Humans have been keeping animals as pets for tens of thousands of years, but Dr. Jean-Loup Rault, an animal scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, believes new companions are coming: robot pets.

“Technology is moving very fast,” Rault told ABC News, “The Tamagotchi in the early 1990s was really the first robotic pet, and now Sony and other big companies have improved them a lot.”

This may not sit well with pet lovers. After all, who would choose a plastic toy over a lovely puppy? But Rault argues that the robotic kind has a lot going for it: “You don’t have to feed it, you don’t have to walk it, it won’t make a mess in your house, and you can go on a holiday without feeling guilty.” The technology also benefits those who are allergic to pets, short on space, or fearful of real animals.

It’s not clear whether robot pets can replace real ones. But studies do suggest that we can bond with these smart machines. People give their cars names and kids give their toy animals life stories. It’s the same with robots. When Sony stopped its repair service for its robot dog Aibo in March 2014, owners in Japan held funerals.

As an animal welfare researcher, Rault is concerned about how robotic pets could affect our attitudes towards live animals. “If we become used to a robotic companion that doesn’t need food, water or exercises, perhaps it will change how humans care about other living beings,” he said.

So are dogs and cats a thing of the past, as Rault predicts? For those who grew up with living and breathing pets, the mechanical kind might not do. But for our next generation who are in constant touch with smart technology, a future in which lovely pets needn’t have a heartbeat might not be a far-fetched dream.

b. Owners needn’t worry about them when going out.

c. They can help cure allergies.

3.We can learn from the passage that___________.

A. Sony is the first company to produce robot pets Aibo.

B. People can develop strong bond with their robot pets.

C. Rault thinks robot pets still have a long way to go.

D. Robot toys may help people care more about living beings.

“I honestly have no idea how that cat got up there. It’s a hundred—foot—metal pole. There’s no way he climbed that thing,”Jim said to the worried woman. It wasn’t even her cat,but she was passing by and saw it.immediately calling the fire—station to come to save it.Jim saw a lot of strange things as a fireman, often sad or upsetting things, but this was new.

“I suppose we could get the blanket and see if we can convince the poor cat to jump down· But he doesn’t really look too scared…”Jim said to the woman.

When people ask me what Down Syndrome(唐氏綜合癥) is, I tell them it’s an extra chromosome(染色體). A doctor would tell you the extra chromosome causes an intellectual disability that makes it harder for me to learn things.

Even though I have Down Syndrome, my life is a lot like yours. I read books and watch TV. I listen to music with my friends. I’m on the swim team and in chorus at school. I think about the future, and I like the one who I’ll marry. And I get along with my sisters---except when they take CDs without asking! I’m a hard worker, a good person, and I care about my friends.

Some of my classes are with typical kids, and some are with kids with learning disabilities. I have an aid who goes with me to my harder classes, like math and biology. She helps me take notes and gives me tips on how I should study for tests. It really helps, but I also challenge myself to do well. For instance, my goal was to be in a typical English class by 12th grade. That’s exactly what happened this year!

It’s true that I don’t learn some things as fast as other people do. But that won’t stop me from trying. I just know that if I work really hard and by myself I can do almost anything.

I can’t change the fact that I have Down Syndrome, but one thing I would change is what people think of me. I’d tell them, “Judge me as a whole person, not just the person you see. Treat me with respect, and accept me for who I am. The most important---just be my friend.”

1.A person with Down Syndrome ____________according to the passage.

A. can learn things almost as fast as normal people do

B. has one more chromosome than normal people

C. is hard to get along with

D. is easy to get along with

2.The writer tries to picture himself as a __________teenager.

A. normal B. perfect C. lovely D. special

3.The writer feels ________about his life.

A. confused B. hopeful C. unhappy D. curious

4.What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To prove people with Down Syndrome are a lot like healthy ones

B. To show the writer’s honesty and optimism

C. To change people’s attitude towards people with Down Syndrome

D. To describe the life of a student with learning disabilities

Parents usually go to malls to find new school supplies for their children. One of the most important things to get during this time is the backpack. 1. During these past few days I have been reflecting a lot on everything that happened this past year and thinking of what I can do differently so that the coming year will be much better! Here I want to share some tips so you can also do your resolution and you can achieve them all!

·Be realistic: You should always try to reach for the skies with your goals, but things like “I want to win the lottery(彩票)” or “I want to lose 80 pounds in 1 month” are things you shouldn’t have on your list because they will only become frustrations.

·Be detailed: It’s a lot easier to accomplish more specific plans than general ones. Instead of writing “I want to lose weight,” put things like “I will start my Yes You Can! Diet Plan the first Monday of the year” or “I will start a movement routine 3 times a week for 35 minutes.” When we put down concrete activities, we commit ourselves to them and it becomes a lot harder to come up with excuses.

·Think of alternatives: At the beginning of this past year, you put that you were going to start going to the gym as one of your annual plans. During the whole year you intended to take action but you always said that you couldn’t because you came home so tired from work. If this is one of your plans for this year, you should write down how you’re going to achieve it. For example, “I will start going to the gym in the mornings, before work.” That way you prevent what stopped you from achieving your goal last year.

·Focus on goals which depend on YOU: It is very important that all of your plans are for YOU to accomplish, and it is important that you write them down that way. If one of your goals this coming year is to improve a relationship with one of your family members, make sure that you clearly put down what you are going to do for this to succeed. For example, “I will call my sister at least three times a week and I will visit her in the middle of the year.”

Well, I hope that you use these tips so that this year you will accomplish everything you want, and make it the best year ever! Thank you for being with me during everything this past year, and I hope that you keep showing me all of this love and support during the next. Happy new year!

1. Why isn’t “I want to win the lottery” recommended as a New Year plan?

A. Because it is very likely to fail.

B. Because it is too easy to realize.

C. Because it is not big enough as a goal.

D. Because it is not easier than losing weight.

2. The underlined word commit in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by the word_______.

A. devote B. determine C. adjust D. force

3.When you failed to accomplish your plan last year, you’re advised to ______.

A. take action instead of writing it down

B. give up the same plan this year

C. put down the way to realize it

D. stop making any plans

4.According to the passage, which of the following is the best plan?

A. I will become a millionaire in one month.

B. I want to be the champion of the marathon.

C. I will change all of my bad habits in one week.

D. I will go for a walk after supper in working days.
