Last Saturday on the way to the mall, two children, a boy and a girl, came running towards me with bottles on their hands, asking if I wanted bottled water. It was a surprising gesture. I was wondering if they were doing fund-raising. I knelt and asked them where their parents were and how much a bottle of water cost. Then two adult women came up to me explaining what the children were doing. “We are teaching the children to give without anything in return. We are teaching people to accept without giving in return. ”
Two mothers had bought bottled water and placed a sticker(小貼紙) on all bottles with five different quotes(引述):
1. Smile at everyone. You’ll never know when someone may need it.
2. If Plan A does not work, there are 25 more letters in the alphabets.
3. Have a thirst for life. Every day is filled with possibilities.
4. In your thirst for knowledge, be sure you don’t drown in all the information.
5. Dig your well before you’re thirsty.
The bottle I have has quoted No.5. A sudden change of attitude opened up between me, the mothers and the children. We are no longer strangers to each other. We were having such a great time chatting and I ended up helping them give away the rest of the bottled water.
One young lady was so thankful that she happily accepted the water and said it was the best thing that happened to her all day since she had a bad day at work. A man refused and walked away saying “No, thanks”. A couple kept on bowing to us in gratitude. When it was all done, the children and I were giving each other high-five. It was so much fun. I think I had more fun doing this than the mothers and the children.
1.How did the author feel when he was offered bottled water?
A. Embarrassed.B. Surprised.C. Excited.D. Disappointed.
2.Different quotes were placed on the bottles to ________.
A. inspire others to think positively
B. show how rich and colorful our life is
C. encourage people to get more bottled water
D. explain why at times abandonment is necessary facing trouble
3.What did the author do after chatting with them?
A. Bought the rest of the bottled water.
B. Gave away some money for charity.
C. Decided to meet with them regularly.
D. Joined them in being kind to strangers.
4.What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. Children had more fun doing this than adults.
B. This random (隨機(jī)的) act of kindness is warmly welcomed.
C. People responded quite differently to this activity.
D. The author learned a lot from this random act of kindness.

For people with thousands of pages to read, speed reading seems like manna (甘露) from heaven. In addition, speed reading helps lighten the load of information you have to absorb since it provides a filter that you can use in screening all bits of information before you approach it.
1. Examining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension. Thorough reading may no longer be necessary in some cases, such as when you only need an outline of a certain document.
Another skill that can ease the burden of a reader is the ability to read words in blocks. Make sure you do not spend too long on a certain block. 2. This will also make reading less tiresome and boring.
To master this important skill, you have to practice reading more and more words in a certain block at a time. A suggestion shared by some experts regarding this step is to increase the distance between you and the document you are reading. If you can read more and more words in one block, you can cut down on the time it usually takes you to read a certain text and you will be able to read more in a shorter period.
Readers should also practice reducing the number of times they go back to previous sections or blocks. Using a pointer such as the tip of a pencil or pen can also help to make the flow of your reading smoother and faster. 3. Thus, your speed in reading will largely depend on the speed of the movement of your pointer.
If you still find yourself confused about the topic even after you have finished reading the document, do not re-read right away. Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading. 4. Getting your own reading corner will also help.
5. Continue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned and soon, you'll achieve the reading speed that will work best for you.
A.In this technique, your eyes will follow the tip of the pointer.
B.This saves time and reduces the effort that you have to make.
C.Taking a short break first is recommended before reading the material again.
D.As a final note, the most important point is consistent and deliberate practice.
E.Your invaluable time can be saved if you can have your reading speed doubled.
F.The first step to increase your reading speed is to identify the specific information you need.
G.Reducing the time you spend on a specific number of words in a block will make no big difference.

