1.prefer+名詞 ——Would you like meat or fish? ——I'd prefer meat, please.

2.prefer+動名詞 Do you prefer cooling for yourself or eating in a restaurant?

4. Prefer sb. to do sth.

Most people prefer trains to buses.

I prefer writing a term paper to taking an examination.

I am used to be a naughty boy, who always made my parents annoyed from time to time. One day, as I was wandering around the field near my house, a cricket attracts my attention and I couldn’t help catch it. I was noticed doing all this by Nick, a friend of mine, and he said to me, “Let’s put the cricket on Selina’s desk to frighten her, all right?”O(jiān)f course I said yes, and I, together with him, were going to do just as what we had discussed. A few minutes before our trick, Selina saw it and was so frightened that she fell off the chair and broke his head. Afterwards, criticizing by my parents, I was made apologize to her. This lesson taught me a lot, warning me not to play a trick at other people. Since then, I have done things much well than before and become a man with manners and dignity.

Eileen Collins

Although she’s never walked on a runway with models in a fancy dress, Eileen Collins is referred to by many as “Miss Universe”. That’s because Collins (1956— ) is an a1 and NASA’s first female shuttle pilot and mission commander.

Until quite recently, this profession was one you’d only find men in. There seemed to be little p2 of entry for females. For them, therefore, Collins is a pioneer(先鋒).

In 1995, she piloted the Discovery shuttle during flight t3 the Russian Space Station. Four years later, she headed a shuttle mission aboard Columbia.

Collins’ achievement is not something that happens o4. It takes years, even decades, of preparation. But to understand the roots of Collins’ love of piloting, we have to go back to her c5. Collins knew from a very young age that she belonged to the skies. She grew up in Elmira in New York State, a town with a significant flight history. The first US National Gliding Contest was h6 there in 1930.

Collins’ passion was also helped by books on the Wright brothers. Starting at age 16, Collins took on small jobs and three years later, she had s7 enough money to accomplish her dream of learning to fly. S8 when the US Air Force opened its doors to female pilots in 1978, the young woman applied and started her t9 as a military pilot. Her team described her as humble (謙卑的) despite all her achievements.

Her parents agree. “She is very down-to-earth. N10 handed her anything. Everything she is today, she’s earned,” her mother said.
