I’m very much honored to give you a speech on healthy breakfast._____________________

I’m very honored to give you a speech on healthy breakfast. Some students in our class often go to school without breakfast while others do have breakfast but not a well-balanced one. Consequently, their health and study efficiency are negatively affected. A healthy and well-balanced breakfast should consist of whole grains, eggs and milk, fruits and vegetables. The grain which contains carbohydrates can provide the energy we need every day. Eggs and milk supply protein and fruits and vegetables are good for healthy digestion. Therefore, I strongly suggest that we should get up early and have a well-balanced breakfast before going to school.

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise. In the end ,I said, “ Son, remember: Be slow and steady, and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”

Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”

I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”

“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”

“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (堅(jiān)忍不拔的), by pushing on steadily.”

Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.

Getting along with parents

Mom and dad are the most important people in your life, and they’re likely to influence you more than anyone else in your lifetime. It’s a parent’s job to love and guide kids, and most parents will do this as long as they live. 1. Here are four ways you can stay close, get along, and build a strong relationship.

Spend time together. It might be easy to be physically in the same place with your mom and dad.2. Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV by yourself, maybe you should ask your mom and dad to play with you. You can go outside together, try a board game, or read a book together.

3. Many kids say they would like their parents to help them when they’re upset. But your mom and dad might not know that you’re having a problem. Tell your parents if you’re sad or struggling with something. If you don’t usually do this, give it a try and you will be glad.

Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom and dad. 4. It’s also lovely when a kid offers to help fold the laundry or cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents might be so excited!

Show your care. Some families are always kissing, hugging, and saying “I love you”. 5. In addition to kisses and hugs, kids and parents can show their love by respecting each other, being caring, polite, and thoughtful.

A. But how much time do you spend just enjoying each other’s company(陪伴)?

B. It’s important to show that you care for each other.

C. But parents do a lot more than just pass down their hobbies.

D. Share your feelings and ask for help.

E. Talk on the phone and email each other to stay in touch.

F. You can brighten your parents’ day with a hug, a card or a joke.

G. That means you have many years to share with your mom and dad.

“Long time no see” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s email,I laughed.I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.

Obviously,it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greetings with a ruled English grammar and structure! Later on,my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting.I was too thrilled to believe her.Her words could not convince me at all.So I did a research on Google.com.To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books,or any other possible places.Though it is sort of informal,it is part of the language that Americans use daily.Ironically,if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.

Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s,Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a world wide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens.Detective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius(孔子).“Long time no see” was his trademark.Soon after Charlie Chan,“Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies.

Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of “stew”.All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other.American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少數(shù)民族的成員) group in the United States,is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stew.

You can have some other examples than adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will modify it and make it their own,so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant,or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store.Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays,I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor.

1.The writer himself felt surprised at ______.

A.the Chinglish expression “Long time no see”

B.“Long time no see” used as standard American English

C.so many literal translation of the expressions used in America

D.finding out Americans use the expression every day

2.The word “stew” in the 4th paragraph probably means ______.

A.mixture literature

B.Confucius’ words

C.a(chǎn) kind of cooked dish

D.American changing cultures

3.According to the passage,it can be inferred that ______.

A.detectives translate the phrase “Long time no see”

B.Hollywood made “Long time no see” popular

C.the huge pot of stew greatly affects all kinds of languages

D.cultures can be changed in the huge pot of stew

4.The main idea of the passage is that ______.

A.some Chinese expressions are introduced into English

B.you’ll not be surprised at a tofu in a restaurant in America

C.some American expressions can be used in China

D.American English keep being enriched from different cultures

Relation between the United States and Columbia suffered for many years because of an incident involving the Republic of Panama. By the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, many Americans felt that an easier and faster way was needed to get ships from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Some people in the United States first believed that a canal across Nicaragua was the answer. However, President Theodore Roosevelt decided that a canal through Panama would be a better choice.

In order to build the canal , the United States had to negotiate (談判) a treaty with Columbia , which at that time controlled Panama . Roosevelt offered Columbia $ 10 million plus $ 250,000 a year for 99 years for a six-mile-wide strip of land across Panama. Columbia rejected the United States’ offer. This ranged President Roosevelt, and negotiations with Columbia ended.

In 1903, a revolution broke out in Panama. The United States ships were sent by President Roosevelt to protect the Panamanian revolutionaries from Columbian forces. The revolution succeeded, and Panama declared its independence from Columbia. The United States then negotiated with the newly formed government. A treaty was signed, and the United States began building the canal.

As a result of the incident, Columbia and the United States remained on bad terms for many years. Not until 1921, when the United States agreed to pay Columbia some compensation (賠償) for its territory, did relations between the two countries improve.

1.According to the passage, the United States and Columbia were on bad terms because the United States had ________.

A. at first wished to build a canal through Nicaragua

B. promised to pay Columbia $ 10 million for Panama

C. wished to build a canal through Panama

D. supported Panamanian revolutionaries in their fight for independence from Columbia.

2. From the information in the passage, it can be concluded that the United States ______.

A. wanted to build a canal because it was considered starting a war

B. felt that building a canal through Panama was worth the risk of ruining relations with Columbia

C. believed that a canal through Nicaragua would be profitable

D. had lost the Spanish-American War

3.It can be inferred from the passage that an important reason for the decision of the United States to build a canal was to _______.

A. develop trade relations with Europe

B. improve relations with South American countries

C. prevent European ships from reaching the Pacific Ocean

D. reduce travel time for its ships in case of war

4.The passage mainly gives us________.

A. advice B. information

C. humor D. News