With alarming regularity, we read about oil tankers(油輪) having accidents near land and the terrible consequences of the oil spills(泄露) on people, nature, and the environment.
Millions of dollars have been used in developing special chemicals to help dismiss the spills and to clean up the animals, beaches, and land spoiled by the oil.Unfortunately, when many of these chemicals are used, more damage is caused to the environment, especially to lives in the sea.
Of all of today’s environmental disasters, an oil spill may actually be one of the least serious.Although oil is poisonous, it is a natural material. In the end, it breaks down naturally. There are, of course, long-term effects, but it is usually more serious in the short term.
Nature by itself works better than chemical materials, but when there is a spill we demand that governments act immediately with as much hi-tech knowledge as possible. In 1967 the tanker Torrey Canyon sank off the Sicily Isles near the coast of England and spilled 120,000 tones of oil into the ocean. If you go there today, you will find it hard to see any sign that it ever happened.
Governments seem to accept the risk of transporting millions of tons of oil by ship every day so that we can fill up our cars and drive around and cause even more environmental damage.Interestingly, the biggest companies in the world produce cars, and the next biggest supply the gasoline to make them run!
We should be thinking more about reducing our dependency on oil.Governments should be encouraging research into new technologies, such as cars run by solar power, electricity, hydrogen, and so on.Much of this research has, in the past, been held back by the oil, gas, and coal.
If the world’s millions of cars were 10% more efficient— and the industry could easily produce cars at least twice as efficient — we would need many fewer tankers crossing the oceans each year.If this happened, the risks of oil spills would be reduced, and the air we breathe would be cleaner and fresher, too.
1.What is the passage mainly talking about?
A.Oil spills pollution.
B.What oil pollution is.
C.Oil tanker accidents.
D.How to reduce oil pollution.
2.How does the author support the idea that oil spills are not as serious as people believe?
A.By having a discussion .
B.By making an argument.
C.By giving an example.
D.By drawing a diagram.
3.What does the underlined word “risk” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Transportation depending more on oil.
B.Poisonous oil breaking down naturally.
C.Millions of tons of oil spilling into the sea.
D.More environmental damage being caused.
4.Which suggestion is made for reducing oil tank accidents according to the passage?
A.We should build safer oil tankers in the near future
B.We should develop new technologies to cut oil use
C.Tankers should not be allowed to sail near the coastlines.
D.Countries should build more oil pipelines under the sea.

A man steps on what seems like solid ground but discovers with horror that the ground is giving way beneath his feet. The man struggles desperately, but he is trapped. He cannot escape. Slowly he sinks deeper and deeper until at last he is gone, buried in the treacherous earth. The solid ground was solid only in appearance. It was actually quicksand, which is a deep mass of fine sand mixed with water.
How is quicksand formed? Water pushes up from below the surface and is held by the sand. The grains of sand are forced apart by the water. They cannot hold any weight. The subsurface water may have come from a spring, a river or a stream. Sometimes pools of water near beaches become filled with sand. When the soil under these pools does not allow for good drainage(排水), the sand can become stretches of quicksand.
Is it true that a man who steps into quicksand is doomed to(注定) die? No, for men have fought their way from quicksand to firm land again. It is panic(恐慌) that creates the condition that can result in death, for the more a person struggles, the worse matters become. Quick movements will make the sand give way temporarily(臨時地), but then it rushes and settles solidly around the body. A man trapped in quicksand should either lie back, or not move at all, except to stretch out his arms. When the weight of the sand his body has displaced equals his weight, he will stop sinking. With feet held still, and with slow movements of the arms, as in the backstroke in swimming men can manage to roll to safety and reach firm ground.
1.What is quicksand?
A. A piece of solid ground mixed with water.
B. A pool near the beach filled with water.
C. A deep mass of fine sand mixed with water.
D. A piece of sinking land in the water.
2.The underlined part “giving way” in the first paragraph probably means ________.
A. shaking and moving
B. allowing others to be first
C. rising to the top
D. breaking or breaking into pieces
3.A person stops sinking when the weight of his body is ________ that of the sand his body has displaced.
A. greater thanB. the same as
C. half ofD. close to
4.Men can manage to reach firm ground by ________.
A. holding feet still and moving arms slowly
B. lying back calmly and moving arms frequently
C. stretching out arms and swimming quickly
