Injuries and deaths caused by driving after drinking are preventable. Sadly, actions by the police can only catch a small number of drunk drivers on the roads. It is up to each person to make the decisions. 【1】 So we should help guide our friends and persuade them to avoid driving after drinking. Here are some tips.

Start talking to the person early. With every drink, judgment becomes increasingly uncontrolled. 2 So as soon as your friend starts drinking, you should try to persuade him to make a plan to get home safely. Remember, after he gets drunk, he may not listen to you.

Help the person realize he is drunk. Talk to him and show him that he is increasingly clumsy. 3 For example, ask who you can call to pick him up, or what public transport he would like to use. If he knows he is drunk, he may follow your advice.

Make last efforts. If all else fails and a drunk person wants to drive home, threaten to call the police or take his keys. 4 When he is not concentrated, take his keys. This may make it easier to convince him to take a cab home. Remember, don’t give him the keys even if he’s angry.

5 If you once drove home after you got drunk, your friend may not listen to you. So in order to succeed in persuading your friend to avoid driving after drinking, you should behave yourself first.

A. Ask him where his keys are.

B. Set a good role model.

C. Give him an alternative way to get home.

D. But it isn’t easy to make the right decisions.

E. Make him realize drinking makes him look like a fool.

F. The police will come to help you out once you call them.

G. It means the more one drinks, the less likely that he will listen to you.

The British people love talking about the weather. This hot summer, Europe was caught in the heat wave, and many parts of China were also been struggling with record-breaking temperatures. Therefore, there’s plenty for the British people to
get excited about.
But beside from a simple“hot”, what other ways are there to describe the summer heat? Apart from phrases like“boiling hot”, there are many interesting expressions that relate to unbearably hot weather.
Dog days of summer
In books and newspaper articles, the period from early July to mid-August is often referred to as the“dog days of summer”. Some think the expression means the weather is so hot that dogs go wild. But in fact, the expression comes from 16 th century and refers to the days on which Sirius(天狼星)—the Dog Star—rises at the same time as the sun. The Romans associated the hot weather with this star and would sacrifice a dog every year in April to stop the anger of Sirius.
So hot you can fry an egg on the sidewalk
This expression needs no explanation and although its origin is unclear, it hasn’t stopped thousands of curious tourists from testing if the saying is true, with the result that sidewalks in Death Valley, California—the hottest place in the US—are now littered with broken eggshells. Early in July, the local government asked tourists to stop their cooking experiments. Even so, it is actually possible to fry an egg on the sidewalk, so long as you use a frying pan with a lid and the temperature is at least 49℃.
(1)What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Some expressions about hot weather.
B.The heat wave in the world.
C.Sirius is associated with the hot weather.
D.Death Valley—the hottest place in the US.
(2)According to the passage, how long does“dog days of summer”last?
A.About one month.
B.About two months.
C.About two months and a half.
D.About one month and a half.
(3)What caused broken eggshells littered around sidewalks in Death Valley?
A.The hot weather.
B.The curiosity of tourists.
C.The permission of the local government.
D.The origin of the expression.
(4)Which of the following is NOT necessary to test the last expression about hot weather?
A.On the sidewalk.
B.A frying pan with a lid.
C.The temperature(≥49℃).
D.In the hottest place.

【題目】Have you ever felt like you are not given the kind of respect you deserve? In one way or another, all of us have felt this way. We’ve yearned(渴望) to be looked at as an authority, someone people look up to and trust. We’re not taught in school how to do this and our parents didn’t tell us the secret on how to establish our authority. It’s something we learn and gain by ourselves. And the answer is as simple as changing our mindset. What? No way! Oh but it is. People tend to underestimate the power of the mind. Change your game by changing your mind.

Take time to look back and think about people in your life who are an authority or a leader at work, who has more credibility(可信度) than you or who you look up to and inspires you. They are up there not for the reasons you think. If you really think about it, they aren't the smartest of the bunch, not the most educated, and neither are they the best. And in no way do they even call themselves an expert. Instead, they are up there because they are great teachers and advocates(支持者) for the success of their customers or employees.

