My Italian Grandmother was a wonderful woman. I always felt blessed growing up inher home a boy. She worked hard, laughed loud, and was never afraid of life threw at her.
When she fell and broke her hip in hereighties, my Dad (force) to admit that he could no longer take care of herat home. It was with a heavy heart Dad moved Grandmother into a nursinghome.
Our whole family gathered together for her90th birthday in the nursing home dining room. It was a wonderful celebrationof her life and the love we all had her.
Shortly after that birthday, however, lifegave her the (tough) challenge of all as age and illness started to takeher mind from her too. The Dementia (癡呆)grew worse and worse. At times when I visited her she didn't know I was.During one of these visits I was holding her hand while she slept. When sheawoke, her eyes stared at me and I could tell she didn't recognize . Shelooked down at my hand (hold) hers and instead of pulling hers away, shesmiled at me. Then she closed her eyes and went (peace) back to sleep. Icould see then that even though her mind didn't remember me, her spirit stillremembered love.

【答案】as;what;was forced;that;for;toughest;who;me;holding;peacefully
asa boy=when l was a boy。
③was forced 考查被動(dòng)語態(tài)。
④that 考查強(qiáng)調(diào)句型,即“Itis/was+被強(qiáng)調(diào)部分+that+其他成分”。本句被強(qiáng)調(diào)的是狀語with a heavyheart。
本句中,定語從句weall had __5__ her用來修飾先行詞love,將這個(gè)定語從句還原為簡單句,則為:we all had love __5__ her。表示“愛某人”,應(yīng)用have love for sb.,所以填介詞for。
my hand holding=myhand which was holding。

C
My students often tell me that they don't have "enough time" to do all their schoolwork.
My reply is often a brief "You have as much time as the president." I usually carry on a bit about there being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that "not enough time" is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.
Once in graduate school, I tried to prove to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, "That's irrelevant (無關(guān)的). What's important is the quality of your work." Since then I have had time to think carefully about the "hard worker" dodge (訣竅), and I have come to some conclusions- all relevant to the problem of how much time we have.
If you analyze the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of "time", which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the problem of "work" during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it's not how hard one works but the quality of the product that's important.
That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone's office: "Don't work harder. Work smarter." There is a lot of sense in that idea.
If you can't get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since "work" for students usually means "homework", the expression "work habits" should be read as "study habits".
Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies.

Dear Jack,

Im sorry to hear that you feel lonely in the new school, because you find hard to make friends. Now, Id like to offer you any advice.

Firstly, its normal for you to feel lonely because you were living in a new environment. Secondly, you should greet your classmates when met them on campus. Thirdly, it will be a good idea if you take an actively part in class activities, what can help them learn more about you. I believe you will be able to make new friends soon unless youre friendly to the others.

I hope the suggestion above will be helpful to you and everything will be fine with you for the future.

In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixtyone hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know too well how bad the traffic can be. “There're too many cars, and you can't move around a lot.”
Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (導(dǎo)航) system.
He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house.
“What's unique is that we use a lot of data that's currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what's going to happen in front of you when you leave home.”
Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just respond to current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give the fastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahahi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.
“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.”
Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.
(1)Drivers in Los Angeles were mentioned in order to ________.
A.show care for them
B.introduce their life
C.solve traffic problems
D.raise the topic
(2)What is unique about ClearPath?
A.It can use a lot of information all over the world.
B.It can ensure that you will never be late for work.
C.It helps drivers see clearly what happens on the road.
D.It helps drivers know the road conditions ahead of time.
(3)The underlined word “hits” in the fifth paragraph probably means ________.
A.have an accident
B.get to
C.turn left or right
D.collect traffic data
(4)What's Professor Shahabi's attitude toward his invention?
A.Disappointed.
B.Proud.

Since the one-baby policy (carry) out in China, Chinese families have been shrinking from one with over 10 members to the other with only three including parents and one baby. Things are usually out of our expectation. Apart from the benefits have been mentioned enough, small families are now beginning to have own problems. Because parents are having fewer children, they increasingly feel the need (control) the lives of those children. As a result, many children are becoming less (depend), determined and ambitious than in the past.
Parents today discourage their children from doing housework, extracurricular activities and socializing they fear it will interrupt their education. For example, when I was younger I wanted to learn the guitar my parents wouldn’t allow me because they believed it would distract me from my studies. They are happy as long as I perform (wonder) in my exams but don’t seem concerned about how I develop a person.
To some extent, I understand parents’ concerns, but I think they should love their children for they are, not what they want them to be. We deserve the chance to chase our own dreams and learn on our own. Even if we fail, we can learn from those failures.
