5.Does stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact,it is an old wives tale that being upset all the time can result in premature graying. Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives tale could be true.
As one ages, the hairs on the head also age.In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear after a while. The joints wear and become stiff and skin wears and becomes wrinkled.Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens.
When new hairs are replaced, the color or pigment(色素)is also added to them. However,as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying.a(chǎn)nd genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty.
Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body.It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to suffer hair loss.It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there,is no sound evidence to support this.
On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link:between graying and a constant state of anxiety or,tension.Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations.

16.The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past.With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones,writing by hand has become something of a nostalgic (懷舊的) skill.However,while today's educators are using more and more technology in their teaching,many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful-both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks-both on a computer and by hand.The study,published in 2015,found that when writing with a pen and paper,participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study,Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write."Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active,which helps us access our vocabulary,word meaning and concepts.It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas."Berninger said.
Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (轉(zhuǎn)換)"those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,"the study said.Seeing the words in the"mind's eye"helps children not only to turn their ideas into words,says Berninger,but also to spot (發(fā)現(xiàn)) spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time.
"In our computer age,some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,"she said."But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level,they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer."

28.What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?B
A.The absence of blackboards in classrooms.
B.The use of new technologies in our daily life.
C.The lack of practice in handwriting.
D.The popular use of smartphones.
29.Berninger's study published in 2015A.
A.focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer
B.indicated that students prefer to write with a pen and paper
C.found that good essays are made up of long sentences
D.discussed the importance of writing speed
30.Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?B
A.Spelling improves one's memory of words.
B.Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability.
C.Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas.
D.Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas.
31.What conclusion could be drawn from the passage?C
A.Computers can help people with their choice of words.
B.Spelling checks can take the place of spelling teaching.

3.Daydreaming was viewed as a waste of time.Or it was considered an unhealthy escape from real life and its duties.Daydreaming has always had a bad reputation,but now scientific research has showed that daydreaming may actually improve your mental health and creativity.It can even help you achieve your desired goals.
Now some people are taking a fresh look at daydreaming.Some think it may be a very healthy thing to do.Researchers are finding daydreaming,they tell us,is a good means of relaxation.But its benefits go beyond this.A number of psychologists have conducted experiments and have reached some surprising conclusions.
Dr.Joan T.Freyberg has concluded that daydreaming contributes to intellectual growth.It also improves concentration,attention span,and the ability to get along with others,she says.In an experiment with school children?the same researcher found that daydreaming led the children to pay more attention to details.They had more happy feelings.They worked together better.Another researcher reported that daydreaming seemed to produce improved self-control and creative abilities.
But that's only part of  the story.The most remarkable thing about daydreaming may be its usefulness in shaping our future lives as we want them to be.Industrialist Henry J.Kaiser believed that much of his success was due to the positive use of daydreaming.He maintained that"you can imagine your future."Florence Nightingale dreamed of becoming a nurse.The young Thomas Edison pictured himself as an inventor.For these famous achievers,it appears that their daydreams came true.
Of course daydreaming is no substitute(代替者)for hard work.You have to work hard to develop skills.Daydreaming alone can't turn you into your heart's desire.But in,combination with the more usual methods of self-development,it might make a critical difference.And who knows:You might see your own daydreams come true.

6.Picture a library without books?Well,I can't.Ever since I was little l would go to the library and take out numerous books. From picture books to beginning chapter books to YA books,books have always been a part of my life. Unlike many people today,I don't own a Kindle or a Nook or any type of e-reader. I prefer the old-fashioned book. There is something about holding a book and being able to turn the pages that I find comforting. In today's 21st century,books may become obsolete. For me that's something I find scary.
I am a fan of the old TV science-fiction series Twilight Zone. One episode(一段情節(jié))is about a librarian who has become obsolete.Though this episode aired in 1961,the writer of the series,Rod Serling was exactly on point when it came to predicting the future.
In fact,in San Antonio,Texas the first-ever bookless library in the country opened.The library is full of iMacs,tablets and iPads which cost a huge $2.3million.The library offers around 10.000e-books. So the question is,is this what the future will soon be?Mary Graham,vice president of South Carolina's Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce states,"This is the future…If you're going to be building new library facilities,this is what you need to be doing."
It is our generation that will be the guinea pigs (試驗品) of increasing technology like this. Is this a good or bad thing?Well,digital libraries may help the environment by not using paper; however,I feel like something will always be lacking with a digital book.A digital library is just the beginning.
With all of this new technology,people seem to be more absorbed in their own world.One of my biggest complaints is when I am with my friends and they can't seem to get off their smart phone and talk to me. To make plans with a friend and then have them stuck on their phone the whole time is extremely rude.Not only is it disrespectful,but it reflects the direction of where human interactions are heading.Though social media is great,it also is addicting and has negative effects.
Often when I go on Facebook it just makes me feel worse about myself. I'll see many of my 800Facebook friends showing off their newest accomplishment or acceptance to college.Additionally,our society is becoming increasingly lazy. For instance,instead of doing mental math,people use their phone to solve 89+74. It is simple tasks like these that are allowing people to lack important educational and social skills.
It is up to us to find a balance between technology and human values and interactions. With new technology being created every day,we need to learn how to use it alongside our great minds.After all,inventions are supposed to benefit society not harm it. In the day of technology,who knows what's next?
