I just finished taking an evening class at Stanford. The last lecture was on the mindbody connection―the relationship between stress and disease. The speaker (head of psychiatry (精神病學) at Stanford) said, among other things, one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman, whereas for a woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture (培育) her relationships with her girlfriends. At first everyone laughed, but he was serious.

Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more serotonin一a neurotransmitter (神經(jīng)傳遞素) that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being. Women share feelings whereas men often form relationships around activities. They rarely sit down with a buddy (伙伴) and talk about how they feel about certain things or how their personal lives are going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars? Yes. Fishing, hunting, golf? Yes. But their feelings? Rarely. Women do it all of the time. We share from our souls with our sisters, and evidently that is very good for our health. He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym.

There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends,we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged―not true. In fact,he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking! So every time you hang out to schmooze (閑談) with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health! We are indeed very very lucky. So let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidently it's very good for our health.

T-shirts Out; Uniforms In School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across theU. S. A. That's no sur?prise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (標記) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wear?ing the " wrong" clothes.

Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule―wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers;school uniforms tear those barriers down.

As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform,he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.

Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's "creativity". First,as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality (個性) .They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.

(   ) 7. According to the passage, what is the theme of uniforms in general?

   A. They can prevent the wearers from being laughed at.

   B. They will help the wearers keep their duties in mind.

   C. They are seen as a symbol of power.

   D. They help to tear those barriers down.

(   ) 8. Some people are against school uniforms because         .

   A. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms

   B. they believe that uniforms will make students less creative

Every profession or trade, every art,and every science has its technical vocabulary. Differ?ent occupations, however, differ widely in the character of their special vocabularies. In trades and handicrafts, and other vocations (職業(yè)) ,like farming and fishery, that have occupied great numbers of men from remote times, the technical vocabulary,is very old. It consists largely of native words,or of borrowed words that have worked themselves into the very fiber (質(zhì)地) of our language. Hence, though highly technical in many particulars, these vocabularies are more familiar in sound, and more generally understood, than most other technicalities. The special dialects of law, medicine, divinity (神學) ,and philosophy have also,in their older strata (層面) ,become pretty familiar to cultivated persons and have contributed much to the popular vocabulary. Yet every vocation still possesses a large body of technical terms that remain essen?tially foreign, even to educated speech. And the proportion has been much increased in the last fifty years, particularly in the various departments of natural and political science and in the me?chanic arts. Here new terms are coined with the greatest freedom and abandoned with indiffer?ence when they have served their turn. Most of the new coinages are confined (受限制在) to spe?cial discussions, and seldom get into general literature or conversation. Yet no profession is nowadays,as all professions once were,a close guild (行會) .

The lawyer, the physician, the man of science, the divine, associated freely with his fellowcreatures, and does not meet them in a merely professional way. Furthermore, what is called " popular science”makes everybody acquainted with modern views and recent discoveries. Any important experiment, though made in a remote or provincial laboratory,is at once reported in the newspapers, and everybody is soon talking about it as in the case of the Roentgen rays (倫琴射線) and wireless telegraphy. Thus our common speech is always taking up new technical terms and making them commonplace (尋常的事物) .

(   ) 5. What does the underlined phrase "educated speech" mean?

   A. 教育演講'                        B. 教育報告

   C. 有教養(yǎng)的談吐   D. 有教育意義的發(fā)言

(   ) 6. In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of technical terms in the terminology (專門術語) of

   A. fishery   B. farming

   C. government   D. sports

(   ) 7. What does the last sentence of the passage imply?

   A. Topics for common speech often involve the latest new technical terms.

   B. People don't take up any new technical terms which are none of their business.

   C. The topics for common speech are always making something new.

   D. New technical terms can enter our common speech by way of making them sim?ple.

(   ) 8. The author's main purpose in the passage is to

   A. describe a phenomenon   B. propose a solution

   C. be entertaining   D. argue a belief
