Climate change, pollution, overuse of water and development are killing some of the world’s most famous rivers including China’s Yangtze.India’s Ganges and Africa’s Nile.WWF said on Tuesday. At the global launch of its report “World’s Top 10 Rivers at Risk”,the group said many rivers could dry out, affecting hundreds of millions of people and killing unique aquatic(水生的)life.
“If these rivers die, millions will lose their livelihoods, biodiversity(生物多樣性)will be destroyed on a massive scale, there will be less fresh water and agriculture, resulting in less food security,”said.Rayi Singh, secretary—general of WWF—India. The report launched ahead of “World Water Day” today, also cited the Rio Grande in the United States, the Mekong and Indus in Asia,Europe’s Danube, La Plata in South America and Australia’s Murray—Darling as in need of greater protection.
Rivers are the world’s main source of fresh water and WWF says about half of the available supply is already being used up.Dams have destroyed habitats and cut rivers off from their flood plains.while climate change could affect the seasonal water flows that feed them, the report said.Fish populations, the top source of protein and overall life support for hundreds of thousands of communities worldwide, are also being threatened, it found..The Yangtze basin is one of the most polluted rivers in the world because of decades of heavy industrialization, damming and huge influxes(流入)of sediment(積淀)from land conversion.
Climate change, including higher temperatures, also means serious consequences for fishery productivity, water supply and political security in Africa’s arid Nile basin.Tributaries(支流)flowing into the Ganges are drying up because of irrigation,WWF said.

The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fad(一時的風(fēng)尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” –-- and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer --- which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet ---used the title in 2008. A lovely bear --- popular in the US and UK --- that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version(簡裝本) of London’s Independent newspaper was started last week under the name “i”.
In general, single-letter prefixes(前綴) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce(電子商務(wù)) first came into use.
Most “i” products are targeted at (針對)young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s“ i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.
But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition(定義),” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability (輕便) .”adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade(十年).
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.
小題1:People use iPlayer to __________.
A.listen to musicB.make a call
C.watch TV programs online D.read newspapers
小題2:We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is designed for _________.
A.young readersB.old readersC.fashionable womenD.engineers
小題3:The underlined word “ambiguous” means “__________”.
A.popularB.uncertainC.clear D.unique
小題4: Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are __________.
A.portableB.environmentally friendlyC.a(chǎn)dvancedD.recyclable
小題5:The writer suggests that __________.
A.“i” products are often of high quality
B.iTeddy is alive bear
C.the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the products
D.the popularity of “i” products may not last long

Ethiopia has greatly reduced its death rates for children under the age of five years during the last two decades, new UN statistics show. The report says Ethiopia has cut the number of child deaths, by two thirds or so, to 68 per 1,000 births compared to that in 1990.
The government owed the improved figures to its growing economy. Despite the reduction, the UN Children's Fund said Ethiopia needed to do much more to improve health facilities(設(shè)施) for pregnant women.
Ethiopia is one of Africa's poorest states, although it has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years and is one of the continent's leading coffee producers. Its economy centers around agriculture, which in turn relies on rainfall.
The BBC's Emmanuel Igunza in the capital, Addis Ababa, says Ethiopia was once representative of poor nutrition in Africa. But the latest UNICEF(聯(lián)合國兒童基金會) figures show Ethiopia is one of the few African countries on the path to realizing the development goal of reducing child death rates, he says.
Ethiopia's Health Minister Kesetebirhan Admasu said increasing family incomes had helped improve people's health. "This has also resulted in better nutrition for children and women; this has translated into better medical conditions —— all these have a direct or indirect influence on the survival of children," he told BBC Africa. He said the government has also been "aggressively expanding its primary health care network".
"We have now 93% coverage( 覆蓋) of one health centre for 25,000 people, which basically means one health facility within a 7km area," he said.
小題1:How many in 1000 births would die in Ethiopia in 1990?
A.a(chǎn)bout 680B.a(chǎn)bout 330C.a(chǎn)bout 68D.a(chǎn)bout 200

B.now the health care network is perfect in Ethiopia
C.93% of the 25,000 people enjoy health centers in Ethiopia
D.the government has been taking active measures to improve people's health

JIUQUAN, China—China’s Shenzhou-9 spacecraft blasted off(點火升空)at 6:37 pm Saturday, from a remote desert in western China, sending a crew of three, including the country’s first female astronaut, into space.
The successful launch, powered by a Long March 2F rocket, was shown live on state television Saturday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert in western China.
The Chinese astronauts will complete the country’s first manned space docking mission(載入太空對接任務(wù)), an important step in Beijing’s ambitious plan to build a permanent space station by 2020. Possible future missions could include sending a man to the moon.
The crew is expected to spend more than 10 days in space and dock with the Tiangong-1 space lab module, which China launched in September 2011. Two of them will live and work inside the module to test its life-support systems, while the third will remain in the capsule to deal with any unexpected emergencies.

WASHINGTON—Laura Straub is a very worried woman. Her job is to find families for French teenagers who expect to live with American families in the summer.
It’s not easy, even desperate.
“We have many children left to place: 40 out of 75,” said Straub, who works for a Paris-based foreign exchange programme called LEC. When exchange programmes started 50 years ago, family life was more accommodating. For one thing, more mothers stayed home.
But now, increasing numbers of women work outside the home. Exchange-student programmes have struggled in recent years to sign up host families for the 30,000 teenagers who annually come from abroad to spend their academic year in the United States, as well as the thousands more who participate in summer programmes.
School systems in many parts of the US, unhappy about accepting non-taxpaying students, have also strictly limited the number of exchange students they accept. At the same time, the idea of hosting foreign students is becoming less exotic.
In searching for host families, who usually receive no pay, exchange programmes are increasingly broadening their appeals to include everyone who has the ability to do it.
“We are open to many different types of families,” said Vickie Weiner, eastern regional director for ASSE, a 25- year-old programme that sends about 30,000 teenagers on academic year exchange programmes worldwide.
“For elderly people, exchange students keep us young; they really do!” said Jean Foster, who is hosting 16-year-old Nina Porst from Denmark.
