Though being a pilot consumes my life,it is a job worth doing.
My job is slightly different compared to that of a typical pilot. Most pilots have their routes they fly. They then familiarize(使…熟悉)themselves with the routes. However, in my case,I participate in any job where a pilot is immediately required. It is true that some days I might have a workday from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon. In fact, some days,I might even begin my work at three in the morning when I am needed to fly. Sometimes, as for the typical day,I do not have one.

As I greet passengers boarding the airplane,I realize I,along with other airline pilots, have enhanced(提高)the lives of those who we are serving. A family was walking in from the gate, explaining that their beloved one was ill and had to be taken to a big hospital in another city immediately. 【題目】Plastic is everywhere because plastic is an extremely useful material. It is cheap, strong and lightweight. What’s more, it can take on nearly any form or shape, from soft and stretchy (有彈性的) to hard and glasslike.
Plastic, however, is far from perfect. It may even be bad for us.Studies now suggest that poisonous chemicals can get out of some types of plastic, get into our bodies, and cause a variety of health problems, including cancer, birth defects and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (注意缺陷障礙).
Two types of chemicals in particular have raised special concern lately. They are called phthalates (鄰苯二甲酸鹽) and Bisphenol-A (二酚基丙烷), BPA for short. Not all plastic products contain them. But the ones that do are surrounded by controversy (爭議).That’s because experts disagree on how dangerous these chemicals are.
Plastic is a single word, but plastic isn’t just one thing. What all plastics share in common are plasticizers -- special chemicals that allow the material to be changed into nearly any shape or texture.Plasticizers (塑化劑) are added to plastic during the manufacturing process.
Phthalates and BPA are two types of plasticizers that work in different ways.Phthalates add softness to things like shampoo bottles, raincoats and rubber. They are also used in perfumes and makeup.BPA, on the other hand, gives a hard, clear, almost glasslike feel to products such as infant bottles.BPA also appears in food and soda cans, DVDs and other unexpected places.
How do these chemicals get into us? When plastic is heated in the microwave or dishwasher, chewed on or scratched, the chemicals can seep (滲透) out of the plastic.Even though we can’t see them, we eat them, drink them and breathe them in.
Scientists and parents are especially worried about young children, who tend to chew on everything, including plastic.Dozens of countries, including the European Union, Japan, Canada and Mexico have already banned phthalates from products made for children younger than three.California and Washington have done the same. And a number of other states are considering similar rules. As for BPA, Canada became the first country to ban the chemical from baby bottles.A dozen states are considering it.
【1】What can we know about the plastic from the first paragraph?
A.Its characters and effects.
B.Its wide use and bad points.
C.Its importance and chemicals.
D.Its popularity and advantages.
【2】Which of the following products contains BPA?
A.A soft plastic cup. B.A pencil eraser.
C.A baby milk bottle. D.A new perfume.
【3】Phthalates and BPA can get into us __________.
A.through mouth or nose
B.through blood transfusion
C.by feeling plastic products
D.by heating in the microwave
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.A new ban on plastic products.
B.Problems caused by the plastic.
C.Good points of the plastic.
D.The use of plasticizers.

【題目】One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as the “l(fā)ast paradise (天堂) on earth”.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. In those countries where there was a rush to make quick money out of seaside holidays, over-crowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal.
Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most. In recent years, Nepal set out to attract foreign visitors to fund developments in health and education. Its forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise. In fact, the nature all too soon felt the effects of thousands of holiday-makers traveling through the forest land. Ancient tracks became major routes for the walkers, with the consequent exploitation (開發(fā)) of precious trees and plants.
Not only can the environment of a country suffer from the sudden growth of tourism. The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multi-national organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land. Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled (處理) in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Their needs and problems are more important than those of the tourist companies. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve (保護) the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
【1】What does the author actually mean in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?
A.The Pacific island is a paradise.
B.The Pacific island is worth visiting.
C.The advertisement is not persuasive
D.The advertisement is not impressive.
【2】The example of Nepal is used to suggest ______.
A.its natural resources are untouched
B.its forests are exploited for farmland
C.it develops well in health and education
D.it suffers from the heavy flow of tourists
【3】Which of the following determines the future of tourism?
A.The number of tourists.
B.The improvement
C.The promotion of new products.
D.The management of tourism.
【4】The author’s attitude towards the development of the tourist industry is ______.
A.optimistic B.objective
C.doubtful D.Negative

It is common for students to find part-time job nowadays. Last summer vacation, I worked as a waiter at restaurant. It was the first time that I have earned money by myself. With the money I earned I could buy something what I needed. I was quite exciting about it. Now as a result of this part-time job, I needn’t to ask my parents for money as before. I think it helpful for a student to know about the outside world and that it’s a good preparation in the future. I not only understand the value of money, and also know how to get along with another. In a word, I had a fruitful vacation.
