What will man be like in the future - in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.

Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity(容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.

Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.

But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.

Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and motions similar to our own.

1.The passage mainly tells us that __________.

A. Man’s life will be different in the future

B. future man will look quite different from us

C. man is growing taller and uglier as time passes

D. Man’s organs' functions will change

2.What serves as the evidence that man is changing?

A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had.

B. Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner.

C. Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.

D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.

3.The change in man’s size of the forehead is probably because __________.

A. he makes use of only 20% of the brain’s capacity

B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries

C. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on

D. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time

4.It is implied that __________.

A. human beings will become less attractive in the future

B. parts of our bodies will become poorer if they are not used often

C. human beings hope for a change in the future life

D. future life is always predictable

George claims that he read 53 books in 2014. My friend and I found this fairly unbelievable, considering he seems to have a pretty full schedule.

Anyway, it appears that I am on track to read 72 new books this year. But I've come to realize that this number can easily be skewed(扭曲). For instance, currently I am reading Rising Tide: The Story of the Mississippi Flood of 1927. This book is over 700 pages. It's going to take me the month of May (along with Harry Potter rereads; I can't read nonfiction while going to sleep). So my May average will be way off. However, when I read chick-lits (雞仔文學(xué), 都市女性文學(xué)), I can get those done in a day. I guess it all depends on what I choose to read.

In reality, reading is beneficial because it encourages us to slow down our thinking, and also to fully interpret someone else's experience. Reading keeps the mind sharp and expands a person’s vocabulary. We read to educate ourselves. We read to help ourselves. We read to escape our own lives and live in that of another for a little while.

My parents decided try a new Western restaurant last weekend, so I went with them. The evening started well and the menu looks good. Besides, I couldn't cut the beef because of my knife wasn't very good. For my dessert I had a apple pie but I didn't have a fork or a spoon so I ate them with my fingers! What a terribly experience!

It has always been thought that alcohol causes people to put on weight because it contains a lot of sugar, but new research suggests glass a day could form part a diet. Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put on weight; those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight.

A spokesman for the research team at Navarro University in Spain says, “Light to moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain.” The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol research reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularly that data do not clearly indicate if moderate drinking increases weight.

Boston University’s Dr. Harvey Finkel found that the biologic mechanisms(生物學(xué)機(jī)制)relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of moderate drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes(糖尿病), which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very obese people may be at lower risk of diabetes if they are moderate drinkers.

The group says alcohol provides calories that are quickly absorbed into the body and a enot stored in fat, and that this process could explain the differences in its effects from those of other foods. They agree that future research should be directed towards assessing the roles of different types of alcoholic drinks, taking into consideration drinking patterns and including the past tendency of participants to gain weight.

For now there is little evidence that consuming small to moderate amounts of alcohol on a regular basis increases one’s risk of becoming obese. What’s more, a study three years ago suggested that resveratrol, a compound present in grapes and red wine destroys fat cells.

1.The passage is mainly for those__________.

A. who produce wine

B. who have a drinking habit

C. who go on a diet

D. who are eager to lose weight

2.The underlined phrase“ in moderation” in the first paragraph means_________.

A. excitedly B. carefully

C. frequently D. properly

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Current data clearly show that moderate drinking increases weight.

B. Resveratrol is proved to increase the risk of becoming fat.

C. The research found moderate drinking has a strong protective effect.

D .The specific roles of different types of alcoholic drinks are very clear.

4.What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A. How to do some easy experiments.

B. How to reduce the calories contained in wine.

C. How to prove the finding mentioned above.

D. How to make wine in a healthy way.
