【題目】Does your local town have a nickname? If so,what does it say about the area and the people who live there?
Many cities are recognized across the world by their unofficial titles.New York is the Big Apple,London is the Big Smoke, and Los Angeles is famously called La La Land.
Now Britain's National Mapping Agency(規(guī)劃局),Ordnance Survey, and the British Linguistics (語(yǔ)言學(xué))Charity, the English Project, are launching an interactive project to uncover the nicknames people use for local places.
The project, which was launched last week to coincide with English Language Day,is called Location Lingo. It aims to identify the names people use every day, whether it's a term of endearment(昵稱) or a hate name.
The University of Winchester's Professor Bill Lucas is a leader of the English Project. He explains that unofficial place names often show what people think about a place.“The name that people conjure_up or create for a place forms an emotional connection,”he says.“So Basingstoke becomes Amazingstoke,Swindon is known as Swindump.Padstow, hometown of chef Rick Stein,is nicknamed Padstein.”
Basingstoke is a town in central England. The local nickname,Amazingstoke, shows the love that locals seem to have for the area.Swindon,on the other hand,is sometimes called Swindump, showing that local people think it's a big dump.Stanford Le Hope in Essex is called Stanford No Hope by locals. And Padstow in Cornwall is so closely associated with the local celebrity Rick Stein that it's become known as Padstein.
Since launching the online database (數(shù)據(jù)庫(kù)) last week, the creators have already received 3,000 alternative titles for places and landmarks.
Some also say that the project could even have a practical use.Glen Hart,Ordnance Survey's head of research, says the information could be very helpful to the emergency services, for example.“By having the most complete set of nicknames,we could help the emergency services quickly locate the right place, and maybe even save lives,”he says.

【題目】If you have a cat, you already know that a cat isn’t a dog that doesn’t have to be walked. If you’re about to bring a cat into your family, you need to understand that basic fact. The common wisdom is that dogs are friendlier than casts.
In recent years, scientists who have done DNA studies have offered a better way to understand cats. Unlike other animals that people feed, cats domesticated themselves, and, in a way, trained humans. Cats decided to live close to humans because doing so benefited the casts themselves.
Studies show that cats have lived with humans for about 12,000 years, since people first settled down and started farming. When people started storing grain, mice arrived and started eating the grain. Clever cats figured out that mice settlements where people stored grain were easy for hunting, so they started hanging around. Cats did what they needed to do to get the people to let them stay, but they kept up their independence. Over time, cats allowed humans to get a bit closer to them. Later, the farmers did befriend the cats. Certainly, it didn’t do them any harm because they could see the cats were really helping them out by eating mice.
Today, about a third of American families have cats. In most of those homes, the cats are still more interested in pleasing themselves than in pleasing their human families. A dog may do anything it can to make you happy, but kitty will teach you to make kitty happy.

C. more warm-hearted D. more frightening
【2】According to the text, why do cats decide to stay close to humans?

【3】What may be the best title for the text?
A. A common point between dogs and cats
B. The reasons why people like dogs
C. A disadvantage of raising cats
D. The basic fact about cats.

【題目】A study published Monday found that people who sleep less tend to be fat,and experts said it’s time to find out if more sleep will fight fatness.
“We’ve put so much emphasis on diet and exercise that we’ve failed to recognize the value of good sleep,”said Fred Turek,a physician at Northwestern University.
Monday’s study from Eastern Virgnia Medical School in Norfolk covered 1,000 people and found that total sleep time decreased as body mass index-a measure of weight based on height increased.
“Men slept an average of 27 minutes less than women and overweight and fat patients slept less than patients with normal weights,”it said.In general the fatter subjects slept about 1.8 hours a week less than those with normal weights.
“Americans experience insufficient sleep and fat bodies.Clinicians are aware of the burden of fatness on patients,”the study said.
“Our findings suggest that major extensions of sleep time may not be necessary,as an extra 20 minutes of sleep per night seems to be associated with a lower body mass index,”it added.
“We caution that this study does not set up a causeandeffect relationship between restricted sleep and fatness, but investigations indicating success in weight loss via extensions of sleep would help greatly to set up such a relationship.”
The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine along with an editorial by Turek and Northwestern colleague Joseph Bass commenting on it and related research.
Inan interview,Turek said some studies have shown the lack of sleep causes declines in an appetiteholding back protein hormone, and increases in another hormone that cause a longing for food.“In addition neuropathies(神經(jīng)療法)in the brain governing sleep and fatness appear to overlap(部分重疊),”he said.
“Fatness has been rising dramatically in developed countries and reached epidemic(流行病)levels in the United States,”it added,“l(fā)eading to a variety of health problems.”

Almost all of us heard the story “Here Comes the Wolf” when we are little kids. What we can learn from the story is we must be honest. Therefore, there’re lots of phenomenon of dishonesty nowadays.
Being honest does great harm not only to other people and also to yourself. Take the case of fake milk powder for an example. After drinking this kind of milk, the baby had big heads while their legs and arms were still thin, what badly affected their health. To my great relief, the producers got accused and punished net all the serious consequences in the end.

It is known to us, a growing outbreak of H1N1 flu has been sparked in many countries. An increasing number of cases are reported every day.
It’s thought that H1N1 flu spread in the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses do, that is, spreading from person-to-person, mainly through the coughs and sneezes of people who are sick with virus.
Faced with this severe disease, here are some everyday measure we should take to stay healthy. First, cover your nose and mouth by a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especial after you cough or sneeze. Avoid touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. If you get sick, stay home from work and school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Finally, H1N1 flu is not a terribly deadly disease, which is curable. So, don’t be nervous and just keep calm as usually.
