【題目】The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid --- we simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink.

However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basilisk Basilicus basilicus, a lizard(蜥蜴)native to Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the waters surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, well need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate hitting.”

But fortunately there is an alternative: cornflour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water (and it does take a lot), you can create a non-Newtonian liquid that doesnt behave like normal water. Now if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles(粒子)in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick liquid of cornflour.

Fun though all this may sound, its still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink --- and take a shower afterward!

1What do we know about Basilicus basilicas from the passage?

A. It is light enough to walk on water.

B. Its huge feet enable it to stay above water.

C. It can run across water at a certain speed

D. Its unique skin keeps it from getting wet in water

2What is the function of the cornflour according to the passage?

A. To create a thick liquid.

B. To turn the water into solid.

C. To help the liquid behave normally.

D. To enable the water to move rapidly.

3What is the authors attitude toward the idea of humans walking on water?

A. It is risky but beneficial.

B. It is interesting and worth trying

C. It is crazy and cannot become a reality

D. It is impractical though theoretically possible

It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the waters surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward.推測可知,這種蜥蜴能在水面行走是因為速度快(每秒鐘達到20步)。選擇 C。

2A推理判斷。根據(jù)文章第三段第2,3行:you can create a non-Newtonianliquid that doesnt behave like normal water. Now ,if the surface of the water is hit hard enough可知這種cornflour會讓水面上形成一個

3D推理判斷。從第二段it does take a lot ,最后一段its still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. 等句推斷,借助增稠劑實現(xiàn)人類在水面行走,理論上可行但真正實現(xiàn)很難做到。說明作者認為這是不實際的。D項。

Normally, if you are traveling 【6】 , the price of the round trip tickets would be almost the 【7】 with that of two separate tickets. If you are traveling internationally, the airline companies usually give you a big 【8】 . For example, traveling from the U. S. to Beijing is about 900 dollars. But the round trip tickets are only about 1300 dollars or 【9】 less. So you can make a decision before you start to do the 【10】 .

One way to get cheap round trip tickets is to 【11】 the price between one way and round trip. Sometimes you may get more discounts for two one-way airline tickets. You should know 【12】 to compare.

【13】 way to get cheap round trip tickets is to get them from a 【14】 agency. Since the travel agency has corporate relations with a lot of airline companies, their price would be much lower because they 【15】 tickets for a lot of groups. o you can 【16】 a travel agency and tell them the day of your leaving and 【17】 . But the thing is actually that you are not going to travel with them. In this way, you just have to give the travel agency a small amount of 【18】 . So if the total price from the travel agency is lower than you 【19】 it directly from airline companies, then you can 【20】 to do it from the travel agency. If the price is higher than the "retail price", then you can do it by yourself. You can call the travel agency and consult their price.

【題目】I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it’s like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes.

At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as a post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement—jobs, research papers, awards—was viewed through the lens of gender (性別) politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus (相對于) right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind.

Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations(挑釁): I don’t talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn’t want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don’t study sociology or political theory.

Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don’t dismiss those concerns. Still, I don’t tell them “war” stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that’s a sight worth talking about.

【1】Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?

A. She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields.

B. She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination.

C. She is not good at telling stories of the kind.

D. She finds space research more important.

【2】From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would owe the author’s failures to ________.

A. the very fact that she is a woman

B. her involvement in gender politics

C. her over-confidence as a female astrophysicist

D. the burden she bears in a male-dominated society

【3】What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research?

A. Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.

B. Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.

C. People’s stereotyped attitude toward female scientists.

D. Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurtured.

【4】Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?

A. Female students no longer have to bother about gender issues.

B. Her students’ performance has brought back her confidence.

C. Her female students can do just as well as male students.

D. More female students are pursuing science than before.

【5】What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?

A. Women students needn’t have the concerns of her generation.

B. Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.

C. Women can balance a career in science and having a family.

D. Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.