Let’s take Richard Simmons for example. This famous fitness personality has been a household name ever since he started gaining popularity during the first few years of his career. Stop and think, though, do you really think he is the best person to really get people into shape? Is he the Einstein of fitness and nutrition? Or does he even call himself a master of his craft? Of course not. People look up to him and give him authority because he is a great educator. Instead of sharing information that’s far too complicated to understand, he figures out what your problems are and finds out a way to fix them. He even has social media that he updates on a regular basis with topics that are helpful and easy to understand for his fans and followers.

Depending on the field you’re in, you can share with people things you know and that you think they will want to know as well. If you’re a nurse, for example, you can make a blog post for common health problems and quick remedies(治療方法) people can do at home. Remember, the simpler you can make it, the better. People will trust you completely if you give them easy solutions. Like Richard, you’ll soon be the expert you’ll want to listen to. You can be an advocate also by showing people that you have their best interests at heart. You can also start up conferences to take up people’s concerns and try to deal with them the best way that you can.

So, how will you be viewed as an authority? Make that mind shift. Find out what concerns and troubles your target. Give solutions. Show that you care. And help them climb up that ladder of success. Ladies and gentlemen, that’s how it’s done.

1What can we know about Richard Simmons?

A. He is as intelligent as Einstein.

B. He believed himself to be a master of fitness.

C. He became popular in the first few years of his career.

D. He shares complex information with his fans and followers.

2The example of a nurse in Paragraph 4 is used to tell us ________.

A. the importance of trust

B. the pleasure of being a nurse

C. the ways of becoming an authority

D. the benefits of learning first aid

3Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?

A. People always think highly of the power of the mind.

B. You can gain the knowledge of becoming an authority at school.

C. People considered as authorities are those with higher education.

D. Providing easy solutions for people can help increase your credibility.

4Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?(P=paragraph)

A. B.

C. D.

【題目】A great loss—Shirley Temple dies at 85

February 12, 2014

BY DERRIK J. LANG, Associated Press

Shirley Temple Black, who died on February 10that age 85, wasn’t just a child star. She was THE child star—the sweet little girl whose shining smile helpedilluminesome of the darkest days the US has known during the Great Depression.

It’s hard today to imagine the super star Shirley was once “America’s Little Darling”. She sang and danced her way to the top of the box office in such films as Bright Eyes, Curly Top and Heidi. By 1940, she had appeared in 43 films. Temple teamed with Bill Robison in four movies, and their dance on the stairs in The Little Colonel is still a legendary film moment.

In the 1930s, her name on a movie introduction assured (保證) a packed house. She inspired dolls, dresses, dishes—even a drink (alcohol-free, of course).

US President Franklin D. Roosevelt once famously said that “as long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right.’’

Unlike so many of today’s child stars, Temple didn’t end up with her name appearing across the headlines for bad behaviors. Instead of getting her photos on front pages or struggling with drugs and alcohol, Temple went on to a second career in diplomacy (外交), including presidential appointments as ambassador to Ghana.

She surprised a lot of people who doubted her with her grace, knowledge and eagerness to serve. In fact, her career in public service (20 years) was longer than her career in movies (19). The role she valued most, however, was as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

The world has lost a treasured Hollywood legend. But her movies will allow that little dynamic figure to continue charming audiences for a very long time.

1The word “illumine” in Paragraph 1 means _______.

A. shorten B. sweeten

C. strengthen D. brighten

2Temple, as a child movie star, can best be described as _______.

A. sweet and lively B. gentle and kind

C. smart and knowledgeable D. shy and attractive

3What part did she regard as the most important in her life?

A. A top movie star. B. A businesswoman.

C. Her family role. D. Her diplomacy career.

4Where does this passage possibly come from?

A. A biography. B. A newspaper.

C. A magazine. D. A poster.
