Scientists announced that they had found the gravitational waves(引力波)that confirmed a prediction made by Albert Einstein a century ago.The discovery, made with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational—Wave Observatory, known as LIGO,is the milestone(里程碑)in a decades—long search for signs of this phenomenon."The discovery will open a new window onto the universe,"said David Reitze, executive director of LIGO.

Since humans first watched skyward,we have relied on light of all wavelengths to describe the universe. The light that could be seen first showed the starry heavens, while infrared(紅外線的)waves allowed us to see older and more distant stars.

But now, researchers will be able to sense the universe in a whole new way: with their "ears"."We can hear gravitational waves. We can hear the universe,"Gabriela Gonzalez,LIGO's spokeswoman at Louisiana State University, said."That's one of the beautiful things about this: We are not only going to be seeing the universe,we are going to be listening to it."

Gravitational waves, which Einstein predicted as part of his general theory of relativity, occur as objects accelerate or decelerate through space, much the way a boat moving on a lake sends waves across the water's surface. But they're so tiny that until now it's been nearly impossible to find them, even those caused by something as large as a planet moving around the sun.

To pick up this signal, scientists have to look for violent events in the universe. This particular signal appears to have been caused by a collision. That occurred about 1.3 billion years ago between two black holes, holding 29 and 36 solar masses(太陽質(zhì)量).

Fiona Harrison, chair of Caltesh's division of physics, mathematics and astronomy, guessed that hundreds of new events would be found over the next few years, allowing scientists to perform a range of different types of studies. "There are probably many events we haven't dreamed of and this is just the beginning,"she said.

1.Why did Gabriela Gonzalez think LIGO's discovery important?

A. It confirmed Einstein's scientific prediction.

B. It allowed scientists to see more distant stars.

C. It changed traditional ideas about the universe.

D. It offered different way to study the universe.

2.It's hard to find gravitational waves because they .

A. are too far to be felt

B. are too weak to be observed

C. are disturbed bu other planets

D. disappear soon after they happen

3.Which of the following would scientists consider to be a violent event?

A. Hearing the universe.

B. Searching for infrared waves.

C. A collision between black waves.

D. A planet moving around the sun.

4.It can be concluded that .

A. gravitational waves also exist in objects at rest

B. there's a long way to go in studying the universe.

C. gravitational waves show the beginning of the universe.

D. scientists began studying gravitational waves in recent years.

Lots of people find it hard to get up in the morning and put the blame on the alarm clock. In fact, the key to easy morning wake-up lies in resting your body clock 1. Here is how to make one.

2. In order to make a change, you need to decide why it’s important. Do you want to get up in time to have breakfast with your family, get in some exercise or just be better prepared for your day? Once you are clear about your reason, tell your family or roommates about the change you want to make.

That’s a quarter-hour more you could be sleeping if you bought a coffee maker with a timer.

• Keep your sleep/wake schedule on weekends. If you’re tired out by Friday night, sleeping in on Saturday could sound wonderful. But compensating (彌補) on the weekends actually feeds into your sleepiness the following week, a recent study found.4.

• Keep a record and evaluate it weekly. Keep track of your efforts and write down how you feel. After you’ve tried a new method for a week, take a look at your record.5. If rot, take another look at other methods you could try.

The current Ebola (埃博拉病毒)outbreak in western and central Africa has infected at least 3,069 people, including 1,552 dead, making it the largest outbreak in history. Ebola is a deadly virus-about 60 percent of people infected with it have died.

How is Ebola doing its harm?

When a person becomes infected with Ebola, the virus damages the body’s immune (免疫的)cells, which defend against infection, said a researcher at Lancaster University. But if a person’s immune system can stand up to this attack, then he is more likely to survive the disease.

The patients that survive it best are those who don’t get such a bad disadvantage in immune system. But if the body isn’t able to get rid of this attack, then the immune system becomes less able to regulate(調(diào)節(jié)) itself. This means the immune system is more likely to run out of control, leading to a drop in blood pressure, multi-organ failure and eventually death.

What are the common symptoms of the disease?

Fever. Headache. Joint and muscle aches. Weakness. Diarrhea. Vomiting. Stomach pain. Lack of appetite. Chills. Rash. Redness in the eyes. Hiccups. Cough. Sore throat. Chest pain. Difficult breathing or swallowing. Bleeding inside and outside of the body.

How to prevent the spread of Ebola?

Ebola can be spread primarily via direct contact with patients, specifically the blood and fluids of an infected patient.

We should avoid contact with infected patients and objects such as clothing, bedding, and needles used by them. Avoid areas where infections have been reported. For now, the disease has only been confirmed in central and West Africa, four cases in America and Europe. Avoid eating wild-caught bush meat. Researchers have suspected that the disease came to humans via animals, probably through the meat of primates(靈長類). If you’re in an area where the disease has been reported, avoid purchasing, eating, or handling wild game to stay on the safe side.

Wear protective medical clothing if you’re around infected patients. Extreme caution is necessary. Hospital workers must use masks, gloves, goggles, and gowns, which needed to be worn at all times if you’re around infected patients.

How Do People Survive Ebola?

Doctors don’t know for certain who will survive Ebola, and there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease. Although in the minority, some people do recover from infection.

Our suggestions include:

Maintain your electrolytes(電解質(zhì)) and body liquid. Sports drinks can be used. Monitor your blood pressure and control it if necessary. Dropping blood pressure may be a serious sign of infection. Breathe in an oxygen-rich environment. Quickly address any symptoms of infection. Be honest about when and where you’re feeling pain.

1.Ebola causes the death of a human being by .

A. attacking him with high fever B. regulating his immune system

C. damaging his immune cells D. harming all his organs directly

2.What is NOT mentioned as the symptom of Ebola?

A. Fever and chills B. Swallowing difficulty

C. Lack of appetite D. High blood pressure

3.In order not to be infected by Ebola, we should .

A. have the clothing of the infected cleaned

B. avoid eating wild animals like monkeys

C. not travel to Africa, America or Europe

D. stay at home without going anywhere

4.It is true that .

A. a certain number of people survive Ebola

B. human has found a special cure for Ebola

C. oxygen can save infected people’s lives

D. low blood pressure is surely caused by Ebola

You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn it. You do not need to be strong. But you need to be quick. And you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind. First, you must ask yourself, “Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side?” You must think about this all the time on the boat. The wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.

Let’s start with the wind blowing from behind. This means the wind and the boat are going in the same direction. Then you must always keep the sail outside the boat. It should be at a 90° angle (角度) the boat. Then it will catch the wind best.

If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boat In this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boat. It should be at a 45° angle to the boat. It needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn’t flap (擺動). It shouldn’t look like a flag on a flagpole. If it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.

Sailing into the wind is not possible. If you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stop. You may want to go in that direction. It is possible, but you can’t go in a straight line. You must go first in one direction and then in another. This is called tacking. When you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.

1.What should you consider first while sailing?

A. Wave levels. B. Size of sails.

C. Sailors’ strength. D. Wind directions.

2.What does the word “It” underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. The boat. B. The wind.

C. The sail. D. The angle.

3.What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?

A. Tack the boat. B. Lower the sail.

C. Move in a straight line. D. Allow the sail to flap.

4.Where can you probably find the text?

A. In a physics textbook. B. In a tourist guidebook.

C. In a popular magazine. D. In an official report.