【題目】People aren’t walking any more--- if they can figure out a way to avoid it.

I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn’t in any hurry, either, I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorosis.

It is an illness to which I had thought myself immune, for I was bred in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as a sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced –and beat—a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty.

Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrhams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise. A person who avoids exercise is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise--- the most familiar and natural of all. It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flower, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world. He cannot learn in a car.

The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach Nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green.

I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting.

【1】What was life like when the author was young?

A. people often walked 25 miles a day

B. People usually went around on foot.

C. People used to climb the Statue of Liberty.

D. people considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship.

【2】The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that ________.

A. middle-aged people like getting back to nature

B. people need regular exercise to keep fit

C. walking in nature helps enrich one’s mind

D. going on foot prevents heart disease

【3】What is compared to a steel river in Paragraph6?

A. A ray of traffic light B. A queue of cars

C. A flash of lightning D. A stream of people

【題目】Ask most people how they define the American Dream and chances are they’ll say, “Success.” The dream of individual opportunity has been home in American since Europeans discovered a “new world” in the Western Hemisphere. Early immigrants like Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur praised highly the freedom and opportunity to be found in this new land. His glowing descriptions of a classless society where anyone could attain success through honesty and hard work fired the imaginations of many European readers: in Letters from an American Farmer (1782) he wrote. We are all excited at the spirit of an industry which is unfettered (無拘無束的) and unrestrained, because each person works for himself We have no princes, for whom we toil (干苦力活),starve, and bleed: we are the most perfect society now existing in the world.” The promise of a land where “the rewards of a man’s industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor” drew poor immigrants from Europe and fueled national expansion into the western territories.

Our national mythology (神化) is full of illustration of the American success story. Theres Benjamin Franklin, the very model of the self-educated, self-made man, who rose from modest origins to become a well-known scientist, philosopher, and statesman. In the nineteenth century, Horatio Alger, a writer of fiction for young boys, became American’s best-selling author with rags-to-riches tales. The notion of success haunts us: we spend million every year reading about the rich and famous, learning how to “make a fortune in real estate with no money down,” and “dressing for success.” The myth of success has even invaded our personal relationships: today it’s as important to be “successful” in marriage or parenthoods as it is to come out on top in business.

But dreams easily turn into nightmares. Every American who hopes to “make it” also knows the fear of failure, because the myth of success inevitably implies comparison between the haves and the have-nots, the stars and the anonymous crowd. Under pressure of the myth, we become indulged in status symbols: we try to live in the “right” neighborhoods, wear the “right” clothes, eat the “right” foods. These symbols of distinction assure us and others that we believe strongly in the fundamental equality of all, yet strive as hard as we can to separate ourselves from our fellow citizens.

【1】What is the essence of the American Dream according to Crevecoeur?

A. People are free to develop their power of imagination.

B. People who are honest and work hard can succeed.

C. People are free from exploitation and oppression.

D. People can fully enjoy individual freedom.

【2】By saying the rewards of a mans industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor (Line 10, Para. 1), the author means __________ .

A. the more diligent one is, the bigger his returns

B. laborious work ensures the growth of an industry

C. a man’s business should be developed step by step

D. a company’s success depends on its employees’ hard work

【3】The characters described in Horatio Algers novels are people who ___________.

A. succeed in real estate investment

B. earned enormous fortunes by chances

C. became wealthy after starting life very poor

D. became famous despite their modest origins

【4】It can be inferred from the last sentence of the second paragraph that ____________.

A. business success often contributes to a successful marriage

B. Americans wish to succeed in every aspect of life

C. good personal relationships lead to business success

D. successful business people provide good care for their children

【5】What is the paradox (說法) of American culture according to the author?

A. The American road to success is full of nightmares.

B. Status symbols are not a real indicator of a person’s wealth.

C. The American Dream is nothing but an empty dream.

D. What Americans strive after often contradicts their beliefs.
