【題目】Remarkable Ways to Push Yourself Harder
Deep inside us, we know that hard work is the key to success. 【1】 Here are the rules that you can also apply to make yourself work really hard.
Practice working hard.
【2】 Therefore, if you want to be a hard worker, you must practice working hard. Practice waking up early, practice doing a lot of work, and practice working more hours. One day you will wake up and realize that you are a hard worker.
【3】
Many hard workers always have a large purpose that forces them to work. Don’t just think of buying a car or a big house because this is not a purpose strong enough to push you forward. An example of a big purpose is deciding that you are working hard so that you bring change in the lives of your friends, family, and neighborhood. A strong purpose always involves bringing a large positive change in any particular setting.
Surround yourself with hard workers.
【4】 But if you surround yourself with hardworking people, you will find yourself working hard towards your goal. Avoid friends who just want to have fun all the time. This type of friends will always discourage you when you attempt to work hard. Therefore, always surround yourself with go-getters.
Read and watch inspirational materials.
You can also push yourself harder through reading and watching inspirational material.
【5】 These materials make you work hard because they remove discouragement and assure you that you will never fail if you push yourself to the limit.
A.Have a strong purpose.
B.Find a great goal to overcome your laziness.
C.Like other skills, one has to practice it to perfect it.
D.Inspirational material makes you believe in yourself.

【題目】 Mya Le Thai is a scientist studying at the University of California. She recently discovered a process that may result in batteries that last forever. Thai said she had been frustrated that the batteries for her wireless devices degrade(退化). Over time, they fail to charge fully. She decided to do something about that problem.
At first, she and her team thought about inventing a new battery. But as they experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium-ion batteries(鋰電池) to last forever. Lithium-ion batteries power most wireless devices. Over time, the batteries lose the ability to hold a charge. One of the reasons lithium-ion batteries degrade is their use of nanowires(納米線) to carry electricity. Nanowires are extremely thin. Nanowires are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries. But Thai said their thinness also makes them weak. “Nanowires break over time,” she said. “That’s why they lose capacity.”
But, Thai had a theory: The nanowires might last longer if covered with a gel(凝膠). She and the team tested her theory. The team tried many coverings for the wires. PMMA was one of them. The PMMA coated nanowires showed no evidence of damage. The results suggest that batteries could last forever, without losing charging ability. Thai hopes to continue her research to understand why this gel works so well and to see if any other gel could create better results.
Mya Le Thai told VOA she is enjoying the publicity about her discovery. She said she never expected her research to get media coverage. “It’s kind of cool,” she said. “I’m really glad people are showing interest in my work and not just in the work itself, but also in technology and energy.”
【1】Why did Mya Le Thai make up her mind to settle the problem about her wireless devices degrade?
A.Because her wireless devices couldn’t work at all.
B.Because she discovered a new kind of battery.
C.Because the batteries for her wireless devices couldn’t last long.
D.Because she wanted to show her new research.
【2】What prevents lithium-ion batteries from lasting forever?
A.PMMA.B.Nanowires.
C.Electricity.D.Power.
【3】How can the scientist make the nanowires last longer?
A.By using a gel to cover them.B.By cutting them shorter.
C.By making them longer.D.By using a gel to make wire.
【4】What kind of person is Mya Le Thai?
A.Generous and wise.B.Honest and wise.
C.Honest and hard-working.D.Modest and creative.

【題目】 On March 25, 2010, Kate and David Ogg heard the words every parent fears: Their newborn son wasn’t going to make it. Their twins—a girl and a boy—were born two minutes apart and 14 weeks premature, weighing just over two pounds each. Doctors had tried to save the boy for 20 minutes but saw no improvement. His heartbeat was nearly gone, and he’d stopped breathing. The baby had just moments to live.
“I saw him gasp (喘氣), but the doctor said it was no use,” Kate said. “I know it sounds stupid, but if he was still gasping, that was a sign of life. I wasn’t going to give up easily.”
Still, the Sydney couple knew this was likely goodbye. In an effort to treasure her last minutes with the tiny boy, Kate asked to hold him.
“I wanted to meet him, and for him to know us,” Kate told Today. “We’d resigned ourselves to the fact that we were going to lose him, and we were just trying to make the most of those last, precious moments.”
Kate unwrapped the boy, whom the couple had already named Jamie, from his hospital blanket and ordered David to take his shirt off and join them in bed. The first-time parents wanted their son to be as warm as possible and hoped the skin-to- skin contact would improve his condition. They also talked to him.
"We were trying to attract him to stay.” Kate said. “We explained his name and that he had a twin that he had to look out for and how hard we had tried to have him.”
