Four ways to be a great room-mate

Having a room-mate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. 9 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good room-mate rela?tionships sour.

Talk things out.

Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your room-mate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen room-mate relationships fall apart because some?thing happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their room-mates behind their backs. 10

Don't expect to be best friends.

Some room-mates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your room-mate, es?pecially when you first meet. 11 And if your room-mate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.

Ask before you take.

This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your room-mate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 12

Clean up after yourself.

This should go without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your room-mate in your clothes and gar?bage. Most people I've come across in college are messy.

13 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.

A. So you need to think twice before you help your room-ma?te out.

B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappi-ness.

C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.

D. You don't have to clean your room and keep it organized all the time.

E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your room-mate.

F. Sometimes you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.

G. Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your room-mate away.

A [2015 •河南八市重點(diǎn)高中教學(xué)質(zhì)量監(jiān)測(cè)] Around four years ago, I received a call from the princi?pal of our school as to the "Parents' View" talk the next morning. He asked me to speak to the group. After the call, my whole body became feverish and panicky. The time from his call to the next morning seemed like years. The whole night ? I could not sleep with many ominous apprehensions in mind. One of them was to call the principal with regret and tell him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some cour?age. 1 thought, if I missed this opportunity, surely the school would never invite me again to any of their programmes.

I reached the school in time. Before my turn came, my whole body was trembling. When my turn came, I started speaking, my heartbeat increased and my mouth went dry. I wasn't even able to read the written speech properly. I was not aware of where I was standing and what I was reading. That was the day when I realized my biggest weakness―pub?lic speaking.

After my speech, I met with the principal and explained what had happened to me. He told me that this happened to everyone. Even great speakers faced the same thing when they started. He suggested that I come again next time.

Around one month later, I was invited to refer to a topic on motivation. This time I was feeling comfortable. My speech was appreciated not only by the principal as well as by the teachers, because I was able to get my idea across to them. They encouraged and praised my efforts.

After the speech was successfully delivered, I became more confident. I said to myself, "If I can speak in front of such a learned audience, like the principal who educates oth?ers, I can now speak in front of others, too."

I started delivering lectures in my plant, on various top?ics like self-motivation, personality development, personal excellence, spoken English and presentation skills. This has become a passion for me. I learned that everything is possible if we have the courage to take the first step.

  1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

2.The author had bad feelings before the speech because

A. he disliked the idea of giving a lecture

B.he had got a high fever before that

C.he regretted accepting the invitation

D.he feared he couldn't perform it properly

3.What does the underlined part "ominous apprehensions" in the first paragraph mean?

A.Unlucky opportunities.

B.Negative ideas.

C.Curious views.

D.Happy comments.

 4. What can we conclude from the passage?

A.Nothing is to be got without pains but poverty.

B.Knowledge makes humble, while ignorance makes proud.

C.A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

D.Necessity is the mother of invention.

A [2015 .北京市西城區(qū)高三一模]

I've always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situa?tion I've found myself in.

My mother once took me to a store when I was seven years old. She and I got to the checkout counter, and she real?ized she had forgotten a couple of things on her shopping list. She left me with the cart and ran off to get what she needed.

"I'll be right back," she said.

She was gone just a few minutes, but in that time, I had loaded all the things on the belt and everything was rung up. I was left staring at the cashier, who was staring at me. "Do you have money Tor me, son?" she said. "I'll need to be paid."

I didn't realize she was just trying to amuse herself. So I stood there, ashamed and embarrassed.

By the time my mum returned, I was angry. " You left me here with no money! This lady asked me for the money, but I had nothing to give her !"

Now that I'm an adult, you'll never catch me with less than $ 200 in my wallet. I want to be prepared in case I need it.

I've always admired people who are over-prepared. In college, I had a classmate named Norman. One day he was giving a presentation on an overhead projector and in the mid?dle of his talk, the light bulb(燈泡)on the projector blew out. We would have to wait ten minutes until someone found a new projector.

"It's Okay," he announced. "There's nothing to worry about.,,

We watched him walk over to his bag and pull something out. He had brought along a spare bulb for the overhead pro?jector. Who could even think of that?

I often tell my students, "When you go into the wilder?ness, the only thing you can depend on is what you take with you. ,, And essentially, the wilderness is anywhere but your home or office. So take money. Pack a light bulb. Be prepared.

D.       He predicted the bulb on the projector would blow out.

4. What do the two stories tell us?

On Friday, our teacher told us that there would an Eng?lish corner in front of our teaching building. I set about soon after the last class in the afternoon.

To my joy, the English corner had just been on for a few minute. I joined them on their talk. At first, I was afraid that my English was so poor and limit that I couldn't follow them or make myself understand. I was also afraid that anyone might laugh at me. But a smiling face here or an encouraging nod there soon put me at ease. Though I speak to them only in simple English that day, I believe in future I will make a great progress.
