Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.
Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.”
Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought!
Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent (漠然) to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have as its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.
It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.
I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants to take over the world!
1.The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the text ________.
A. better-knownB. more persuasive
C. better-organizedD. more interesting
2.An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because ________.
A. it is much cleverer than us
B. it would take over the world
C. it would see us just as material
D. it has the strong feeling of destroying us
3.How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics?
A. OptimisticB. SympathyC. DisappointedD. Regretful
4.What does the text mainly focus on?
A. The benefits of future robots.
B. The new applications of robots.
C. The concern for super intelligence.
D. The popularity of robots in the future.

One day, when I am walking in my neighborhood after supper, I saw wallet on the ground. I picked it up or opened it. I found there were several $100 bills in it but I didn’t know whom it belonged for as there was no information about the owners. Just as I was wondering how to deal with it, I saw a man look for something. I went to him and asked how he was trying to find. He said he had been lost his wallet. Then I asked him how many it was in it. I returned it to him after making sure the wallet was him. He couldn’t thank me enough.

Last winter, my classmates and I went to London to attending a winter camp. To better understand the history and culture of a city, we scheduled a “museum trip”. In Saturday morning we got up early and studied the map carefully to work out the route. One of my classmates suggested go there by bus to enjoy the street view. It was a long ride, so that we got off the double-decker bus, we seemed to lose way. The streets looked busy and strangely, and we have had to ask a passer-by for help. She pointed out the right direction and wished us a good day. Thanks to the friendly woman, we finally got to our destination. It took us some effort, however we witnessed the real beauty of the city. The experience also abled us to practise our English. What a terrific experience!

Usually, a wedding's main focus is on the bride and groom. However, one couple were upstaged by a huge brown bear that they invited to be a part of their special day.
Denis and Nelya, both 30, from Moscow, Russia, hired 21-stone Stepan to play the role of ringbearer — and he even turned up to their ceremony wearing a black bow tie.
The bear, which stands seven-foot tall, was very involved with the ceremony, even posing for photos with both bride and groom.
At one point he even acted as the registrar and joins paws with the couple as they professed their love for each other. Standing underneath a cream fabric canopy(華蓋) and surrounded by greenery, flowers and fruit, Stepan helped the couple on their wedding day.
Denis said, “We both knew Stepan is a very kind bear but still it is a huge, unpredictable animal so we were a bit scared, but still happy to be able to make our dream come true. It was a fantastic experience to have this photo shoot with Stepan. We will absolutely remember this day forever.”
Stepan the bear first found fame in May 2016, when a series of photos of the tame animal were published. He was adopted by Russian couple Svetlana and Yuriy Panteleenko aged just three months after being discovered by hunters in the forest, having lost his mother.
Svetlana said, “Stepan likes nothing more than to cuddle up with us on the sofa at night while we're watching television. He absolutely loves people and is a really sociable bear — despite what people might think, he is not aggressive at all. We have never been bitten by Stepan.”
1.The underlined word “upstage” in paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. attractB. over-dropC. biteD. surprise
2.What do we know about Stepan?
A. Stepan is not happy at all at the wedding ceremony.

Looking good can matter a lot when you are a teenager. Of course the budget(財(cái)政) matters a lot, too. Luckily, fashion trends (流行趨勢(shì)) in the UK mean that getting the right image doesn’t have to cost the earth. Here’s a quick guide to which looks are hot this year.
For girls, the 70s are back. Wide-legged jeans, platform shoes and skirts that reach the feet are again in fashion among UK teens, topped off with colored, shining eyeshadow. Girls can have fun mixing and matching bright shades. Colors like pink, orange and light yellow-green are all perfectly fit. Shorts and mini-skirts are still popular in cold weather. By wearing a pair of tights underneath ( 在..底下), girls can stay warm as well as fashionable in the winter.
How about boys? To look lively, fans of skateboards and snowboards can dress in skinny jeans accompanied by a T-shirt topped off with a baseball cap or a woolen hat. Music is often an inspiration for fashion, and hip-hop music fans like to dress in baggy jeans, T-shirts, baseball caps and sneakers. For those who can afford it, designer clothing is a must, especially if the logo is showing.
1.The underlined words “ cost the earth “ in Paragraph 1 probably mean ______.
A. be difficult B. be important
