Three out four visits were to fast food restaurants, like McDonald’s. Fast casual is still a small percentage of restaurant visits, but it has developed fast. 【題目】Cleaning your plate may not help feed hungry children today, but the timeworn advice of mothers everywhere may help reduce food waste from the farm to the fork, help the environment and make it easier to feed the world’s growing population.

Hard data still being collected, but experts in Chicago said about 30% to 50% of the food produced in the world goes uneaten. The average American throws away 33 pounds of food each monthabout $40 worth, which means each person throws away almost 400 pounds of food. The US Department of Agriculture says that 23% of eggs and an even higher percentage of produce ends up in the trash.

“We forget we have all these fresh fruits and vegetables, and at the end of the week we have to throw them away”, said Esther Gove, a mother of three young children in South Berwick, Maine. “Now, I don’t buy as much fresh produce as I used to.”

But the effect of food waste arrives far beyond the kitchen. Agriculture is the world’s largest user of water, a big consumer of energy and major emitter of greenhouse gases during production. Experts say reducing waste is a simple way to cut stress on the environment and can ease pressure on farmers, who will be called on to feed an expected 9 billion people around the world in 2050, compared with nearly 7 billion today.

No matter how sustainable (可持續(xù)的) farming is, if the food’s not getting eaten, it’s not sustainable and it’s not a good use of our resources. In richer nations, fruit and vegetables end up in the trash because they aren’t pretty enough to meet companies’ standards, have gone bad in a home refrigerator or aren’t eaten at a restaurant. In developing countries, much food spoils before it gets to market due to poor roads and lack of refrigeration. High food prices are another reason, since some people can’t afford the food that’s produced.

A. is you mother’s best advice for you

B. can solve certain problems for the world

C. can help feed hungry children all over the world

A. user B. finder C. protector D. producer

3What is a sustainable and convenient way for a customer in a restaurant?

C. Ordering less and feeling hungry after leaving.

D. Ordering more and leaving the untouched alone.

4Which of the following topics will follow the text?

A. More examples of food waste. B. Ways to reduce food waste.

【題目】At the end of every year, Time picks the best 25 inventions that are “making the world better and smarter”. Here we have picked three of this year’s inventions that could be a part of your life in the near future.

The levitating(懸浮的) lightbulb

This special lightbulb was invented by US artist and scientist Simon Morris. He got the idea of making a lightbulb float from hoverboards(懸浮滑板),which he used to dream of having as a kid.

But the floating is not the most amazing part. The rejection force between the opposite ends of the magnets(磁鐵),which were put in the bottom of the bulb and in the wooden base, does the job. What’s new here is a technology called induction (電磁感應(yīng)). It allows the lightbulb to get power from the base even they are not in contact.

Shoes that tie themselves

They’re not what you think-shoelaces that tie themselves in the way we tie them. Instead, the new shoes have small motors that control their laces. When you step in them, your feet will hit a sensor(傳感器)in the shoes and the motor will automatically tighten the laces.

But the shoes weren’t just designed for lazy people’s needs. They could actually give athletes an advantage during competition. They are also useful for people who cannot move their arms or fingers easily.

The no-touch thermometer

Taking your body temperature usually means putting a thermometer (體溫計(jì)) in your armpits (腋窩) and staying still for minutes. It may be easy for you, but it’s an impossible task for little kids.

Now, with the new thermometer, users can simply put it 2.5 centimeters from a patient’s forechead and press the button, and it can get the reading in two seconds.

1The levitating lightbulb is special in that ________.

A. floating is the most amazing part of the levitating lightbulb

B. the inventor of the levitating lightbulb is more than a scientist

C. it makes use of the rejection force between opposite ends of magnets

D. induction allows the lightbulb to get power even when unconnected with the base

2How is the no-touch thermometer different from other ones?

A. It makes it easier to take kid’s temperature.

B. You need wait two minutes for the reading.

C. You don’t need to press the button.

D. It should be put in one’s armpit.
