Nowadays, many teenagers spend too many time on computers. The number of students who come to school in the morning are already completely exhausting. The cause of this is staying late at night playing computer games and chat with their friends online. Most of them don’t realize just how damaging to their healthy this is, let alone the effect it has on their grades. I recently read an article about the damage that playing computer games are doing to kids. The article claimed for that lots of the games kids play are extremely harmful. It said that at best they are turning teens into dull people which have no social life and at worst into potential killer!

【題目】Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

The view that the spirit of adventure no longer has any scope for its enterprise seems, at first glance, depressingly true. The highest mountains have been scaled; the deepest seas plumbed. Maps today no longer contain huge blanks marked "Unknown Territory", nor do they make random guesses at the shapes of 1 land-masses. All major journeys of exploration to 2 the true shape and nature of the globe have been made in the past. It was left to us to fill in the details with 3 which once would have been considered impossible. The gaps have been 4. What next?

The obvious answer, of course, is that man is now looking upwards into space. Discoveries are being made at such a tremendous rate that even authors of science-fiction are finding it difficult to keep up with them and have to tax their imagination to invent bigger and better space-craft. Satellites sending signals as they swing round our globe have become 5.

Astronauts have successfully landed on the moon and its entire surface has been photographed. The information that satellites may provide fueling stations for manned rockets no longer strikes us as preposterous. If thirty years ago, a scientist has urged that we send messages into outer space in the hope of receiving an answer, he would have been regarded as either irresponsible or mad. Now, anything seems 6.

From dreams like these, we return to earth with a bump. Trips into space are all very well, but they are not for us; we must 7 ourselves with our own, much-traveled world. The earth itself is the training-ground for adventurous spirits, for "adventure" need not mean the seeking out of something new. A person can be called adventurous when he finds out something for himself, and it does not matter how many times the discovery has been made before. No one would say that men who set out now to cross the forbidding Antarctic are less enterprising than their predecessors who tried to do the same thing. The little boy who climbs the small hill that 8 his town, or even he who tries to climbs and fails, has precisely the same spirit that led Hillary to climb Everest. For the bold spirit and inquiring mind, there are inexhaustible possibilities. So long as there are people willing to 9 places that are well-known, there will be those who will, one day, set foot on remote and 10 shores.

Classical Roman drama

Following the expansion of the Roman Republic into several Greek territories between 270-240 BC, Rome encountered Greek drama. From the later years of the republic and by means of the Roman Empire, theatre spread west across Europe and reached England; Roman theatre was more varied, extensive and sophisticated than that of any culture before it.

While Greek drama continued to be performed throughout the Roman period, the year 240 BC marks the beginning of regular Roman drama. From the beginning of the empire, however, interest in full-length drama declined in favor of a broader 1 of theatrical entertainments. The first important works of Roman literature were the tragedies and comedies that Livius Andronicus wrote from 240 BC. Five years later, Gnaeus Naevius also began to write drama. No plays from either writer have survived. Andronicus was most appreciated for his tragedies and Naevius for his comedies; their successors(繼任者) tended to be 2 at one or the other, which led to a(n) 3 of the subsequent development of each type of drama.

By the beginning of the 2nd century BC, drama was firmly 4 in Rome and an association of writers had been formed. The Roman comedies that have survived are all “fabula palliate” (comedies based on Greek subjects) and come from two dramatists: Plautus and Terence. In re-working the Greek 5, the Roman comic dramatists abolished the role of the chorus(合唱) in dividing the drama into episodes and 6 musical accompaniment to its dialogue. The action of all scenes is set in the street and its complications often follow from eavesdropping(偷聽).

Plautus, the more popular of the two, wrote between 205 and 184 BC and twenty of his comedies survive; people 7 him for the wisdom of his dialogue and his use of various poetic meters. All of the six comedies that Terence wrote between 166 and 160 BC have survived; the 8 of his plots, in which he often combined several Greek stories, was sometimes criticized, but his double-plots enabled a sophisticated presentation of contrasting human behavior. No early Roman tragedy survives, though it was highly 9 in its day; historians know of three early tragedians—Quintus Ennius, Marcus Pacuvius, and Lucius Accius.

From the time of the empire, the work of two tragedians survives—one is an unknown author, while the other is the philosopher Seneca. Nine of Seneca’s tragedies survive, all of which are tragedies from Greek stories. Historians do not know who wrote the only extant example of the fabula praetexta (tragedies based on Roman subjects), Octavia, but in former times it was mistakenly attributed to Seneca due to his appearance as a(n) 10 in the tragedy.

Last week I noticed Jack coughing on our math class. See this, I offered to take him to a clinic. There the doctor asked Jack how he had coughed sometimes for long time. Jack nodded his head immediate. The doctor then wrote a prescription with instruction on how to take the Chinese medicine. When Jack tasted the medicine, he almost brings it up. I comforted him with an old saying “Good medicine for health tastes bitter to the mouth”. Jack managed to swallow them unwillingly. But when he had recovered three days later, he felt amazing at the effect of the Chinese medicine.

【題目】 Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

If you can’t seem to catch enough Z’s during the week, you’re not alone. But bad things happen to your body when you’re sleep-deprived, not least of which is weight gain. Well, here’s some good news: Sleeping in on the weekend to make up for sleep lost during the week is 1 with lower body mass index (BMI), according to a study published in the Oxford University Press journal Sleep.

