Most of us spend our lives seeking the natural world. We go fishing, sit in the garden, have a picnic, live in the suburbs or go to the seaside. The most popular leisure activity in Britain is going for a walk. When joggers jog, they don’t run the streets. Every one of them tend to go to the park or the river.

But despite this, our children are growing up nature deprived(剝奪). I spent my boyhood climbing trees. These days, children are robbed of these ancient freedoms, due to problems like crime, traffic, the loss of the open spaces and strange new ideas about what is best for children, that is to say, things that can be bought, rather than things that can be found.

The truth is to be found elsewhere. A study in the US: families had moved to better housing and the children were assessed for ADHD—attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (多動癥). Those whose accommodation had more natural views showed an improvement of 19%; those who had the same improvement in material surroundings but no nice view improved just 4%.

ADHD is one of the great problems of modern childhood. One study after another indicates that contact with nature gives huge benefits to ADHD children. However, we spend money on drugs rather than on green places.

The life of old people is measurably better when they have access to nature. The increasing concern for the growing population of old people is in quality rather than quantity of years. And study after study finds that a garden is the single most important thing in finding that quality. Even problems with crime and aggressive behaviour are reduced when there is contact with the natural world.

We need the wild world. It is essential to our well-being, our health and our happiness.

1.According to the author, people enjoy _______ to seek nature.

A. jogging on the street

B. sitting in the garden

C. shopping in the supermarket

D. running in the gym

2. From the second paragraph, we can see that _______.

A. adults deprive the children of their rights to approach nature

B. climbing trees will certainly do good to the children

C. children probably spend less time in nature nowadays

D. children tend to be happier as a result of their material satisfaction

3. In what way do people benefit from their contact with nature?

A. Children with ADHD can be cured.

B. A garden nearby improves the quality of old people’s life.

C. Problems with crime and violent behavior will easily be solved.

D. Children’s performance at school is greatly improved.

4.What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Access to nature improves our life.

B. Nature treats children with ADHD.

C. Getting close to nature reduces crime.

D. Man can’t live without natural areas.

Pulling heavy suitcases all day in the summer is hard work, especially when you are a thin 14-year-old boy. That was me in 1940-the youngest and smallest baggage boy at New York City's Pennsylvania Railway Station.

After just a few days on the job, I began noticing that the other fellows were overcharging passengers. I'd like to join them, thinking, "Everyone else is doing it."

When I got home that night, I told my dad what I wanted to do. "You give an honest day's work," he said, looking at me straight in his eye. "They are paying you. If they want to do that, you let them do that."

I followed my dad's advice for the rest of that summer and have lived by his words ever since.

Of all the jobs I've had, it was my experience at Pennsylvania Railway Station that has stuck with me. Now I teach my players to have respect for other people and their possession. Being a member of a team is a totally shared experience. If one person steals, it destroys trust and hurts everyone. I can put up with many things, but not with people who steal. If one of my players were caught stealing, he'd be gone.

Whether you're on a sports team, in an office or a member of a family. if you can't trust one another, there is going to be trouble.

1.What can be inferred about the baggage boys?

A. They could earn much, but they had to work hard.

B. Many of them earned money in a dishonest way.

C. They were all from poor families.

D. They were thin, young boys.

2.What does the father's advice imply?

A. It is wrong to give more to the passengers.

B. Don't believe them if they are paying you more.

C. Don't follow others to overcharge the passengers.

D. It is difficult to work hard and live as an honest boy.

3.The underlined word "it" (in Paragraph 2) refers to______

A. overcharging passengers B. pulling heavy suitcases all day

C. paying passengers money D. working in an honest way

4.The writer can't put up with stealing because he thinks that _______.

A. it is a total shared experience

B. it is considered as the most dangerous

C. it does great harm to human relationship

D. it may led to the loss of his sports team.

5.It can be concluded from the text that _______.

A. his father's advice helped him to decide which job to take up

B. working in the sports team was his most important experience

C. he learned much from his shared experience with his team members

D. his experience as a baggage boy had a great influence on his late life

The term, culture shock, describes the anxiety produced when a person moves to a completely new environment. This term expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. The feeling of culture shock generally sets in after the first few weeks of coming to a new place.

We can describe culture shock as the physical and emotional discomfort one suffers when coming to live in another country or place. Often, the way that we lived before is not accepted as or considered as normal in the new place. Everything is different, for example, not speaking the language, not knowing how to use banking machines and so forth.

Although one can experience real pain from culture shock, it is also an opportunity for resetting one' s life objectives. It is a great opportunity for learning and acquiring new viewpoints. Culture shock can make one develop a better understanding of oneself.

Culture shock has many stages. The first stage is called the "honeymoon" stage. The new arrival may feel excited as everything is new.

In the second stage, a person may encounter some difficult times in daily life. For example, communication difficulties may occur such as not being understood. There may be feelings of discontent, anger, sadness, and feeling incompetence. This happens when a person is trying to adapt to a new culture. Transition (過渡) between the old methods and those of the new country is a difficult process and takes time to complete.

The third stage is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. One may start to feel a certain psychological balance. The new arrival may start to have a feeling of direction and want to belong.

In the fourth stage, the person realizes that the new culture has good and bad things to offer. The person has a more solid feeling of belonging and starts to set goals for living.

The fifth stage is called the " re-entry shock". This occurs when a return to the

country of origin is made. One may find that things are no longer the same. For example, some of the newly acquired customs are not in use in the old culture.

Many factors (因素) contribute to the length and effects of culture shock. For example, the individual's state of mental health, type of personality, previous experiences, familiarity with the language, and level of education. So the five stages are present at different times and each person has their own way of reacting. 64. What do we learn about culture shock?

1.What do we learn about culture shock?

A. It has negative effect on people.

B. Its effect can differ from person to person.

C. It disappears when people return to their homelands.

D. It can be avoided if one can understand the language.

2.Which stage of culture shock is Tommy in?

Tommy moved to France with his parents two months ago.

But now he still can not get used to the life there.

He also has problems in schooling.

Even worse, he doesn't think anybody cares about him.

A. Stage 2. B. Stage 3. C. Stage 4. D. Stage 5.

3. The main purpose of the passage is to________

A. discuss and clarify B. argue and advise

C. introduce and explain D. compare and evaluate
