When people hear the word 'rat', they may think of dirty animals that spread disease. And if you are an English learner, you may also connect the word 'rat' with bad 【1】 (express). For example, calling someone a 'rat' is 【2】 big insult and 'rat race' describes a joyless, hurried way of living. So rats 【3】 (general) are not beloved animals either in life or the English language. But the rat trainers at the nonprofit organization, APOPO, see the animals very differently.
Based on Tanzania, APOPO trains giant rats 【4】 (find) landmines. Humans 【5】 (use) metal-searching devices to do this work for years. But rats--- it turns out--- do it better. And they also cost 【6】 (little) money. APOPO estimates that worldwide there are 110 million 【7】 (hide) explosives (爆炸物) left over from wars. These explosives are still 'live', or able to explode. The work that APOPO does is really important in spreading the fact 【8】 rats are not just a pest. They really are 【9】 (hero) and they show us every day that they are worthy 【10】 that name.
【1】expressions
【2】a
【3】generally
【4】to find
【5】have used / have been using
【6】less
【7】hidden
【8】that
【9】heroes
【10】of
此處考查短語train sb. to do sth.“訓練某人做某事”,其中不定式是賓補,故填to find。
此處是句子謂語動詞,根據(jù)for years判斷為現(xiàn)在完成時,也可理解為現(xiàn)在完成進行時,主語humans是復數(shù),故填have used/ have been using。
分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,此處是同位語從句連接詞,從句rats are not just a pest.
此處考查短語be worthy of“值……”,故填of。
分析從句成分:從句成分完整rats are not just a pest
故填that

Something strange was happening inside LeeAnne’s home. During the summer of 2014,14-year-old J.D. had stomach severe pains, but his CT scan found nothing wrong. LeeAnne and her husband lost hair and suffered dizziness and headaches. LeeAnne even lost her eyelashes.
In January 2015, the city of Flint sent out a notice that the water supply, switched from the Detroit water system to the Flint River to cut cost, contained high levels of trihalomethanes The notice warned that people with poor immune (免疫的) systems might be at increased risk for liver, kidney, and nervous system problems but emphasized that the water was otherwise safe to drink.
Alarmed, LeeAnne researched the water supply and searched the Internet. Then she distributed a fact sheet to city officials, listing the side effects of exposure to trihalomethanes. Then she urged her neighbors to attend city council meetings, where they shared their health problems. Still, officials insisted the water was safe to drink. So LeeAnne demanded that the city test her water.
The results were disturbing. The trihalomethanes were the least of her problems. The lead levels in her water were nearly seven times the legal amount. But the city maintained her plumbing (管道) was the cause.
LeeAnne immediately had her children tested for lead. All the kids showed lead exposure. She read Flint’s water quality reports and discovered the city wasn’t applying the proper corrosion (腐蝕) control standards to its pipes; the standards prevent the metal in pipes from leaching into the water.
In March, a follow-up test of LeeAnne’s water showed lead levels nearly 27 times higher than the EPA’s threshold. LeeAnne’s pipes could not be responsible for the high lead levels, since they were plastic.
In September, Virginia Tech lab released a report that concluded the Flint River water was 19 times more corrosive than the Detroit water.
The governor eventually admitted the water was unsafe. He ordered that Flint’s water supply be switched back to Detroit’s. In Washington, President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in Flint and ordered federal aid to help the city recover.

Last semester in my final year of high school, I had a kind teacher whom I can never forget. I was not the best student when it came to writing tests. I had to work extra hard to get good marks, although I enjoyed learning. Anyway, this class that I truly enjoyed still had me struggling to do well on my tests. My teacher willingly helped me and was always willing to answer my questions, and I greatly appreciated it. He was a remarkable teacher, always reaching out to students and helping them achieve their greatest potential.
I remember the day of writing my final exam, I was the last one still writing in the exam room as always, reviewing my exam paper, while everyone else had already finished and left the room. After turning in my exam-paper, I started to leave the classroom, but decided to turn around and say what I had meant to say.
What I did right then was that I sincerely thanked my teacher for everything. What I said to him lastly meant a lot more to him than I thought it would —“I really enjoyed this class.” I did not think much about it. I was just being honest with him, but the look on his face was remarkable. He seemed really touched and appreciated my simple comment, just knowing that one of his students had truly enjoyed his class. That is what I call a simple, yet very meaningful act of kindness to brighten a teacher’s day, because they work so hard for us and truly inspire us to learn.
It is what we say and do to show concern to others that can make somebody else’s day extra special. I believe that a simple praise can mean a lot more than one can think.