The researchers, a collaboration of scientists based in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Republic of Korean, sought to determine if what they refer to as “catch-up sleep” 2 body mass index (BMI) in the general population. To do so, they conducted face-to-face interviews of a random sampling of 2,156 adults, comparing their sleep habits with their BMI scores. The 932 participants who slept in — “catch-up sleepers” (people who sleep longer on the weekend than on weekdays by approximately two hours) had a(n) 3 lower BMI than the other subjects. What’s more, every additional hour of catch-up sleep was linked with a decrease in BMI.

As to why sleeping in on weekends can lead to weight loss, one of the study co-authors, Robert Thomas, MD, MMSc, of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, 4 Reader’s Digest of the “substantial(大量的) experimental and epidemiological(流行病學(xué)的) data that short sleep contributes to weight gain.” He notes, “our best 5 as researchers are that there are balances to be kept, and the body can adjust and 6 within reason. Catch-up sleep allows the basic balance to be maintained.”

Although the study showed significant differences in BMI with the 7 of two or more hours of catch-up sleep, Dr. Thomas points out that there are “substantial individual differences,” such that the benefit we get from those extra hours will vary 8 on how much sleep each of us generally needs. “To determine your optional sleep, you can track the time spent sleeping on nights when there is no need to wake up to an alarm,” suggests Liza Baker, a health coach at Simply Health Coaching. That tells you about how many hours of sleep your body likes to get, since it 9 greatly across the population, from just 4 to 5 hours to 9 to 10 hours.

So can you actually lost weight by sleeping in on the weekend? Only if you’re paying off a sleep 10 from the week, according to the result of this study. It helps if you’re also eating less, Dr. Thomas adds.

【題目】 During his school's “College Colours Day”, a fourth-grade boy in Florida, who dreams to become a student of the University of Tennessee, wanted to wear a shirt of the university, but he didn't have one. His teacher, Laura Snyder, suggested that he should wear an orange shirt to show his spirit.

When the day finally arrived, the boy was so excited to show his shirt-an orange one with a piece of paper attached to it, on which was his homemade design of the UT logo.

But by lunch time, the spirited fan was in tears. Some girls bullied (霸凌) him and made fun of his design that he had pinned to his shirt. Back to Snyder 's room, he put his head on desk and was crying, devastated.

In hopes of raising the boy's spirits, Snyder planned on buying him an official University of Tennessee T-shirt, and asked friends online if they had contacts with the university who could “make it a little extra special for him.”

The post immediately went viral and Snyder was contacted by the University of Tennessee informing her that they wanted to send the boy a care package of swag and apparel(服裝) in support of him.

The story, however, didn't end here. The University of Tennessee said it was turning his “U.T.” design into an official T-shirt and had pre-sold more than 50,000 shirts online. The university won't profit from the shirts: It is donating the money to a charity dedicated to (致力于) getting rid of bullying of all forms.

“When I told him that his design was being made into a real shirt and people wanted to wear it, his jaw dropped," said Snyder. “He had a big smile on his face, walked taller, and I could tell his confidence grew!”

In recognition of the fourth-grader's spirit, the university has also extended an offer of honorary admission for him to join the Class of 2032. In addition, he has been awarded a four-year scholarship if he decides to attend UT in 2028 and meets admission requirements.

1How did the boy react to his school's “College Colours Day”?

A.He prepared for it with a creative design.

B.He dreamed of winning a prize on the day.

C.He was afraid of being laughed at on the day.

D.He was shy of joining it without a university shirt.

Nothing would have made me happier than knowing the International Olympic Committee has awarded the 2022 Winter Olympic Games to Beijing at its 128th session in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

Fourteen years ago, I was in Moscow covering the IOC's 112th session in Moscow, 1 I witnessed Beijing's successful bid for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Seven years later, I covered the 2008 Olympic Games as an accredited journalist.

Indeed, Beijing got a facelift, in many aspects, as the 2008 Games' host. As it becomes the first city ever 2 (host) both the Summer and Winter Olympics, I couldn't help wondering 3 to expect from the Games this time? Here is my wish list:

Permanent blue skies

Efforts to curb pollutions ahead of the 2008 Games dramatically improved the air quality in Beijing, at least for a while. I still remember how clear the sky was during the 2008 Paralympic Games that opened two weeks after the Olympic Games 4 (end) . Sadly, pollution continued to haunt Beijing afterwards, 5 a large extent neutralizing the 2008 efforts.

Once again, expectations are high 6 staging the Winter Olympic Games will push Beijing to reduce pollution and improve the air quality more sincerely and effectively.

Such efforts will not only be made in Beijing but in neighboring Hebei province and Tianjin municipality as well, 7 suggested by a development action plan to integrate the three places. Hopefully, blue skies will become a regular feature even after the Games.

Better transportation

Although Beijing is the host city of the 2022 Winter Games, Chongli county of Zhangjiakou in Hebei will host some of the snow events. I was there once a couple of years ago for skiing, and I had to spend 10 long hours on a congested winding road in the mountains on my way back because the highway was closed after heavy snow.

The nightmarish experience stopped me from making 8 attempt to go skiing in Chongli, 9 I believe boasted the best facilities for winter sports in North China at that time. It is a pleasure to learn that a high-speed railway linking Beijing and Zhangjiakou is in the works, 10 (shorten) the travel time from an average 4 hours to 50 minutes.
